Since you sell vintage goods, do you also wear vintage? That might be a fun option for the the tall boots. dakotacheryl, I'm hoping Eileen Fisher will have something in her fall line. We shall see. Thinking ahead and analyzing potential purchases extends the "shopper's high" for me, making me less likely to buy willy-nilly just to get that new item pick-me-up. Instead, I gravitate toward a 3-part list: Don't Need, Need, and Want. Starting out by listing the things I don't need for a given season is super helpful for me, because it serves as a reminder not to buy more of the things that I find fun/easy to shop for (in my case this would be shirts and jackets), and instead focus on the categories that are more challenging for me (footwear and pants). My list for F/W 17 looks like this right now: Don’t need: <ul> <li>Lightweight jackets/hoodies</li> <li>Long sleeve shirts</li> <li>Casual shoes/sneakers</li> <li>Puffies</li> <li>Baselayers (camisoles, long johns, etc)</li> <li>Jeans (already have one pair pre-ordered -- oops -- but they may not work out anyway and are returnable)</li> <li>Accessories (hats/scarves/gloves etc)</li> </ul> Need: <ul> <li>Neoprene boots (muck boots or bogs)</li> </ul> Want: <ul> <li>Leather ankle boots (black, navy, or pewter)</li> <li>Cords or heavy weight twill pants</li> <li>Slim black or charcoal pants</li> <li>Statement necklace (silver, geometric, 18-20” long)</li> <li>Sheer black and navy tights</li> <li>Overalls or coveralls?</li> </ul> The want list seems large, but part of it is work-dependent. If I go back to part-time or substitute teaching, then the ankle boots, sheer tights, and slim pants will move up to the need category. The statement necklace will probably end up being a Christmas gift. I love the idea of a workwear-inspired coverall, jumpsuit, or beefy overalls, but would only buy if the exact right one came along -- hence the question mark. Cotton pants that aren't denim is pretty much a fixture on my wardrobe list -- light ones in the summer, heavy ones in the winter -- as I tend to abuse my pants faster than I can replace them. Also, like you, I find myself gravitating away from tailored pants and wishing for some more slouchy/relaxed, but not sloppy, options. In addition to the style factor, they are incredibly warm and have an excellent tread for snow and ice. I did size up a 1/2 size because I wear heavy socks with all of my boots. I highly recommend doing Angie's exercise of defining your essentials. Otherwise, it's easy to cheat, and just call every random purchase an essential.
