My sport is karate - so I wear a gi (a uniform for karate). I have 4 of these, and lots of sports bras. I like my karate uniform, it is quite formal and definitely puts me in the right frame of mind for class - which is very disciplined.
As a sign of respect for the teacher, our uniforms must be clean and ironed before class. Our belts must be tied correctly.

Um, ah, I think I could write a new blog about gear, cough......cough.....

:-) :-)

I am just going to list my sporting activities and say that there is gear for each and every one of them............

Running
Swimming
Rowing (like crew)
Sailing
Kayak
Paddle board
Weight lifting
Pilates
Yoga
Hot Yoga
Hiking
Camping
Bird watching
Cross country skiing
Snow shoe-ing
Down Hill skiing
Water skiing
Road Bike
Trail Bike

Maybe I missed something, but if it’s active, and it isn’t golf, tennis, or something involving flight or upper body strength (like rock climbing) I probably participate. (My son is the rock climber. I do walls though, so maybe that counts?)

This is an interesting post!

I run 3 times a week and do yoga once a week. I tend to double up in things which strictly speaking isn't necessary as it gets washed after each use and dries quickly. I go for plainish bottoms and colour on the top half and currently have:

2 pairs of long running tights, one plain black Nike, one black and white patterned Adidas.
2 long sleeve tops in turquoise and fluro pink (mizuno).
2 short sleeve tops in purple and red (Ronhill and Next).
2 vest tops, fluro orange (Ronhill) and pink ( can't remember!).
2 shorts, black/pink (matches the vest) and grey ( Karrimor).
2 Capri tights, navy/ white (tk maxx) and black/grey (Reebok)
2 zip tops, coral (Gap) and purple (ASICS).
1 running jacket (Ronhill).
Road running shoes ( ASICS), hybrid trail shoes (Saucony).

Woah, that's quite a lot of stuff. I could easily become a compulsive collector of gear!

Runcarla, yes, like you see in the Olympics. Although we are currently in AZ, land of cowboy boots and large belt buckles... I usually ride 5-7 days a week, and also wear riding clothes when I teach. I have multiples of everything, and some, mostly shirts, cross over, but really only to other outdoor activity capsules, except my nicer puffer vests that sometimes get worn in public. I also have gradients of gear, depending on whether I am being seen by clients or other professionals. Writing all this down, I really should scale down my non-working wardrobe. Like my horse clothes are a daily work wardrobe, and "real" clothes are just a weekend need.

Yah, I live in my bakery gear now. So darn practical: leggings, orange Victoria Beckham miniskirt apron, top. I was just saying on another thread how I got mistook for a hardware store employee twice yesterday! Lol.

But hey, listen I finally found a way to work my abs and get a complete workout at the bakery: inspect the giant mixers

Yes, I can relate Verdant :-)
My yoga/indoor gym wear is fairly mismatched. I’ve got:
-3 tight tops (think this might be a bit dated now?)
- 3 sports bras
-4 tight bottoms
-1 quick dry shorts
- 1 TNF raincoat
- 1 hip length puffer (thick)
- 1 hip length puffer (thin, for layering)
- ski jacket and snow pants
- 3 sweatshirts
- nylon warmup pants (so so useful!)
- 1 pair of runners

For athleisure (I’m talking outdoor activities), there is this newish brand I want to try: Indygena. Has anybody heard of it? It seems like the have excellent puffers for reasonable prices (700fill down for $525 CAD. Good right?) I really like all their styles and the hoods on their puffers are REALLY big, like Canada Goose. So important!

For indoor exercise, the best stuff for me has been NIKE. What I mean is that the seams don’t attract lint and the knits don’t pill. Lululemon looks nice the bit the nylon seams seem to get linty.
Meredith, I must try the Old Navy stuff.

Janet, I love those bottoms of yours.

Okay, I confess. I have been hiding some wardrobe purchases as sporting goods. Maybe it was the Swix quilted miniskirt and Dansko fur boots for Nordic skiing. Or the Icebreaker hoody and NorthFace thermball jacket for backpacking. Maybe the UA polo and shorts for golfing. Possibly the Prana top and capris for yoga. Can anyone else relate?

