Jenn - Thank you for the kind words. I do love skirts, and I'm excited about getting to enjoy them beyond summer. I do snag stuff I like from the business now and then (that 80s Anne Klein coat!) but am not generally a vintage dresser.

Your "winter luxury" gave me an idea: my daughter gave me a blouse in not-my-usual-green that I keep trying to wear on Christmas (and having a hard time of it). So here's my idea: I can plan my outfit *before* Christmas morning! Brilliant, I know.

LaP -- a "don't need" list is brilliant! Sometimes I'll have a thought like "I'd like a floral cardigan" and eventually I'll get around to buying one. And then I'll buy another. Meanwhile I'm still thinking "I'd like a floral cardigan" and you can see where that can lead.

There's also the fact that some things are easier or more fun to shop for, and those things are a) the first thing you look for and b) what you probably don't need any more of.

Jenn, I've been thinking about fall, but in denial! My blacks and greys are 'at the back of the closet' so to speak, and I've been wearing the heck out of my whites, blush, red, and blues. The next two weeks look to be steady 24-25deg.C and feeling like 30degC+ due to humidity, so I can procrastinate a little longer.

Thanks, LaPed, I think I fixed the link. Yes, they're the slightly tapered loose linen pants from Not Perfect. I'm a little worried about itch too, but I went for it anyway. My neck is pretty intolerant to itchy wool, but my legs seem less sensitive. https://www.etsy.com/listing/2.....e_active_5

Traci, the link isn't working for me but are those the wool-linen pants from Not Perfect? If so, I can't wait to hear your review! I've been thinking about ordering something in the wool-linen blend for almost a year now, but I'm concerned that it might be too itchy for me... love, love, LOVE their 100% linen though.

It's good to know I should feel confident in their functionality if they turn out to fit me well.

LauraG, based on your photos in the floral thread, you wear skirts really well, so that seems like a natural style direction for you...especially in SoCal where that's more possible in winter than in colder, wetter location. Since you sell vintage goods, do you also wear vintage? That might be a fun option for the the tall boots.

dakotacheryl, I'm hoping Eileen Fisher will have something in her fall line. We shall see.

Meredith, your items sounds like solid essentials that I would have in my own wardrobe!

LP, I don't think your list seems terribly long! I love the idea of having a "don't need" list. I bet that really helps to keep you focused.

Angie, I am a planner, for sure! Thinking ahead and analyzing potential purchases extends the "shopper's high" for me, making me less likely to buy willy-nilly just to get that new item pick-me-up. I feel the same way about planning trips. My husband is more spontaneous, so we balance each other out.

I don't do the French 5; although I like the concept, there's something about it that doesn't jive with my shopping style. Instead, I gravitate toward a 3-part list: Don't Need, Need, and Want. Starting out by listing the things I don't need for a given season is super helpful for me, because it serves as a reminder not to buy more of the things that I find fun/easy to shop for (in my case this would be shirts and jackets), and instead focus on the categories that are more challenging for me (footwear and pants). My list for F/W 17 looks like this right now:

Don’t need:

Lightweight jackets/hoodies

Long sleeve shirts

Casual shoes/sneakers

Puffies

Baselayers (camisoles, long johns, etc)

Jeans (already have one pair pre-ordered -- oops -- but they may not work out anyway and are returnable)

Accessories (hats/scarves/gloves etc)

Need:

Neoprene boots (muck boots or bogs)

Want:

Leather ankle boots (black, navy, or pewter)

Cords or heavy weight twill pants

Slim black or charcoal pants

Statement necklace (silver, geometric, 18-20” long)

Sheer black and navy tights

Overalls or coveralls?

The want list seems large, but part of it is work-dependent. If I go back to part-time or substitute teaching, then the ankle boots, sheer tights, and slim pants will move up to the need category. The statement necklace will probably end up being a Christmas gift. I love the idea of a workwear-inspired coverall, jumpsuit, or beefy overalls, but would only buy if the exact right one came along -- hence the question mark. Cotton pants that aren't denim is pretty much a fixture on my wardrobe list -- light ones in the summer, heavy ones in the winter -- as I tend to abuse my pants faster than I can replace them. Also, like you, I find myself gravitating away from tailored pants and wishing for some more slouchy/relaxed, but not sloppy, options.

Always love reading your thought process! We have different approaches but similar goals. I'm about to start shopping for fall, too.

I'd like to replace/add:
Black, silver belts
A "cozy" sweater
Floral top
Stripe top

I'm also on the lookout for:
A structured or semi structured dress
Mid weight jacket
A replacement for a favorite necklace that was misplaced (sob)

I won't settle on those last three items. I don't "need" them for the rest of my wardrobe to function so I'd rather wait for the right thing.

Jenn, you have a great plan going. I was not familiar with the 5-French system. Thank you for sharing it.
FWIW! I have the Sorel boots you posted. They are wonderful winter boots. In addition to the style factor, they are incredibly warm and have an excellent tread for snow and ice. I did size up a 1/2 size because I wear heavy socks with all of my boots. I do not think you need heavy socks for warmth, with this boot, though. IMO these boots are rockstars.

I haven't been here long, but I've already learned a lot from your systematic approach (and Sterling's). I have actually begun to think about winter, such as it is here in SoCal.

Instead of just pants, I want to wear skirts with tights and booties. I've ordered several brands of tights to try out. I'd love to wear tall boots with the longer skirts, but tall boots are scarce these days, especially for 13" calves. Maybe I'll get lucky.

I need third-layer pullover sweaters, short(ish) for skirts and long for pants. After my purge I don't have a single one left.

