Munich is a happnen’ place! Garmisch-Partenkirchen isn’t terribly far away, if you want really old villages in the mountains, or there are hiking trails closer to the city. Dachau and the Englisch Garden are just as visit-worthy, for different reasons, as ever. But Munich is also home to lots of tech companies and is now very international, so you might want to look up new restaurants and things to do. Public transit there is good; I’ve taken it to all the places I just mentioned. My son and I were impressed by how clean, quiet, and new the subway and regional train cars were when we were there at the end of the year. Enjoy your trip!

Be sure to go to Dacha, a nearby WWII prison site. There are free trips available to a casino in the mountains. You can walk the town rather than go to the casino. If you have a chance , go up the river to small towns of Gutenberg ( first printing press) and Rudishim ( sp.?). Great river wine town.
Try the beer gardens. So much fun. See the town clock in the main square.
Oberamagau...look at the wood carvings are carver demos. Amazing. I have started a collection of Good Shepherd carvings, but whatever takes your fancy. Not foo far away is a monastery that brews great beer and serves meals. Check Rick Steves for ideas. You will feel like you have gone back 1000 years in time.

We loved Munich! We took a private walking tour through Tours By Locals from this guy, who is an American expat living in Germany:

https://www.toursbylocals.com/BavariaTourGuide Can't recommend him or Tours By Locals in general highly enough. He has an excursion to Neushwannstein, too.

We stayed at the Palace Hotel, which we loved. Also there is an amazing high-end grocery store almost across the street, with a wonderful restaurant upstairs:

The English Garden is their version of Central Park and is great for strolling and picnicking. Don't miss the artificial surfing wave!

Have a wonderful time!

In late May M. Abeille and I have tickets for the passion play in Oberammergau. We are planning a day trip to the castle of Neuschwannstein. The rest of our 10 day trip we will be sticking close to Munich, probably returning the rental car and using public transport to get around.

Any advice, recommendations or must-dos?