Great gear inventory, Carla!

Mine is extensive and spans seasons and activities, and bleeds through into my daily wear a lot, I confess. I'll end up wearing my hiking or running pants while out shooting photos or working at home or running errands and no one blinks an eye because athleisure and gear are so prevalent around here. I also end up wearing my graphic tees for hiking, and some long-sleeve Lululemon basic tees as daily wear, so there is a lot of crossover between my gear and my regular wardrobe.

A rough count:
- 4-5 pairs of padded cycling pants/shorts (one long and insulated, the others for more temperate seasons)
- 6 cycling jerseys (some mementoes of rides like the NYC Five Boroughs Tour)
- 1 pr cycling shoes, plus 3 pair gloves (2 fingerless, one full), helmet, and small lightweight backpack for long rides

- 2 swimsuits that function as lap-swimming suits (another 2 that are more for wearing with family and friends, and another 3 bikinis for vacations with hubs)

- 2 pairs running shorts, 2 pairs running capris, 4 pairs full length running tights/pants, 3 pairs long hiking pants in various thicknesses, 2 pairs multipurpose athletic capris, 1 pair full length yoga pants, 1 pair cropped yoga capris
- 4 sleeveless, 5 short sleeve, 6 long sleeve workout tops (used for all kinds of activity, just varying fits and thicknesses),
- 4 fitted workout jackets (great for layering or for light coverage after workout), 2 fleece jackets, 4 windbreakers in varying weight and lengths (i.e. one specifically for cycling, one more suitable for all-around wear, one suitable for arctic cold weather with layers underneath), 2 vests
- 3 pairs running shoes (I rotate and demote a pair to yard work and walking shoes when they wear out), one pair hiking boots, one pair Tevas.
- lots of socks, gloves, and hats -- including baseball style caps for running :-)

My colors are typically black bottoms -- although I did just get a (gasp) patterned pair of capris at Lululemon that I plan to wear for the yoga classes I need to start going to again. I attached a pic because Finds wouldn't work. Most of my tops are blues, greens, and berry colors. Lot of turquoise. And the occasional orange to match my bike. :-)

Fun!! I love gear, and spend a lot of time in it. Most of my gear is for backpacking or hiking. I do at least one multi-week trip each year (used to go solo; now it's with husband, kid, and dog), sometimes more if we can manage to get time off, plus lots of long weekends. We've also started to get into paddling, and have been doing overnight trips with our canoe this year, and hope to do some longer river trips next summer. In the winter, we snowshoe. Used to XC ski too, but haven't in many years. I bike too, but don't like to wear cycling gear. I'll run occasionally, usually on trails, sometimes on dirt roads, NEVER on pavement. :)

When I buy new gear, it is "day-trip grade" which means it's nice enough to wear for teaching outdoor classes, going on day hikes with friends, etc. After a couple of years, new things get demoted to "overnight grade" which means they are too grubby to wear for anything but backpacking trips. Having a mix of both grades is important! It would feel very wasteful to take something brand-new on a long trip, because by the end it would not be new anymore. Things in the day-trip grade category do get incorporated into casual everyday outfits pretty frequently. And my puffy jackets do everything: day trips, overnights, and everyday use. Hardest working garments in my whole closet!

running shorts - 2 pairs

river shorts (good for hiking too) -- 3 pairs

yoga/running tights -- 3 pairs (mostly use for theatre rehearsals!)

hiking pants -- 3 pairs (mix of lightweight and heavyweight)

skirts/dresses -- 2

tank tops -- 2

short sleeve tops -- 3

long sleeve tops/baselayer -- 4

mid-layer tops -- 2

long-john bottoms -- 3

footwear -- 1 pair trail runners, 1 pair Chaco sandals, 1 pair insulated hiking boots

Other: wind jacket, wind pants, really ugly rain jacket for backpacking, gaiters, puffy vest, lightweight and heavyweight hooded puffy jackets, sun hat, lightweight gloves, puffy mitts, merino Buff (multi-use neck gaiter), the same merino socks/bras/undies I wear every day.

