You know, I see Greg's well-made point about kindness but I didn't see the video as any different from many others similar to the ones Jay Leno used to do where people they stopped in the street didn't know the answer to basic current events or history questions. There are lots of these around making fun of people's ignorance. The people in this one seemed very uncomfortable, whether it could be because they didn't want to seem out of the loop with fashion knowledge or didn't want to ruin the gal's video. I honestly didn't laugh or smile even once while viewing. I thought it was tedious - like I say, there are soooo many of this type of "humor" videos around.

I'm with Greg. Especially because a number of the people did not seem to use English as their primary language. How many of us could be interviewed on the spot in another language, and resist the temptation to bluff a bit when we don't quite understand?

Greg, how true!:-(

(and I didn't even had to listen to this video, as I don't have the good enough hearing nor the best English language skills for fully understanding those puns intended or not, I've just read your comment and understood (+aggreed with it) all).

I watched this video over Angie's shoulder a few minutes ago. It touches a nerve for me.

I think it is unfair to all who participated. The video was almost certainly done under false pretenses. I doubt the participants gave permission for the results to be used in this way.

There were language issues and the questions were completely out of context.

But even if the people heard the question correctly and really didn't know who Kim Jong Un was, or were afraid to admit that they didn't know about the "posing party", does that justify publicly shaming them on the Internet in a way that can never be taken back? Imagine how mortified some of those people feel.

It is also a lie. Do that exercise anywhere, any street corner in the world, and you will be able to cherry pick the answers you need in order to create the impression that people from that place are ignorant, and then laugh at them for it. In their case they are perpetuating a stereotype about "fashionistas".

I really do understand people laughing at it. It is funny. But it is also part of the same cycle of snark and hate that can hit any of us when someone on the Internet catches us at a vulnerable or silly moment and then exploits that for their own laughs.

Except, this is worse. Because MessyNessyChic set out to create those situations and exploit them for their own commercial benefit.

I'll have to say that I think the video exploits language difficulties in some of the cases, but in some it just exposes shallowness and ignorance.
Not saying that that's the rule at all, but it exists.
