I have a replica Gees Bend quilt that I got from Anthropologie, of all places, over a decade ago. It has been on walls and beds and in yards and over couches. My grandmother was a quilter and seamstress in Alabama, born in the 1910s and passed in the early 80's. When I was a kid I just did not understand her sense of color and design AT ALL. The quilts from Gees Bend helped me understand and appreciate her a little better.

Interesting Jane, I Googled Janet Bolton. I'd never heard of her. The images of her work are so charming. And the Gees Bend quilts are so vibrant, wow.

When I was young I dabbled in patchwork for a time and really enjoyed it.

PS..hope your ankle is ok now.

There was an exhibit of Gees Bend quilts at a museum in my town -- The International Quilt Study Center and Museum at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. If you are at all interested in quilts, this museum is a must see.

I think I saw something on PBS craft in america about them -- not sure if it was this: https://vimeo.com/50174695

Some of their quilts were at a local contemporary gallery -- the more abstract ones, and they really are quite amazing in how they are put together and the choices about color and shape that are made.

I went to an exhibit of Gees Bend quilts a year or two ago at the De Young Museum in San Francisco. They had a great graphic quality to them. It must have been interesting to take a whole course on them.

Hi Fabbers

I went on a patchwork course a couple of weeks or so ago, with Janet Bolton. It was a great course and I learnt lots. Janet's work is worth looking up if you have a spare mo. There is a charm and poignancy to her work, which is so gentle.

I keep meaning to to say for those interested in sewing, or social history, or colours, or jeans, have a search for Gees Bend Quilts. Simply amazing!

Jane