Probably forgetting some things, since I have a lot of cross-over with my daily wardrobe.

JAileen - I can't stand being cold! Rubber boots with wool socks do the trick. I have one pair of alpaca socks that I save for really cold days when I'm feeling run down or tired.

Meredith - all neutrals! You need to add some 'wake me-up' colour for your morning workouts.

Esther - what kind of gear do you wear for riding? Does it look like the Ralph Lauren equestrianne, or is it more western - jeans and a heavy plaid jacket. I may be stereotyping in my ignorance. Just north of where I live there is a patch of horse country, and what I see are high boots, buff breaches, puffer jackets, and helmets or dark riding hats with a little brim (like what one sees in the Olympics). What fabric are those riding breaches made from? It must be some kind of sturdy, yet stretchy material..

I ride and train horses, so I have both summer and winter huge gear capsules. We have a small farm, and live a very outdoor lifestyle. I would say probably 60-70% of the clothing in my house is gear. It can be pretty overwhelming, and the laundry is NEVER caught up. I honestly probably need a regular clothes capsule the size of your gear capsule!

Wow Carla! Fun post. I have a tight gear capsule that I wear over and over (I know, I sound like a broken record). I actually like treating it almost like a uniform that I can pull on without thinking (I go at 5:45, and I am not awake enough to make choices). And don’t like to have too many pieces because it forces me to do laundry.

1 pair black Brooks running shoes
3 Reebok v-neck t-shirts in gray, and blue
3 Old Navy compression leggings (full length and Capri)
3 Champion compression sports bras
1 pair running shorts
1 pair biking shorts
4 Under Armor headbands (assorted colors)
Loads of black socks
1 blue fleece

I do have some other pieces for special weather, activities but the items above are the things in weekly rotation.

I have a lot of gear for birding - warm jackets, warm boots, good hats. Birding is like hiking, but involves lots of standing around in the cold and wind. If I'm not moving I slowly freeze.

Sal - you've got that right about fit and feel! I only wear pullover compression style bra tops after getting rubbed raw from a conventional bra closure on a different style of sports bra. I gave it a couple of tries, with the same problem. Toss!

Jane, Smittie - having fun gear helps keep you motivated, and can also be an opportunity to take some crazy colour risks that you might not take with your regular wardrobe. I have a white and black bike, black helmet, and lots of black bottoms. I like to do bright/colourful tops and co-ordinate with my footwear. Stuff wears out at different rates and you are probably most likely to replace shoes. There was also a time when most women's stuff came only in pink and purple - no more!

Style fan - I am very interested in what you wear for yoga. I like my Capri length tights, tanks, and the RELAX sweater best. I am intrigued by the gear two of the better teachers don - loose cotton ethnic trousers with dropped crotches, and cotton t-shirts. There are a couple of regular (older) participants who dress similarly. Most do tights and tanks, though.

Lisa p, DH has a curling capsule, and a golf capsule, though the later is in need of refreshing. Whenever I go to the golf stores or pro-shop with him, I get tempted to take up the sport - just so that I can shop for gear! I so want a pair of saddle shoe style golf shoes!

LOL! - Joy, not hips, but butt! Poor DS #1 is very slim (165 lb at 6ft 4in). A couple years back I mentioned that I thought his training was starting to build up his backside - only to realize that he was wearing super padded long distance cycle bottoms! (Some bottoms have more padding than others!). (see pic below for examples of padded backsides)

Karen - every activity seems to have gone through growing pains to accomodate women. You would think that the days of 'shrink it and pink it' would be done. Though things are getting better, with designs and cuts specific to women's physiques, women on either end of the size spectrum (petites and plus) seem to be poorly served with limited options.

Post your gear pics and recommendations - you might be able to help your YLF sisters with your finds!

Wow, RunCarla! Hats off to you for doing the triathlon AND now weight lifting. You’re awesome!

Lisap: I wish I had such an extensive collection of gear. I would love to know what the latest gear trends are.

