Thanks Jenava, this is the first time I've tried this rise and I think you're right. The Kut from the Kloth look really nice but they don't seem to have a longer inseam.

Velvetychocolate thank you for explaining it so well. Even when I was 20 I liked my pants to come up to just below my ribcage so these lower rises are really driving me bonkers. The only pair of jeans I own now has a rise an inch higher and I still get muffin top with those. My favourite pants are a side zip, no waistband, wool crepe which are impossible to find and really don't suit my very casual lifestyle anymore. In a casual pant, my favourite which are a bit too small with recent weight gain come to just above my belly button (so right under rib cage when sitting). Funnily enough in the Gap straight legs both my son and my husband commented how long my legs were and how they don't see them in the baggy saggy pants I wear. Now I don't want to look like an ice cream cone either which is probably what would happen with a high high rise and more narrow leg. The skinny pants were much much better but too narrow at the bottom to go with my must wear shoes.

Thanks Suz. Trying to get a longer inseam is getting to be a real pain too...sigh. I'm trying to be PPP, how many pairs of pants/jeans have I bought and returned is getting to be a factor in the household...lol. Dh is not keen on returning to Gap at Bayshore, added to that it's under construction so the parking is horrid.

Claire you are so sweet, thank you for the compliments. The shoes are super comfortable and my back and hip are liking them so I am very happy. I asked the SA about dying the shoes and she said a colour (red) would not be good. Something to do with the process the leather would have to go through. She had heard of putting a metallic on top, either in an antique type wash which is more bold or something which would appear pewterish. Dh and I discussed it but with the very black soles and platform we thought that it would look weird. I may not have veins but many many scars on my legs. I had a lot of fun getting them though so all is good.

Yesterday while shopping I saw some beautiful tops, which I was not shopping for so walked away. They are really not what I should be wearing either, a silk blouse is just not necessary for cooking, baking, cleaning the toilet. The t-shirt, fabric unknown, is more of a possibility though...but no, I need pants first! DO NOT GO INTO ARITZIA, it is very very dangerous.

Good luck with the jeans, Freckles. I'm going to keep my eye on you to see what you find as I have similar fit issues. A good straight leg will be great with your new sandals, which I meant to tell you are not bad at all! I loved your cheeky blue toes with them. I would seriously wear those with a skirt and I noticed from that post that you have great legs. Not a vein on them. You could even get crazy and wear little pastel socks with them like annagybe did with her monster sandals. Then people will be more fixated on the socks than the sandals! Or you could dye them a fun color if you don't like the black. Just because you have fussy feet doesn't mean you can't have fun with fashion!

Freckles, I think that's the proportion in my Real Straights, too, but I will check.

If yours are not comfortable due to the muffin top issue, I would exercise Angie's mantra PPP (persistent, patient, picky) and wait until you find the right trousers. Fit is crucial.

BTW, I also own a pair of the Kut Diana skinnies...and agree that these are not very skinny - more like a straight leg jean, or at least not at all like a legging jean. They don't stretch much, either - just a bit in the seat, but it goes back after washing.

I have the GAP Long and Lean jeans and the Really Skinny pants (not the jeans) - both stretch out a bit, but not enough where the 'muffin top factor' (and avoidance thereof) would come into play.

As others have said, I really think the rise of the pants/jeans is the main thing when it comes to avoiding the so-called "muffin top." I used to think that such pants were too small or that my own body shape just wasn't meant for certain styles, but in the end - it really does come down to the rise.

In terms of something 'close to skinnies' - the Kut from the Kloth skinny jeans (not a true skinny, but close enough!) work well for me, and I think this is because the rise is a little bit higher than some other skinny jeans I've tried. Just for the record, I've experienced "muffin top" with jeans that are the exact same size as other jeans I've tried where I didn't have this problem at all - and this is even within the same brand.

I'm 100% convinced it's all a matter of rise when it comes to avoiding this problem. Sizing up or down might not help at all, if the rise just happens to hit you in the wrong place. Come to think of it - I've tried on pants and jeans that were clearly too big for me, and I *still* saw the dreaded 'muffin top'.

I recommend going and trying on a whole bunch of jeans in different brands and styles and getting to know which brands/styles do not have this effect on you.

In the meantime, try the GAP Really Skinny pants - these worked well for me last fall and winter, and no muffin top to speak of, and I was able to tuck them into all kinds of boots and so on.

Yes, jeans stretch out - but the thing is, if there's too much of the muffin-top/roll-age thing going on to begin with, all that will happen is that there'll be a slightly smaller 'muffin top' happening once the jeans stretch out a bit.

