I gotta say, I don't really have muses either. I see a lot of outfits I like, and can think of certain celebs who serve as good touchstones or reference points for my style, but I don't really feel any compulsion to replicate specific looks. What I actually wear is too tempered by actually daily life needs to try to "channel" someone else.

If this allows you to incorporate various elements into your style more comfortably, then yay for that! I like how she does it on the Blue Collar Red Lipstick blog, too.

For myself, I tend to be more like Jenn -- I want to integrate everything. Plus, I don't have muses, which I guess is weird. Well, maybe Angie. And Annie Lennox. But.

Love these, they are perfect for you. I'd love to do it myself but am feeling a lack of creativity. I'll have to look someplace for inspiration. Can't wait to see everyone's own interpretations.

Jenni lol!! Nope but I'll do the hoop earrings :D

Celia, yes - the more I'm exploring it, the more I think the avatars are all variations on 'the traditionalist', which is my primary/natural style direction, circumstances aside - the cali-wannabe is a more relaxed version, the minimalist more stark, the mom next door more colourful and pretty. The suburban one is really just functionality so I'm not sure it even deserves an avatar.

One thing I notice though, is that in your outfits you wear the clothes and not the other way around.
This is one of the nicest compliments I've ever received, so thank you very much xoxo

This was such an interesting and fun read Torontogirl. I feel very tempted to do this exercise myself.
For what is worth I can see how the different avatars can coexist because they have a common thread of 'effortlessness' for lack of better word(and I hope this is a word).
It also makes sense that you use different avatars for different situations as we all try to convey different things in different settings.
One thing I notice though, is that in your outfits you wear the clothes and not the other way around.

These are great and I can see them in your style. Although they are different there is an overarching consistency between them. I like how you’ve even thought about when you tend to adopt them.

Like Angie I don’t have any fashion muses. Lots of people whose style I admire but no one that I want to emulate. I like thinking of the different aspects of my style in terms of moods or themes, rather than personalities or avatars, that seems to suit me better. I still have my 3 themes - Byzantine jewel, Funkytown and Dark Passage. Lately I’ve been thinking about adding another theme - Vintage Bohemian. Probably a development of the Funkytown theme. I like 70s! This helps me to reign in my eclectic tendencies and assists with both purchasing decisions and outfit creation.

Agreed, Helena - I think for most of us, we have lots of elements that overlap, but one outfit doesn’t necessarily feel right in another setting, even if it uses some of the same pieces. With Avatars, I can decide who I want to be in each setting, and then decide which kind of outfits correspond to which avatar. So The Prince and The Sophisticate for me have many overlapping pieces, but how I put them together is very different.

Rachy, the more I think about it, the more I think this is why this is helpful - if my different style variations were very different, it would be less confusing ... Say if I was super-sharp corporate titan at work, and then uber-zen-yoga-lady on the weekend, it would be clear what was for what, what went with what, etc.

I just KNEW you would love this asMuch as I did with our overthinking (I mean analytical) tendencies Shout out to @SarahD8 for introducing me to the blog

I really love this construct because it slowed me to explored different facets of my fashion personality without feeling like I was making a ‘mistake’ or being ‘untrue’ To one chosen theme. I like change and options, after all! Also there is a cohesive thread through all of them.

How I found this helpful - when weeding through my closet, if a particular piece called to me but didn’t fit in the avatars, then out it went (or - I reconsidered how it would fit in my avatars. My love For handmade scarves Made lead me to Developing my Artist personality so I could find ways to wear them more.)

Outfit creation also became easier because I knew what I wanted to project in each situation - Prince outfits for work in winter, sophisticate outfits for work in summer, Artist outfits for fancy nights out or if I was feeling particularly sassy. And if I leaned into one avatar in one season, I could lean back the other way next season and not feel that I was being untrue to myself.

I still need a weekend one like your suburbanite. Adina’s avatar that she uses most for weekends seems to be The Adventurer, but I haven’t quite nailed what mine is yet. Yoga teacher off duty?

Sarah, yes, I agree - I think the cardi thing is a natural fit into the Mom Next Door ... and over a colour of dark, is readily convertible into and Urban Minimalist if I need to keep my options open! It may also make a practical Suburbanite outfit a little prettier and more flattering ...?

Depending on the colour, it could also work with the Cali-wannabe/Ease persona ... so lots of versatility there I think!

What a great exercise, torontogirl, and well executed!

This approach seems like a great way of organizing your hankering for certain wild-cards -- they just need to fit within ONE avatar, then you can be more confident that they have a place in your closet.

I think a key insight here is recognizing that you want to wear things in specific contexts. No sense buying a bright jewel-toned blouse for lunch with your MIL. But no need to limit your gym/grocery/cleaning loop wardrobe to dark neutrals.

My question is where your recent insight about wearing a colorful sweater/cardi at home and then removing it when you put on outerwear to go out fits in. That seemed like such a great approach! Would hate to see that get lost in the shuffle. Maybe it's part of the Mom Next Door avatar? Hallmark Heroine in Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood?

LaPed, your avatars are perfect - perhaps not your Facebook one, but the others I love changing the outfits on my Bitmoji ... am I 45 or 12? Hard to tell sometimes ... :D

Angie, not strange at all - you are more of an outfit artist, so it makes sense that you would have a solid understanding of the principles, which you then apply in your own completely unique way ... I, on the other hand, am more suited to paint by numbers, hence the need for guidelines and templates!

I'm fully supportive of having fun with this process and its helpful results!

Soooooo......I don't have fashion muses. Is that weird and ridiculous? I love looking at what Audrey and Grace wore, what anybody wore in the '80s, the street style in HK and Japan makes me giddy, and there are celebs like Ellen de Generes and Helen Mirren who I think have an incredible sense of style. But I don't want to emulate any of it!

Or maybe....I simply need more tea....

Haha, yes, the Suburbanite is the Hallmark lady on grocery day Going to read your post about it now!

ETA: Roxanna had this gem on Nemosmom's thread, in terms of how to actually apply this stuff in a practical way:

I love the idea of personas for different occasions to delineate where and how you might embody the look. I use my moniker, Urban Luxe, more as a style filter than an overall persona. Every item I buy must fit into my definition of urban, and my definition of luxe. I then must be able to use it in one (or all three!) of my personas. And as Brooklyn said, it's often the way I put the items together than brings the look to life.

Yep! I went through this exercise last year! I started with 3: one warm weather, one cold weather, one special occasion - all under the umbrella of my "Refined Californian" moniker. I definitely find them really helpful for guiding what I buy and what I edit out. It helps me see when my California side starts to slide too far into 'seasonally confused hippie' ;)

I giggled at your Suburbanite one! She can borrow the Starbucks cup from your Hallmark movie avatar All of these are great representations of how you live your life and absolutely fitting. I am excited to see how you work with them all!

Yes, Jenn - even if they end up in a stew as worn, I think it will help to tease them apart at least in theory.

I hate PSLs, but other than that, if the shoe fits *shrug*