*Gym/Soccer mom*:
I have a lot of stuff that is completely mismatched. I don’t know how to get it all in shape. Do I need to pick a colour palette? Is building a gear capsule exactly the same as building a regular wardrobe capsule?

Not Runcarla, but the bike shorts are padded in the crotch, not hip. And they would likely give an uncomfortable "diaper effect" under streetwear. I think they do make undergarments for the less curvaliscious among us.

I have a lot of gear, and wear a gear outfit almost every day. I day-hike and nordic ski as much as I can, and am trying to go more regularly to Pilates/Yoga. If I can't hike or ski, I try to hit the gym for some cardio on the stepper or elliptical. As I age I find I sleep so much better if I got sweaty that day.

I have moved to a lot of merino wool (Icebreaker, Smart Wool, and Ibex) for both gear and casual one-bag travel. Its comfort and odor resistance is truly amazing.

I definitely need more attractive gear! While continuing to prioritize comfort and function over looks, I need to investigate the better availability of petites (Thank you Athleta!) and even tailoring. Hard to find truly technical Gortex shell pants with side zips in short lengths, no one makes technical jackets in petite! Arcteryx offers some pants in short length, only only SML, not XS. Arrghh!

I never post gear pics because I am prioritizing comfort over appearance. But I'd love to see more ideas of how to hit both marks.

Runcarla, you have an enviable gear collection! Question: would padded bike shorts work under other clothed like trousers to give the appearance/fit of hips where none exist? I need help in this area!

What a great collection.... Especially the bling:)

I agree that it is easy to become attached to the favourite tights or swimsuit but also if a piece does not work- it really does not work!!

Mine is a bit different as I am mostly a walker/gym-bunny/casual biker and jogger - I will try and post some pics on this thread later today.

In her response to a recent thread, Smittie noted that our posts don't often include our gear, however gear can take up quite a bit of space in our closets and our budgets. I decided to pick up the gauntlet and post my gear wardrobe. There are capsules for: running, biking, swimming, gym/weight training, and yoga, though some items cross over to other capsules. There are also accessories.

#1 race t-shirts, tanks, bottoms (2 X 'bun huggers', 2 X Capri length, 2 X tights, sports bra's
#2 padded bottoms for cycling - 1 tights, 4 X shorts, cycling jerseys X 4, triathlon race suits x 2, bike helmet, cycling gloves X 2
#3 yoga pants X 2, RELAX sweater, warm-up jackets X 3, fleece hat and fleece gloves, swimsuit, silicon swim cap, goggles (all Speedo), Garmin
#4 3 X running shoes (1 for racing), 3 X cycling shoes (1 for cycle fit, 1 cycling specific (ratchet closure) 1 for triathlon (Velcro closure)' flip flops
#5 Speedo bag for hauling around lots of gear, Nike bag for regular gym days, yoga mat with carry strap, lucky water bottle
#6 special occaision bling!
#7 heading to the gym
Not shown - wetsuit, socks, head bands and hair clips

Items range from 20 years to 1 month old. There are no closet orphans-if something doesn't work, it gets tossed pretty quick. I actually tend to get emotionally attached to my gear and have trouble letting go. A 5 year old Speedo bit the dust this summer, and needs to be replaced since I like 2 in rotation, and I need to replace a pair of running shoes. Later this month I'm getting a pair of shoes specific for weight training - they are wedges with stiff heels that pitch you forward for squat manoeuvres. (I'm currently using 2.5 lb plates under my heels.

Very few gear items cross over to regular wear or vice versa. The RELAX sweater is the exception, and the yoga pants sometimes are worn as 'leisure wear'. I will wear gear on my way to the gym, but wear street clothes afterwards (I shower at the gym).

Your idea of gear might be different, based on your pursuits. After years of being DH's 'research assistant' I'm not a fan of hiking and camping, and have retired my field clothes and bug hat! There is no longer a dog to walk, I don't fish, keep bees, perform in a band or ballroom dance (now there's a fun 'gear' capsule).

Please do post about your gear, either here or start your own thread!