I have a fabulous red Anne Klein wool swing coat from the 80s. It's too big for me, but it's truly fabulous and my husband loves it. I should make a decision before this winter to either have it altered or sell it.

I enjoyed seeing the scarves many Fabbers bought at NAS. I've never really shopped for them as a planned wardrobe item. This year I want to look for some larger, more substantial squares that will work with my winter wardrobe colors of camel, olive, navy, red, blush and teal.

I could use a casual jacket. Could be leather, but something softer looking than a moto.

Necklaces! The discussion here of necklaces as the third piece was eye-opening for me. I realized I do use necklaces that way, and that many of my outfits require a long necklace. I have two. Now that I see how essential they are, I want a couple more.

More necklaces! I bought what I call a splat necklace--one that covers quite a bit of chest--and discovered it's a very useful wardrobe item. Some of my outfits work with that and nothing else, so more of those, too. (Pictured below.)

Not sure this counts as wardrobe planning, but I have a whole pile of bead necklaces that don't work for me anymore. I'm thinking of taking a beading class to learn to turn them into new jewelry that I'll actually wear.

Probably the most important item is one that doesn't involve money: spend a few hrs in front of the mirror making outfits with all the clothes I just bought. Can't really make full use of them without that step.

God bless anybody who made it this far!

I bought those same Sorels after my snow boots (Sorels with a different sole) tried to kill me. I really like them. I hope they work for you.

A December luxury sounds very intriguing!

What Sal said. I also don't count sleepwear, but my annual numbers are very similar to hers. The number of essentials I buy in any given season can vary, but I try not to go overboard.

Not Jenn, but I find my purchases are 25-30 a year (excluding underwear, socks and hose, and exercise gear - I do one in, one out for this part of my closet).

In the 25 I do include bags and glasses, as well as footwear and all clothing aside from the above. I am a bit vague on the accessories/jewelry.

I have a similar style of Sorels called the Tofino. I normally wear a 7.5 but went with an 8 in those. I have an older pair of Sorels (my shoveling and snow blowing boots) that were true to size. I'm tempted to add a pair if the Joan of Artics as well if I could find the right color.

I think your idea of the 5 piece inspired shopping list is a great way to focus. I originally had a replacement black blazer on my list but I've been debating about going with navy first. I also want to add another pair of skinny wool trousers and a pair of ankle boots.

I count shoes just like everything else! That means most fall within the five, but some that are specifically on my essentials list and under $125 (i.e.: Chuck Taylors) are essentials.

Jenn - how do shoes fit in?

I did my essentials list and discovered everything is black (e.g. Black pencil skirt, black trousers, black silk shell, etc....). I think need to to strategize more color!

Tammyb, yes, I do this twice a year. shedev uses the same system, but does it 4x a year, so you can probably find some of her posts on it, as well.

I don't have a need for suits, or even a large office capsule (I work from home), but if I did, I would make the suits part of my five so I could buy higher quality, and set my price limit for essentials high enough to account for the price of necessary work clothes. I highly recommend doing Angie's exercise of defining your essentials. Otherwise, it's easy to cheat, and just call every random purchase an essential.

Jenn, I want to crawl into your brain! (Not too stalker is he, I hope. ). I LOVE this approach!
Since you do this two times per year, does that mean you only buy 20 items per year?

Do you have a need for pricier items like suits for work? I do, and am wondering how I could adapt your approach for myself. I like suits/work formal, but I wouldn't want them to dominate my buying. I could do with one new suit per year, as long as I buy at least 2 additional jackets and replenish dresses, slacks, etc.

Thanks!

Sterling, I just ordered that cami, as it was on sale. I will report back when it arrives. Our weather here has had highs in the 80s and lows in the 50s, which is about ten degrees cooler than a month ago. So much more bearable, especially with our low humidity.

Joy, I feel like someone else on the forum has (or had) the Sorel boots. Suz, maybe?

Sal, I feel like we're on similar wardrobe paths, with updates around the same size each season. One mistake for the winter isn't terrible at all!

Happy Belated Birthday!

Great planning Jenn. I agree dark florals are easier to find in synthetics (as are most patterns). But you only need one!!

I have also adopted your plan for wardrobe planning

For my fall/winter:

Essentials

Black long sleeve tee

Pink long sleeve tee

Navy long sleeve tee

Black cropped pants (replacement)

Black jacket (thrifted)

Grey wool hoodie

replacement leggings

Statements

Silver shoes

Pink striped sweater

Faux Fur coat (thrifted)

Wine spot dress

Black floral blouse

Mistake

Tweed pullover (still have it but not worn since May) - not a good sign when it is a winter only top and winter is almost over.

Accessories

Toffee bag

Thrifted pendant

Aside from the mistake I am happy with my purchases. I have also added two tees during winter which I will add to my spring/summer list when I start thinking about this.

This is about the level of purchasing I want to do on an ongoing basis - the essentials will fluctuate depending on wear.

Happy (belated) birthday, Jenn! I love and will try to adopt your seasonal 5 plan. This is a great way to add excitement and quality to the wardrobe. If you try the Sorel snow boots, let us know what you think and if true to size. I should get some as I never did find any I really liked last winter but got Vibram sole sneakers instead. I want light faux fur or lining in the boots.

Great read .... as always. I can't even imagine thinking about fall or winter right now. I had to run an errand earlier today and the humidity nearly killed me. I'll have to enjoy reading other's plans for the time being.

I am enamored by your custom find. It is beautiful. I also adore the idea of winter florals. I look forward to seeing what you might find in the stores.
