Winter dresses are not a big need for me - I think I prefer skirts in the winter with sweaters or layer something sleeveless. Not to say I don't own any, of course .

I didn't add winter dresses this year - I have however added one occasionwear dress and four (ahem) summer dresses and one two piece dress. Two are very casual - almost beach covers.

I did see some good midi dresses and skirts here though...

Yes, like you I have been looking for winter dresses, especially sweater dresses, as I need to retire the ones I have. Too short, wrong colors, flimsy or scratchy fabric, wide necklines. The offerings in all types of clothing seem dominated by cool colors this season.

I have no bandwidth for shopping or time for try-ons (I'm away from home for a week and starting a new job after that), but once things settle down I'm going to need a few more outfits to get me through a 5-day work week... I'm leaning towards dresses and tall boots...

I own 12 dresses altogether and that doesn't include my tunics which are often kind of mini dresses. For someone who doesn't wear dresses much, it seems heaps. Maybe I keep them longer than a lot of people do? They range from oldest 2009 to newest 2 days old ( Bali cobalt maxi dress).

Hmm well I do have some year-round suiting sheath dresses in navy that I got this year. They work well enough in winter with thick tights, a suit blazer for indoors, with a wool coat over the lot for outdoor.
However these are only for work.
As for sweater dresses I’ve always wanted one but never seem to get round to trying them on....

I happily buy and wear fitted sheaths and dresses that are at the knee, so winter dresses are something that I do buy and wear. I did buy these two dresses (in finds) that were longer and have a nice swoosh factor, though they are not particularly warm.

I never fail to be surprised that retail does not provide clothing that women want to wear. Why midi dresses with sleeves in a substantial fabric should be hard to come by is beyond comprehension, especially as retailers are saying that they are doing it tough...

BrieN, you are singing my same sad tune. I am glad I at least found some good casual summer dresses (and have worn the heck out of them). Fall/winter dresses are a whole other story. Casual midi dresses with sleeves (suitable for cooler weather) seem to be a rare thing. Even rarer that they have some shape but are not sweater dresses — because the only thing worse on me than a sweater dress is a shapeless sack dress! LOL I’m astounded by how little creativity designers seem to have in making interesting, casual, flattering dresses.

I feel like I have this problem every year at this time. It seems like most retailers want to make dresses that are for very mild winters, and that just doesn't work for me. I have one sweater dress from Madewell that I bought last winter, and even that one has just elbow-length sleeves, so I have to wear it with a topper.

I'm the Brooklyn/Sarah/Brie gang. I think dresses are wonderful , but so , so difficult to find one that fits well and looks great. For awhile ,I was having good luck with Anthropologie, but it let me down this year (summer too) and there was not a thing I even wanted to try on . BR is usually too oddly fitting and conservative with their dresses for my taste - and I'm too inexperienced with Boden to take the plunge with ordering sight-unseen. I am really enjoying one of "my own" dresses though this fall (from a Canadian line I sell called LNBF). It's a bamboo blend french terry seamed and pocketed knee length dress which fits like a dream, wears like a dream, and is cozy and comfortable. I wear it frequently right now ( I have it in a wine colour, and wear it with black tights, chunky high shaft boots with a 2 inch heel, and a faux fur infinity scarf) and it ticks off all of my boxes It would look pretty great with a cute pair of Western influenced white boots too

I’ll join Sarah and BRieN. I haven’t had much luck with dresses any season. Generally I find dresses are not a good length for me, or not my colours, or not my fabrics. Lately there are some longer dresses around but most are too short waisted for me. Or I don’t like the sleeves. Or the pattern. Big sigh!

I added one dress this winter from Theory. It’s a charcoal grey merino wool sweater dress, midi length, slightly asymmetrical hem swingy skirt, fitted top and long sleeves and interesting spiral efffect seaming. It was perfect for me now because of the length and style which is different from others in my collection. I don’t have a find......

I found one dress at Boden that met my criteria- the Mia Ottoman, which I've worn a bunch of times already. I tried a few others (Laura Ottoman, which looked so similar the Mia, but had a completely different fit through the bust, and the Claudia (neckline didn't work for me, and the length was frumpy), so no luck. Still hoping that COS would come out with something I'd like, but at this point, I'm happy with the three tops I've picked up (one in finds), and am focusing on finding the right lower heeled booties. The tops have opened up possibilities with both jackets/cardigans and trousers that I loved, but were not getting enough wear, so I've been happy about that. Even if I thought I would be focusing on dresses.