What I'm trying to say is that the cause of this problem is where the jeans hit you in the mid-section, and this has a lot more to do with the rise than the size. I have sized up in jeans/pants, thinking that this would correct the problem, and ...no, it didn't really work. I ended up with baggy pants *and* a muffin top.

It's the rise, not the size.

If you're getting muffin top but they're still a bit big maybe it's too low rise?

If you're casting around for other options I like Kut from the Kloth, but I am curvy and like a 9 inch rise in jeans (anything lower and I get muffin top/too much tummy and feel uncomfortable like I'm hitching the up all day). But, I'm not sure if KK does a straight leg jean? Their Diana skinny isn't TOO too skinny so maybe you'd have luck with that.

(ETA - I can't tell if you need a LOWER rise or a HIGHER rise from your post? Sorry if I'm off base...)

I'd return those Gap jeans if I were you...Or try the bigger size just to determine for sure if it's a rise problem and not just a sizing issue.

Thanks Suz. The fabric content is 80% cotton, 19% polyester and 1% spandex.

Thanks Gaylene. They do sell Jag here apparently but not anywhere near here and as I don't drive would be a real trial to get to. From the site the peri looks more like the leg opening I would need. I wonder what would happen once I clipped my insulin pump on the pocket...

I'm really reconsidering the rise on the real straights even in a size larger. When I start off with a high rise in my other jeans, which are too big, they end up lower than the rise on these. If these fall down any I'm toast.

My Gap Real Straights (bought last year) stretched a bit after a couple of wearings, but washing seemed to restore them to their original fit. If you're having trouble with a muffin top, I'm not sure that the waist would stretch enough to eliminate that issue.

Without a doubt, though, my hands-down favorite jeans right now are my Jag Malia's, which Angie recommended in her NAS picks the other day. It seems like the Jags didn't work for Kari and Marianna, but I'd definitely suggest trying a pair if you have slim legs but need some control through the mid-section (I'm an IT). I call them my "old lady pull-ups" but they are an incredibly flattering and comfortable jean that I wear everywhere. The leg is closer to a straight leg than a skinny on me which, I think, is a bit more age appropriate and the upper part smooths everything out so I can wear a close-fitting tank with nary a ripple or bulge. And, they are as comfortable as a sweatpant. I recently bought a pair of Malia's for my sister, a curvy hourglass, who had refused to wear anything but bootcuts, but has now reconsidered since she tried these jeans.

Jag is a Canadian company and you can order online if you don't have a nearby store. And both my sister and I would agree with Angie that you need to go down one size for the best fit.

I have the straight leg Gaps. Mine haven't stretched much, if at all. The stretch (such as it is) has mostly been in the bum area for me, but again, it is very minimal. But check the fabrication content. With each batch, Gap changes that. See how much cotton/poly/spandex there is - that is relevant info! Let us know.

Thanks Gaylene.

I basically have a very soft pregnant belly look. The skinnies were AMAZING on me but I think dh would have a problem with the very skinny legs and they DID NOT GO WITH MY SHOES. Barefoot they were incredible but my orthepedic shoes are a necessity. The perfect jeans would have the rise of the skinny but the legs of the straight.

NYDJ are not good on me as I need the control in the stomach but not the legs. The pair I tried was trying to get rid of saddlebags and just did not look good. Have not come across Jag jeans here.

The straight leg gaps sort of fall down a bit right now... Pics are definately needed.

How did yours stretch out Gaylene?

Yes but I'm just wondering how they stretch and bag out. I don't want to end up with BF jeans with the droppy crotch. The size 10 were a little big at the back of the waist but these ones the muffin top is accentuated at the moment.

Edit: I'm not used to such a low rise either so very different for me.

I think jeans are one of those items that need to fit when you buy them. The fit should be snug, but not "I can just manage to zip them up" tight. IMO, most jeans will stretch out, but not always in the right places. And, if you carry any weight in your middle, you need to find a pair that don't give you muffin top--that, in my experience, does not go away even when the jeans stretch out. I also have found that finding the right rise is vital; sometimes a higher rise can solve both the muffin top and falling down issues.

It IS possible to find a good-fitting pair of jeans, but, in my experience, just sizing down for a tight fit does not work with mature, or curvy, body shapes. My Gap Real Straight jeans were a snug, but not overly tight, fit in the store. They came up high enough on me to eliminate any muffin top. My sister, on the other hand, who is carrying a bit more weight around her middle, had trouble with them for exactly the reason you've given. She prefers her Jag jeans or NYDJ which have a higher rise on her body.
