Anne - if this is a matronly shape, then I would like one please!! You look gorgeous! And I adore you in that red turtleneck. I had a denim skirt with buttons down the front and tossed it after seeing it in pictures. I did NOT need those lumps and bumps from the skirt in front. But honestly, you look fabulous!

Yes Shiny - that would be my worry too - that if I sized up the rest would be too baggy etc. Couldn't size down anyway, this was the smallest size

The shoulder seam is set in a little - I love your idea that this "gives the illusion of smaller shoulders". Like you I am pretty sensitive about my shoulders!! I grew up in a house with a pile of discarded shoulder pads as we all took them out. So maybe it is all good.

Anne, do you think this top is too small in the shoulder? It looks fine to me. I imagine if you sized up the top would be too baggy and too long. If you sized down it'd be too tight, no?

But I may not have a good eye here either: I am so sensitive about my shoulders I admit that sometimes I deliberately choose a shoulder that is slightly smaller (assuming the rest of the top fits elsewhere). Because I figure that having the seam set in a tiny bit gives the illusion of narrower shoulders. Know what I mean?

Sorry that I have taken so long to get back to this thread

Shabby chick - I hear you - and the experience of the YLF forum has really expanded my empathy for the fuller busted.!

Unfrumped - you have raised some interesting points and I have been pondering them and will try to think them through. I appreciate you taking the time to write them all down.
Firstly - I have no problems with the neckline aspect of a turtleneck. I have a longish neck, small bust and long waist and I think those are the 3 elements which can make it work. Plus I just have to wear them for about 3 months of the year as I am too cold otherwise!! (I run cold and have an unheated house) They are usually just a base layer that is substantially covered up - it is only now it is spring that I feel warm enough to even wear an outfit like those above where this layer is on show. I am not sure that V necks are a great choice on me unless they are part of a collar. I haven't quite articulated why, but I have purged most of them.

Secondly there is the other point about having a long stretch of fittedness. I suppose this was what I was questioning. I had a big look through old photos a few months ago and decided that a look that was fitting through the body seemed to be the most flattering for me. I suppose the side view was making me question that to some extent. My main issue is that my thighs are on the generous side compared to the rest of me, so if I don't show my torso, it looks like I am even more blocky (all square shoulders and thick thighs.
Another issue though, is that I have short legs, and have to be careful about where tops end ( to your point). I didn't really have a sense that this one was too long, but I am really drawn to long sweaters, so maybe I have a blind spot about this.

I am a very careful shopper, so I know what you mean about getting it right. When I originally took the photos it was partly with the intention of asking about the shoulder fit - but you can't see the seam details anyway. I wasn't worried about them, but when I shopped with Stringy a while back, she pointed out i was choosing items that were too small around the shoulder.
I am not really keen on rolling or scrunching the sleeves ( sounds like YLF heresy, doesn't it? but I suspect that the top will move up a bit with movement

I'm going to play devil' s advocate here and encourage you to have fun analyzing what elements take you where you want to go, even as you put together outfits that are fine. A turtleneck that falls low hip and is worn untucked creates a long upper body line and as it is knitwear, creates a large area of , say, body con and " layer- con" where any lapses in fit are more noticeable.

In tops, I've found it useful to separate the elements of neckline and length. First I've tried to identify which necklines are most flattering. And conversely a few types that just no longer look right. I don't buy those anymore, ever, no matter how gorgeous the color or low the price.

Just as there are perfect pant lengths , for me there are perfect top lengths that vary with what pants or skirt. Maybe sometimes there is a " universal" length but I found that proportions make I difference in my frump factor.

Finally, the neckline and length do interact for proportion, as above.

If you like how you look in a turtleneck from the standpoint of neckline, I would next experiment with the other proportions. You can play with the one you've got by turning up the hem, rolling or scrunching the sleeves, etc. What give it better proportion with the skirt? Does that top fit well everywhere or is there another brand that does? Remember, it's not our bodies that' are off in any way - it's that every top and bottom is cut differently and when you see the right one on you, you' ll see the difference.

Or, play with other necklines. Would a V - neck give you more of the look you're going for?

It took me a long time to figure out I was settling for fits and lengths that were not most
flattering because I was too impatient and impulsive a shopper AND because I just assumed there was nothing better. When I branched out more, saying, this fit isn't my best and it's not me, it's because I just haven't found it yet, I began to see okay , this year ____ brand has a ___ that's just right for me. Wait , and it will come.

This doesn't mean that every outfit I put on now is perfectly or equally fabutastic. It
means I think I have become a much better and more realistic critic of my own outfits so I can have a goal for new purchases or for re- mixing. Not to mention trying to keep learning, as from YLF, why things work or don't.

(Although I said in a recent post that I was thinking of dying this one, I had already decided that it is too near being worn out to be worth it. The problem highlighted in this tread is confirming that decision.) They are not easily found though.

Camera angles are tricky. I know that we are supposed to think that the camera never lies, but I think that this photo is just that unfortunate combination of posture, skirt front bulkiness with a sweater pulled over it, and your stance with your hands behind your back!

I've never seen any hint of a "matronly" figure in any of your previous photos, so, unless you've been airbrushing everything that you've previously posted, I'd just have a good laugh at this picture!

I'm with Suz, it's the skirt not you. I have such a hard time with denim skirts for this very same reason -- do not like the side view at all, because it bunches, especially because my hips are on the narrow side (and yours are too). The only denim skirt that I can tolerate is one that is cut without a waistband, and that zips in the back not the front. Even then if the denim is too stretchy, forget it.

You look great to me. I would certainly not describe you as matronly! What Suz and Mo say is true. Try a flat-front skirt, and stand straight with you shoulders back, and I think you will be pleased with how much of a difference that makes.

(My daughter is in martial arts, and the teachers are always gently reminding them to stand up straight, shoulders back, tummy in. They make the kids do it while they're sitting, too. They talk a lot about posture and the prevention of back problems. I think it's lost on her, but it sure makes a lot of sense to me! I totally have a little pooch and a sore back if I don't watch my posture!)

Watch me. And learn from my mistakes. Watch Shannon and learn from her successes. Read the tips for apples.

Body skimming tops. Avoid princess seams, which although flattering, ride up and create a baggy effect through the bust and shoulders. Vertical lines down the front of the body. Accessories and necklines that pull attention to the shoulders. Pencil skirts, strangely enough. Tunics.

And don't be too hard on yourself. You are a lovely woman.

Okay JR, re-read your own advice and follow it...

Oh, Suz has a good point about the skirt! I have a cotton a line that does the same thing right where it zips up. I'm beginning to think side (or back) zippers are the only answer for this silhouette of skirt.

Anne, first, that turtleneck is gorgeous on you and a brilliant colour for you. Just lovely! And it is so much fun with the vest! Are those new boots as well?

As for your shape, there is nothing at all wrong with it. The problem is the denim skirt. Those are all bumpy in the front. If you put on a skirt that doesn't have the bumps and stand without your hands behind your back, I think you will see a different silhouette.

Oh, Anne - you are in fine shape!! I honestly think you should start with posture before you go looking for dressing a whole new shape. Standing slouchy can do that to anyone's side view. See if you don't notice a huge difference rolling your shoulders back and down and tilting your pelvic bone under. Stand tall, lovely lady!

I was going to post this outfit to show you another zippy vest possiblity and also my red turtleneck, which I got a few months ago and wear all the time. I wore this a couple of days ago.

It turns out that as I am still in my learning curve with the new camera the front shot is blurry and you can't see the nice ribbed section at the top

But what I am shocked at is the side view. Oh boy look at the difference! I need some tips for dressing this matronly figure!
