Shannon I have skimmed the replies and I see varying responses so without really reading any of them properly may I say two things:)

The Gap ones IMHO look the best. I really like the dark wash and the cut of these. I feel if you size up they are just going to look they don't fit and add a lot of uncessary fabric to the mix.

Secondly, what's the motivator for wearing boyfriends jeans? BTW I think they look great but I have assessed quite quickly that the true boyfriend cut it not my friend and if I give it a go, it will be with a skinner version because I think it's more flattering on me and is more in keeping with my overall style. Don't get me wrong, I do like these on you, I just wonder how they fit your style.

I would love to see you style these with some Shannon flavours, vintage blouse etc?

Girl, you know I'm not happy unless I'm fretting about SOMETHING! Seriously, you made my day with your decision. You're giving me too much credit though - I wouldn't be able to push your boundaries if you weren't asking to be pushed. You will end up loving these, I bet. Keep up the pictures as you experiment - it's a whole diffferent style challenge.

I think they look great! I've been wanting to get some. Unfortunately, Gap in Canada doesn't sell talls (like they don't sell petites). Yours fit exactly how I picture BF jeans to fit. I saw a woman wearing some in Costco the other day with a plain t-shirt, cool python looking blazer and yellow loafers and have wanted some ever since. (She was the most stylish person I've seen in Costco, lately...lol--she also had a super fun bleached blonde pixie cut). Anyway, I think the Gap ones are great on you. I'll be interested to see if you decide if you like them or not.

Gosh I feel bad that you lost sleep on my account Una! I should have phoned you as I also was thinking about it during the night (lol)!

I'm feeling exactly the same way about the BF jeans as I did when I first got my Wit & Wisdom skinnies - remember how I kept hemming and hawing, and wondering if they looked ok, if someone with my body type could wear them and essentially driving all the YLFers crazy with my insecurities? Kind of the same thing I'm doing here, isn't it?

It's a new shape, a new style and as you have said, mental comfort. I'm enjoying stretching my style wings even though it sometimes causes me stress and when I looked in the mirror last night with the Gap jeans rolled to the longer length paired with my Doc Saras, I saw potential. I want to experiment with this look for fun and isn't that what we're supposed to do?

So I'm keeping the Gap BF jeans, rolled to the longer length and am going to play with them. I'm going to try them with tees, my BB lavender button down, my J Jill silk shirts, etc. I'm going to try them with all my Docs, with different belts, maybe even try a dressy version with my black leather-trimmed tuxedo blazer.

So Una, I really want to thank you. You are always my voice of reason helping me to figure out why I'm feeling the way I'm feeling and my champion for trying new things.

Onward...

(posted at the same time Jonesy - thank you so much!)

I'm so glad Angie chimed in (and high five right back)! And I have to say that I was totally nodding along to Una's last reply--I could have written most of it! I also have a hard time, psychologically, with sheath dresses or other body-con looks, and I've always had a tomboy/androgynous part of my style *and* have almost always worn clothes that fit very loosely. So wearing oversized baggy jeans feels like coming home to me, very comfortable, very me, so it's not a stretch, psychologically, for me at all. But only you can decide if they are *you* or not.

I do think the styling is key too. If you had posted them all styled up, with a loose top semi-tucked, vs. the tank, I'm guessing that some of the naysayers might have thought differently :).

Shannon, I was awake thinking about this last night. I think the issue is mental comfort and eye adjustment.

Think about it this way: I feel completely uncomfortable in fitted sheath dresses. In order to wear one and feel unselfconscious, I'd have to wear such a dress two sizes too big, and that would be a fashion crime and negate the whole point of a sheath dress. So I stick to shifts and looser styles for my own sake, not because I *can't* wear them, but because I can't wear them and feel like myself.

Now in my Gap BF jeans, I feel totally cool, tough, hip, tomboyish, and still feminine. They make me feel like ME.

I see lots of style bloggers wearing these jeans but sizing down one or two sizes to get a tight fit. And that's fine, but it's not really embracing the look, IMHO. Like Echo, I've been wearing my pants this way since I was 18, when I (sigh) could fit into boy's skateboard-style baggy Levis.

I truly think the Gaps fit you just as they should; now it's up to you to decide if you can get used to wearing them. I think you can, absolutely.

Can I ask you two final questions Angie and then that's it with this whole BF issue?

1. Should I look at sizing up for more slouch or is this fit fine? They are comfortable.
2. Do you personally think it's a look I can pull off successfully (with the right footwear and top)?

I prefer the ones from the Gap. The rinse is what does it for me - along with the baggier fit on the thighs. I vote those if they are comfy on the waist.

I'm so glad you chimed in Angie - I have pictures of the two styles in the first batch of photos in this thread. Is that sufficient for your eyes? I'm not sure if my software at work (where I am now....ssshhhhhh....don't tell anyone) will let me pull out the photos and put them in a separate thread and my photos are loaded on my PC at home.

I do like the length of the Gap ones in the second set of photos in this thread, where they are longer.

FWIW, I love the Gap style too - but need to see the comparison with it.

The Gaps need to be shortened because the rolls look too heavy to my eye. I'd hack a bit off with scissors if you decide to keep them.

I like these ones on you when rolled at the longer length AND with a boxy or flowing top like the denim one in the first few shots. I recently bought BF jeans and although it took a little to get used to the "slouch" I like them now and also have rolled mine just above the ankle (CocoLion - Denise) made the same suggestion for me as for you on this. I definitely have hips and thighs but I am having fun with the jeans! I think they are a cute and very sporty look on you!

