Yes I totally agree. There are variations with some trends really taking off in some places. NZ is also a country that likes to wear black, I notice this when I travel. I doubt plaid will be as popular here as in the US, as we tend to a less preppy look in general.

Of course within the US there is a huge variation of styles- we noticed that between Portland, Oregon, San Francisco, Tulsa, Arizona,

Yes only a tiny lag. I suspect too that the big factories in China etc shape what we get. A friend in manufacturing said that when you go to the factory to make the garments they seek slight modifications to the designers ideas so they can use universal patterns etc for their clients across the world....

Hmm Yes, I picked up a magazine recently and Boho fashion was featured there.
It is things like the latest must-wear jean shape that seem to still take ages to become more mainstream here. I still haven't seen BF jeans on but a few people (other than myself) in the last few years

Yes, I've noticed this trend too.
And I'm smiling about Dimity's comment re Melbourne and black. So true, even in high summer.

I have been noticing this for some time. And I agree it must have a lot to do with the accessibility of clothing on line. I couldn't find great harem leggings here in Aus so I bought them on line from the US, but most things that take my fancy can be found here not long after I see them.

I am ambivalent about the opening of Zara and similar shops in Australia and feel that fashion is becoming homogenised across the world. I think architecture is also the same; and that we are losing some of our country's individuality. I think this is also occurring in other places around the world and not just here. Perhaps it is a 1st world outcome of the shrinking world due to the use if IT. Having said that I enjoy being able to choose style ideas from other regions

ElleH, when I visit Melbourne, I feel that they are more fashion forward than here in Queensland. They're pretty 'with it'! I always try to pack a lot of black when I go there. Melbourne+fashion=black it seems.

I hope so. Some time ago I read an article that we were the six months or more behind, but that they thought that it would change because Australians are actually pretty game to try new looks so they felt Australia would start to lead the world. That seems like a pretty grandiose statement and I doubt it's true, but I do agree that the online world is having a big influence and now we can see what's around, we don't have to settle for what they tell us we can have.

I'm an Aussie who lives in LA & I too noticed the gap closing when I go home. I also find Melbourne folk adopting modern trends before the folk I see in my part of Los Angeles.

Something I've been noticing recently is that it seems like the gap between northern and southern hemisphere fashion is closing. Obviously we have opposite seasons in terms of spring/summer vs autumn/winter but only a few years ago it seemed like there was a massive lag (at least the six months if not longer) and yet now I feel like we are starting to see boho elements and flares are creeping into the late summer early autumn collections in some stores. It isn't universal but it feels 'different' to what used to happen.

I think it is partly because our department stores are under presssure to compete with on-line sources and so are bringing in more high end designer items and partly that they are under pressure to compete with the new fast fashion sources like Zara (who are relatively new to Australia). Blogging and instagram are no doubt also having an influence. Stores like our Aussie Target creating lines like their 'Runway to Rack' seems like a clear example of this.

Am i imagining it or is southern hemisphere fashion creeping forward compared to where it used to be?
