Hi Carae, no there is no way to prevent it.

It is just from rubbing - your bag, even when you walk and move your arms and it rubs against the shirt, picking things up. It happens on all kinds of fabrics, but mostly softer knits. Even in high-end cashmere. I would suggest that you store and wash your clothing inside out. Yes, even storage can cause furring because your clothes rub up against other clothes. This is why stores use plastic and tissue paper between fabrics : to avoid furring and wrinkles. ( and never wash lightweight fabrics with jeans or towel - all that rough rubbing makes it worst. )

Finally, I use the fabric shaver and love it. But there is also a stone that is suppose to work well :

You can also use a fabric shaver:
http://www.amazon.com/Remingto.....B00103URIQ

More affordable ones are abound in B&M stores and on the internet.

This happens to some of my things too. I blame it on my bags which are normally quite big and heavy slung over my shoulder. I do not know the answer to prevent it but I do sometimes use an old razor to takes of the bits! you need to be careful though as doing this too often will ruin the fabric.

I've noticed that most of my clothes have furrings are the sides even though I've only worn them once, it makes them look rather worn and old that I don't feel like wearing them again. Are they caused by the friction when canvas(or other) bags rub against the cloth? Cotton materials are most prone to it, woven do better I think.

Is there any good way to remove them? Do better quality materials/clothes not get furrings?
