Meredith, Wonderful thoughtful look at Georgia O"Keefe and her wardrobe...I will definitely put Dr. Crum's proposed book on my radar to look for in the future...
I am working at refining my style to work wherever I am...so if I am in Paris or in Marfa, Texas...I would wear the same..I would not change my style or have to worry about what I wore and how it was perceived..This coincides with my philosophy of dressing for me and not seeking approval of what I wear...Again, coming from someone who has always sought approval of others and wanted to blend into the crowd with my style...I am on an interesting personal trip to understand all of this...Thank you for the thoughtful post...I will add it to the pile to ponder that I already have...

Had to come back, because this question brings back memories of my so-called youth (I've always suffered from accelerated decrepitude, hehe). My father was from the West Indies, and in the olden days, the family dressed for dinner. Anyways, not the climate or culture for jeans pegged with safety pins. I took matching luggage packed with nothing but Nordstrom / Ralph Lauren fare. I.e., vinyl mod ankle boots from the street vendor had to stay home. Lol.

Things I remember in particular: *blue blazer,* fuschia linen skirt (with matched silk blouse), plaid ball-gown skirt, a very cute black and white toile full-skirted sundress (cotton, but because of the climate I could wear it for evening events), and a blue Laura Ashley dress (another full skirted number) with a matching blue hat - total picnic stuff, if your idea of a picnic involves packing the dining table.

What about this wardrobe was me, I don't know. But I did pick everything.

Oh, this sounds very interesting, and your question is quite difficult. The closest I get is to compare how I would dress if I could live a few months in Southern France even year, which is a dream of mine. I think my style would be in line what what I already wear, but I would rarely wear heels, and my most smart casual outfits would be left at home. I might try a nod to a more bohemian style with looser blouses, straw hats and chic sandals.

The lecture sounds so interesting, and I wish I could have heard it.

Yet another reason to admire Georgia O'Keefe. Not only did she paint spectacular pictures of giant vagina flowers -- she also had great style! (Incidentally, I had actually planned to write this term's art history paper on O'Keefe, but couldn't find the book reference I needed, so chose a different artist instead).

I created a Pinterest board here but most picture I found are in black and white which make it difficult to tell the color, only dark or light. There is one of her in a plaid skirt which must have been more colorful. Her style reminds me of my grandmothers, a Nebraska farm woman. Here is an interesting post on her.

This sounds like a fascinating lecture. I would love to know more about O'Keefe's thought process as she developed and then refined her style for each environment.

You ask a very tough question! I live in a four season (but mainly cold) and fairly casual environment. i suppose the opposite would be a hot & humid yet very dressy city? Maybe Hong Kong? I don't know....

Like Gaylene, I dress differently in my small home city than I dress when I travel to Europe or even to larger North American centres, but the differences are rather slight in my case -- just more "smart casual" than "plain ordinary casual." (Then again, I already live in a city, albeit a smaller and more casual one.)

I have had a somewhat similar experience to O'Keefe's during my occasional artist residencies. I've held these in different places, but in particular I often go to the rocky mountains. There's a huge consistency in my style there to at home. Still a lot of denim, fluid pullovers, blue and white -- but I include more gear (a backpack, a rainproof coat, hiking boots), and there's less "luxe" in the travel wardrobe for sure.

I think about this question from time to time. Because my style doesn't transcend place at all. I have this thing about my clothing style being simpatico with the architecture of the building I'm in.

Actually, I have this thing with furniture too. I positively love the Roche Bobois module sofa, but I'd never ever live in an abode where this would be visually fitting. So I have a traditional chintz covered Baker sofa.

Also there's a little bit (ok, a lotta bit) of culture - music, politics, philosophy, manners - that goes into my style. When all that's different, my style is different.

And when my position in a community is different, my style is different too.