I have added only one dress this fall, the Boden Lucille (black bateau neck). I am a very "petite" petite at 4'11", and the Lucille in 10P required two inches off the sleeves and nearly three inches off the hem to fit me like the model. I call this dress "modest witch." I also ordered the Coraline (black v-neck), with the intention of keeping the better one of the two. The v neck on the Coraline was a tad deep for my taste, and the skirt went down to my ankles. I call this one "sexy witch." Coraline on me would have been a maxi, which was not what I was looking for, so back it went.

I ordered the red Claudia but was disappointed with the fit. The shoulders were just too wide for my narrowish shoulders, and so the bodice would have never "sat" right. There was no easy way to fix that issue, so back it went.

Did I need another black dress? No, but I loved the Lucille at first sight and did not care for the other colors. None besides these have moved me...and I admit to feeling a bit down and blah of late, so that is some of it.

You're hitting a sensitive spot with this post. Can Not Find dresses I like that like me back. I have three in my closet, total - for all seasons, and one required major alterations to fit.
Tried the one from Zara this week. What was I thinking/smoking? I had sworn off Zara. Not My retailer. Not cut for me. Their fit model is exactly my opposite (tall, willowy, no boobs). No shaping and not a dart in sight. Wrong. But somehow in a fit of weakness, as I was drawn in to their lovely website and all the fun clothes, I ordered the dress. And it's a disaster on me. Sigh. I'll stop whining now.

Agree that nothing can compare to this year's spring/summer dress season. On the plus side, I have been super happy with the sweater dresses I nabbed at BR (I got pink and navy). So that has been a win.

And as someone else mentioned, what about the Boden Claudia for you, Angie? Is the sizing off? I'm thinking of ordering it in green, if they have a sale for Black Friday. I figure it would be my fall/winter replacement for our fuschia lace dress, which came in so very handy this summer. I can't tell you how many times I was thrilled that I had that dress hanging in my closet! Absolutely brilliant. What a dress season it was.

I just got this dress and wore it once. Love it. Good cut for me. Lined. Nice fabric. City chic is the brand.

So i heard...not that i looked...again...
Can i just wear all the gold, velvet, lace and brocade all winter and skip the less fun stuff? I volunteer to be the dressy stand in for people that dont enjoy dressing up!

Dresses are super hard for me to find, so I haven't noticed much difference between s/s and f/w this year! My cold-weather dress is wearing out (it's jersey, and the spandex is starting to go -- on the back of the shoulders so it's always covered up by a cardi anyway, but still). I'd love to replace it but am not getting my hopes up.

I've been looking at the Boden Winifred dress, too, Suz. Love the print and both colorways. Also the Amber dress, which is a fine-wale cord. Some nice colours and prints and would work for me over leggings or opaque tights. Love the patch pockets! Wish they were long-sleeved instead of three-quarter.

Absolutely agree. Added 5 dresses this summer and had to restrain my self not to get more. And only one this season, after ordering and returning many that I did not like. I got Cora Boden dress in black, which is little boring and predictable but it is very versatile. I can wear it to work and on weekends but also dress it up.

Nope still wearing last years dresses, though two are really more transitional weather ones. I had forgotten about that Boden one though!
All summer i was ignoring all the sleeved dresses, since my climate is too hot and humid for sleeves from May-mid October, and couldnt find sleeveless ones. I wish i had looked closer, but now in mostly pants since its already cold

I've been "off" dresses this past year, not really hunting for them that hard, as I am in a major jeans phase due to the availability of high-waisted jeans. But no, even if I was into dresses right now, I dislike the midi length. It's just not the best length for me. I also dislike turtlenecks or higher necklines.

The only dresses (not counting formal dresses) in rotation at the moment are casual: a grey midi-length V neck sweater dress which looks cute with sneakers OR white booties, but I always feel it could be more flattering at a shorter length. And a casual fleece cowl neck knee-length dress which is super cozy with leggings.

Oh, I do love this, but it's such a statement and what need like is more something I'd wear to work on a normal day. I know if I order it and like it on me I'll find a way to justify keeping it, so I'm sitting on my hands.
