I thought tie-dye wasn't for me either, but I've seen a couple versions in more minimalist/neutral palettes that are really appealing! Can't say I'm not tempted. https://www.garmentory.com/sal.....in-tie-dye

I definitely agree with you about needing different colours at home vs in a workplace. Crisp black/white/navy outfits that seemed fine in a classroom seem very stark against my household backdrop of warm woods, cream walls and lots of green plants. I'm sure this is part of why I'm reaching for more and more earth tones and soft/heathery/textured fabrics.

The tie dye seems too partyish for at home to me- almost like inviting another person to the house! I had thought last year it could be good for Sundays at home doing chores, but nah. I'll save mine for the beach and festivals (when they're a thing again).

I think a lot of people are wearing more color and pattern now, given the popularity of the tie dye loungewear! Maybe it's that my house is cheerier than my offices- light colors and windows vs grey and tiny.
Forgot to respond about vests. I have used them as a solution before, but don't own any now. I'm better off not buying the problematic tops than to buy a vest to try to make them work.

I think you’re onto something when you say your ideas for winter replicate your summer outfit formula. If it works, stick with it for sure.
Myself, I’m more with Angie on this. As a pretty neutral dresser at heart, these times are making me want to wear MORE color and pattern... not loud perse, but something to cheer me up and keep me energized to deal with the constant bad news and emotional whirlwinds. To be clear, I don’t dress louder than before, I just haven’t stopped wearing my ‘fun’ clothes. Only party wear is benched until further notice.

Too partyish is exactly how it feels. I have lots of bell sleeves and tie dye, things that belong at festivals and parties. Though things are opened up a bit more, I want nothing to do with it until I know it's 100% safe.

It’s interesting how the pandemic is affecting our fashion choices, both in the obvious way (WFH and lounge wear as opposed to office wear) and in more subtle ways (choice of colour, pattern, adornment). I wonder if the trends that were raging pre-pandemic for ruffles, flounces and big sleeves are also an issue for retail now. I think some people might find them too festive somehow? Like party wear. Hopefully we’ll find more use for the party wear when the vaccine comes (the roaring 20s came after the 1918 pandemic).

Personally, I’m feeling stompy, practical shoes (no heels), cross body bags, minimal jewellery. I’m still ok with patterns and my colours haven’t changed. And I’m still wearing swishy skirts (waving to Angie).

I suspect retailers will be rolling out more basics/essentials over the next 6 months. I stocked up on forest green and olive green in winter - it was very available here. Hopefully you will find some things that make life a bit easier

I just realized something that should have been totally obvious: the camel over black combo almost replicates my summer look of a sleeveless black outfit! With cognac shoes/boots it's more of a barefoot look. My skin is tonal to camel and cognac but in between.

I've always liked wearing black more in summer, because skin offsets it and it reads as brown, but in winter the black feels more cool toned since I'm all covered up.
Ideally I'd wear dark brown as my main winter neutral, but it's often absent at retail-or not in styles I want.

I get the craving for light neutrals, there is something soothing in a light neutral which I need this year. My wardrobe for the cold season is mainly in black and navy and yet I am constantly wearing the few light neutral pieces that I have! I am planning to sell some dark pieces and replace them with lighter neutral colours.
I once read about decisions fatigue and decided to simplify my wardrobe, switched to dark and neutral undewear, it was one of the best decisions!

Re: wide necklines, I have occasionally solved this problem by layering on a vest. Either an open button or zipper vest, or a sweater vest.

Yes yes yes to this ... I am absolutely feeling the most simple and neutral outdits at the moment. Follow your instincts ... It's a form of self care! But keep the bright and prints stashed away ... I've learned from experience that things can feel very different in the spring! As Angie has taught me, listen to your emotions, allowing that they may change in time. Keep us posted on your new outfits and palette - sounds just beautiful.