Fascinating! I'm not familiar with Dr. corn's work but I will watch for that book. Georgia o'keefe has been one of my beloved style icons too. I've always been interested in early to mid century women who flouted mainstream fashion to create personal style expressions: Frida Kahlo, Beatrice Wood, Tasha Tudor come to mind. I'm not even 1% as outré as they could be at the top of their style game, but I take comfort in their commitment to an inner vision when I feel like I'm swimming upstream against a popular fashion tide.
BTW: I do spend a good number of weeks @ our family's rental cabin in the southern oregon cascades. We are remote from town (30 mi one way) and above the snow line in winter but my 'style' there is pretty much a toss up between outdoor tech gear and Dobby the house elf. Rats! Maybe someday...

Claire and Deb, I hope you can find some great examples online.

Gaylene, you strike at the heart of last night’s lecture. O’Keefe’s wardrobe adaptations were less about the change in climate and more about creating a
look that was in harmony with the cultural environment, landscape, and lifestyle all while still being "her" and modern.

Elly, I'm sure you would have loved the lecture. The speaker was art historian Wanda Corn who is working on a book (possibly to accompany an art exhibit) about O'Keefe's wardrobe. I think the book is a long way from publication, but keep it on your radar. I agree that in her earlier years she had not fully developed a signature look, but Dr. Corn did use some very interesting examples of how as a adolescent she already exhibited a preference for simplicity and neatness and dressed quite differently from other girls her age. There is a pretty telling group shot of Georgia and her high school classmates. You probably already know that her clothes in everyday life (such as what you'd see in a snapshot) are also different than her most iconic look. I wonder if some of those more relaxed shots from the SW might be inspiration for you to play around with lighter colors. She did mostly wear black and white, but there was also denim, linen, and lighter shades of green and purple.

I've often said on the forum that O'Keeffe is one of my style icons-- she wore almost exclusively black, white, and denim with a rare occasional other neutral. She rarely wore color despite her work being so brilliant and there is a famous quote about not having enough time in the day to pick colors for getting dressed. Yet, her style is very graphic and dramatic. I don't think her earlier looks are as "her" -- there is a famous picture of her in a lace collar. But I love the menswear look she adapted in NM in the 30s and 40s. I would have loved to attend the lecture.

I have a hard time with your query-- it is a great fun question, but I have a hard time imagining it because I have a very limited list of places I'd actually like to live (i.e. stay long enough to make it worth the wardrobe investment) but a long long list of places to visit. I will have to give it some thought. I denim, deep color, and distressed or leather with depth, rugged and menswear elements, sporty elements, sculptural/draped elements, and cultural touches would all be mainstays. The overall formality of the community would determine what those "me" pieces were mixed with and in what proportions; the overall temperature/climate would determine the use of my favorite fabrications (in a hot climate the denim would be cropped loose jeans, chambray shirts, and denim jackets, the leather would be distressed bags and belts rather than boots, etc).

I'd say that moving to a different location definitely affects what we wear in ways that have nothing to do with climate. I'm reminded of a male student In one of my public speaking classes who based his entire presentation on a very visual, and very funny, observation of his city and rural outfits. Both personas were "him" but expressed a very acute sense of how his clothing would affect his acceptance and interactions with his peers in two quite different environments.

I've always been bemused at how my travel wardrobe to visit large European cities is quite different than my everday wardrobe in Western Canada. Until very recently, tucking jeans into my tall boots would cause rolled eyes among most of my ranching friends. It would be a sure sign that I wasn't from "around here". Just like wearing my worn Wrangler jeans and functional, not fashionable, cowboy boots would look strange in Paris.

Last night I attended a fascinating lecture on artist Georgia O’Keefe’s wardrobe. O’Keefe was impressively consistent in her style from her teenage years to her death, preferring tidy, simplified silhouettes that created a roundness to the body. She favored v-necks in particular and often accentuated the neckline with white. Interestingly, a close examination of her portraits and her clothing reveals that her “uniform” changed and kept pace with fashion trends and adapted to her physical environment. I found myself thinking of many of the discussions here on the forum regarding defining personal style, updating essentials with modern pieces, and dressing for our
environments. Another interesting point from the lecture was that O’Keefe wore completely different clothes during her time in New York and New Mexico yet remained true to her style aesthetic. If you had the opportunity to spend a few months each year in an place opposite to your current environment in terms of climate and formality of dress, how would you change your look while remaining true to your personal style?
