I *always* forgot that the reason I'm not wearing one thing or the other because it's not the right season. This has been a cause of needless churn in the past. Really, much better to let those pieces go have a rest in a drawer than to toss the baby out with the bathwater.

Nm - I change how it's all separated all the time ...

Okay wise ones, I've taken your advice and further sub-divided this collection. I was initially hesitant to do so, but as Angie notes, this is probably my most significant category of items because I wear them for such a long portion of the year.

This puts my three-season sweater collection at a downright reasonable 19 pieces, my transitional sweaters at a very reasonable 5 (given I also use t-shirts and blouses more frequently during this weather), and my toppers and light jackets at 7.

Now I actually feel like I could do with a few more three-season sweaters lol! And to Nemos point, these should NOT be navy crewnecks or burgundy v's or gray anything ha! I have a few sweaters that I feel should be workhorses but aren't - might give some thought to replacing these, but going to wait a while and see.

I now have:
- sweaters (fall/winter/spring)

https://youlookfab.com/finds/c.....ction=8103

- sweaters (transitional weather)

https://youlookfab.com/finds/c.....ction=8110

- toppers & light jackets

https://youlookfab.com/finds/c.....ction=8109

I'm still not 100% sure where the cardigans fit; the gray one I only wear in cold winter as it's loose enough to throw over even a sweater; the striped one is only transitional as it's fitted enough it needs to go over a sleeveless top. But for now they can stay with toppers.

Good job! I do this type of capsuling in Finds all the time! It makes me see where my holes and duplications are. That’s why documenting your wardrobe is key. So worth the initial effort.

I don’t think 27 is excessive at all! You wear them 6 to 8 months of the year.

I wear knitwear all the time! Summer too if it’s not a warm day. So I have a LOT. But I don’t wear tees or cardigans. So there is that. I wear pullovers, shirts and blouses. That’s it. Or dresses.

Here is all my knitwear. Some of it is occasion wear. Some of it layering essentials. Some of it holiday. Some of it only for skirts. Many colours and thickness, and levels of warmth. I have a one in one out policy too.

Interesting. Now I would not really categorize pull over sweaters with something like long cardigans that are worn open. On the other hand, shorter cardigans that I almost always wear closed do fit the category. Also v necks, that really require an under layer in the winter, are functionally not the same as crew necks that can stand alone. And very thin sweaters, that I would only wear under something else are not the same as bulkier, stand alone ones. See I cut your sweaters down to much smaller numbers with my keyboard.

I started making collections for capsules with a few categories just starting with what I already had in Finds, and working from memory to add some items that I didn’t already have in Finds. I started with a couple of footwear and jacket/topper categories.

Smart starting with the biggest category! I felt the same way about the numbers the first time I categorized my wardrobe. It really helped me to be more logical about my purchases. In my case, it was t-shirts that I had twenty-some of, and know that convinced me to stop buying them as a default.

Hi friends, inspired by Nemosmom's incredible Finds organization, I'm determined to document my wardrobe, one category at a time. The biggest category I own is definitely sweaters (bigger than I though, as it turns out - I was a bit shocked by the final number of 27!).

https://youlookfab.com/finds/c.....ction=8103

These pieces are all in good repair and sufficiently up to date. The majority of them are good from fall right through the spring, with about 6 of them being 'transitional' sweaters I only wear in late spring/early fall. Still, 21 sweaters seems like more than I'll wear; being a creature of habit I think a two-week supply is plenty. On super-cold days I also bust out my warm hoodies, etc. which I haven't counted here as they are 'gear' in my mind.

So, from this I can say:

probably need to move towards a 'one in one out' strategy for sweaters as I buy additional pieces (which I really don't need to do soon!)

if I put something on and it doesn't feel good (more than once, let's say - allowing for off days!), I can probably pass items along while they are still in good shape and current for someone else to use. The Uniqlo white turtleneck is currently next on the chopping block - I'm glad I tried it and WANT to like it, but I'm still not feeling it and think a darker colour would have been a better choice for this piece.

there is a lot of repetition in this collection, which is fine, but I think I can stay open to different-looking pieces, particularly varied neutrals and deep tones in different styles, textures or patterns might be good to consider going forward.

So Phase 1 is complete - next to be tackled - pants - a much smaller job! I'll try to get to it later in the week.