Glad it resonates! I'm feeling greens too, forest and olive-they're colors in my eyes so neutral-ish (maybe?). Will write about color in another post cause it'll be long. Not tryinga write a novel in one post :)
The tops in question actually were never worn that much, and just don't look right with a cami- I tried. They just look and feel too bare. It feels hard to get necklines right in cold weather. Too high and I feel like a big block, but too open I feel self conscious. It's easier in summer. The strapless bra stays put but is super uncomfortable

Ease, comfort, and practicality definitely reign supreme right now, and good on you for spending the time to identify specifics around what you want that to look like.

I certainly identify with feeling the desire to put basics on autopilot. I get SO tired of replacing bras, undies, and tees when I cannot exactly replace ones that I constantly use. For me, I think this capsule should be reviewed at least twice a year, or maybe quarterly... I have only been replacing once a year. I have been tracking wears now for more than a year, and it turns out, I have been in a static outfit formula for most of it: dark green top, jeans in a few silhouettes or black joggers, cognac shoe or slipper. I have added a small capsule of "kermit green" this year, which is really just a brighter shade of olive than I normally wear

F/W is usually my favorite time of year for dressing because I can break out jackets and toppers. But, I am not out and about nearly as much as I used to be and I feel ridiculous wearing a structured topper at home.

I must be heavily into self-soothing because wearing a column of color in neutrals has long been my sweet spot for dressing. Like Joy, I'm craving greens. Orange and red-orange sweater dresses are at the cleaners today because I was even unmotivated to wash them. Maybe a long grey cardigan will calm them down.

Stretchy waistbands that don’t look like stretchy waistbands are my new ‘thing’.

Suntiger, LOVE that you are listening to your feelings. Milk it! Soul searching is underrated. Your feelings are shared by many, and they make complete sense. We are all craving what comforts, relaxes and soothes us. Brings us joy and peace in this very, very stressful time. You've found what does - good for you!

I am craving exactly the same things as you - but what satisfies my craving is polar opposite. I need brights, clashing colours, high contrast, boldness, pattern-mixing, sneakers, and a more maximal vibe. And yes, I am WFM. My strategy is energizing, calming and comforting for me. Keeps me positive. Keeps me going.

So while I am wearing bright red, yellow, shocking pink, orange, navy, white and turquoise with dots, stripes and checks - I will happily smile at your soothing-for-you solid black, cognac, toffee, cinnamon and burgundy knowing how well it works at the moment :)

YES TO POCKETS!

That is so interesting about the neckline issue. Did you change the way you mostly wear your hair? Or change size lately? Or just not pay attention to necklines in the past and now feel uncomfortable with previous purchases? It must be really frustrating. I wonder if there's another way to deal with this than scarves or strapless bras.

Your desire for calm neutrals and a simple palette, a uniform of sorts, is -- I'll bet -- widespread right now. Too much going on in the world, no need for extra stimulation at the moment! Black and cognac are a gorgeous combination. Ditto burgundy/ cinnamon.

Fall/Winter is my low energy, but busy at work time of the year. It's always the time I don't want to make decisions, and just keep everything as simple as I can. This year it's extending into what I want to wear.

Though I'm back to office work a few days a week, many of my things feel too bright/too flamboyant/ too loud. Just wrong for this time in society and my life. I feel quiet and don't want to look loud or attract loudness in my life. I'm not wanting brights, most prints, accessories, or anything maximal. Easy on off is good- ideally no buttons, zippers, shoelaces. I'm wanting pockets (as long as they're not obvious from the outside) to minimize carrying stuff- though for work that's unavoidable.
Will write about color in another post, but thought my ideal right now would be a column of black + cognac accessories and camel topper. Or burgundy + cinnamon.

I'd also like to put my basics (except gear) on autopilot. Opaque black high neck tanks, long sleeve ts, leggings or joggers for sleep that I can buy multiples and replace year after year as needed. Consistent black and nude to me bras and knickers same. I don't want to have to start from scratch everytime my nude gets discontinued or they stop making a bra that works.

On that note, I realized some of my winter tops have much wider necklines than I'd like- necesitating a strapless bra. *facepalm* And last year I decided I didn't like how scarves felt on my neck, which was my solution before. I'm trying to get by with what I have, since I don't know what my life/body will look like- but meh.