"I'm also not interested in pursuing the look just to be on trend. It still has to be somewhat flattering, you know?"

Just wanted to chime in and say I totally understand this! I'm feeling ambivalent about the BF trend for the same reason. I think at this point I'm going to stick with pegging my old one-size-too-big jeans (the ones my stepson mistook for his own!) because I think they fit the balance between participating in a trend and still wearing an item that is somewhat flattering on my body.

Thanks VC and Manidipa! I'm still thinking on it...but in the light of day, I'm feeling more positive about the Gap BF jeans. I prefer the longer length and I like them with the Sara oxfords. I just need to play with the tops to go with.

BTW - the pink tank wasn't meant to be worn with the jeans - it's just what I had on at the time.

Just popping in to say I love these on you, so much more than the other ones! The slouch is perfect --- not too baggy; the wash is fab; the behind (excuse the graphic!) is just fine. My only issue with the initial set of photos was the length and the heft of the roll --- but Denise is right on the money there, and they actually (counterintuitively) look better with the longer length!

One thing to keep in mind, Shannon --- you might need to get a more blousy top or a boxy shirt or more voluminous T-shirt of top to 'read' the whole look right. I don't think tanks are the best partner here for the slouch balance, for non-IT figures. Which is why I like the blue shirt partnership waaaay more than the others.

I'll be the outlier and say that I think the GAP BF jeans are really nice on you, and have a lot of potential. I think it's just a matter of rolling/pegging them "just so" - ie. I think what annagybe said about pegging them is spot-on. You just need to narrow the bottoms a wee bit, and you can do this by turning the pant legs inward (toward your calf) before rolling them up. I like the colour and style of the GAP version much more than the Alfred Sung version. I think these are a lot more fab than you realize - and that the only thing potentially 'wrong' with them is that the bottoms aren't slim/tucked enough close to your calves.

Return the Alfred Sung pair ...keep the GAP version and try them out a bit more. I'd love to see the GAP BF jeans "pegged" as annagybe suggested and paired with ...do you have one of those fab BB shirts? All crisp and and in a fresh, kind of feminine colour, and that somehow juxtaposes beautifully because it's a pretty colour and yet it's very menswear-ish and starchy looking? Pairing this with the GAP BF jeans might be just the thing!

I don't think you need or want to size up on the GAP BF jeans. It's just a matter of getting the bottom of the pants to look a bit slimmer.

I like them much better cuffed slightly longer, and I think they are quite flattering that way. I wonder if a lot of the difference in opinion comes down to deep-seated views about BF jeans in general,. Some people simply don't like the look and never will, and there's nothing wrong with that. I have a poisoned eye for some looks, regardless of how much others like them, but BF jeans aren't one of those for me.

I am showing my age here (41), but I remember before there were BF cut jeans. In school, all the women's/girls jeans came up to my ribs and high-waisted was the norm. I and a number of my friends actually went out and bought men's jeans because we didn't want the waist so high. This became pretty popular, and manufacturers - assuming it was JUST a waist issue - started making low-rise women's jeans. They got lower to the point of obscenely low and they still weren't selling as well as they had expected. Women wanted what men's jeans offered - the slouchy, comfortable, lower-waisted kind of style. It took forever before manufacturers finally "got it" and actually started making jeans for women with that aesthetic in mind.

My point in my rambling here is that I was wearing men's jeans when I was 18, so the BF jean look is near and dear to me, and on you the Gap jeans nail the look, IMO. I vote to keep them.

I still don't like this style on you, Shannon. As qpswan said, there are more flattering styles out there and mostly boyfriend jeans look good on tall and thin. I concur-I have seen it numerous times on women and models in the magazines. Models in the magazines usually have these worn with heels to elongate the look. As for real women, I haven't seen too many women pull this look off. I think, in your particular case, these have a shortening and widening effect. Sorry, hon, if i am being too blunt:(

I prefer these to the AS ones as well. The wash is much better! I like them with the longer length. I think with BF jeans, if you want to wear them shorter, you need to chop and/or taper to get rid of some of the excess volume.

I like them! I like them better than the Pure ones. They look nice and slouchy and comfortable, they aren't as saggy in the bum like mine. they look cute with the oxfords.

I vote keep but only if you are into the boyfriend jean aesthetic on its own merits --- it is a different look, but I think this is the closest so far.

Shannon, I prefer these to the other pair, especially in terms of the rinse, and I do like them better cuffed at a longer length. I think they are cute--only you can decide if you feel fab in them and love them!

I don't think you have to be a certain body type or age to look good in looser jeans. In fact, there are lots of people who are replying to this thread who have been wearing BF jeans recently and looking fab! And I know that Angie has a pair, and she just turned 42 :).

To be blunt, I think that you could find jeans that look much better on you! These ones are not flattering your petite figure.

I am not a fan of the boyfriend jean (here I go showing my age) because it is one of those trends that only looks good on tall, skinny 19 year olds. At my age, I don't want to look like I am wearing my father's jeans from the Depression and the last thing I need to wear is something "slouchy" because my body is "slouchy" enough on its own...

I do think the longer length is better (thanks Denise!). Maybe it's just because it's a silhouette I'm not used to on me. If I recall, I was just as hesitant with my first pair of skinnies.

Ok - here are the last two photos of the Gap ones, with the cuffs down/legs longer. I'm starting to wonder if I have to work so hard to make this look work for me, then maybe it's NOT for me.

I'm also not interested in pursuing the look just to be on trend. It still has to be somewhat flattering, you know?
