Never seen that before ... I agree that it could be cool for a vintage librarian type vibe!

I like it too, but I do not like my shirts buttoned up to the top. I like more unusual accessories though.

I really like the look and would consider wearing it myself if I wore collars. I think it has a sort of edgy Victorian vibe. If you like it, why not try it!

To me, they have a distinct look that serves certain styles — retro, buttoned-up preppy, quirky/eclectic... I say if it appeals to you, try one out. I’m not a huge fan of buttoning shirts all the way up *for my personal style* so I doubt I’d ever wear one, but I can see how it might work well for a different style. I can’t say I’ve seen one in the wild for decades.

Thanks all for the encouragement!
I've not heard of cardigan clips to this day, though they sound like something this character would wear as well.
@Rachylou: no idea, I wouldn't wear with a soft collar myself and haven't suite figured out how they attach yet.
@Katarina: the look you describe sounds heavenly, but alas a full suit is too formal for all aspects of my life now. Would love to see you rock that though.
@jessikams: you are right about that, accessories languishing. I wouldn't spend too much on such a thing though, but in all honesty I still need to find that perfect white shirt first!

I think it’s a great idea. In my own life, I find that I don’t tend to remember these kinds of “extras” and they languish in a drawer. But if you think you would use it- in lieu of a necklace, say— go for it! Have you tried soft neckties too?

I think they look like fun. As Joy mentioned, they remind me of cardigan clips that many girls wore back in the 50s. I have one that my grandmother gave to me. It has blue butterfly clasps and pearls instead of a chain. I only ever wore it once.

I like it. New to me, I have never seen it on anyone before. I think it will make a great accessory to a classic white shirt, dressy pants and oxfords, as you describe it. I don’t see it like costumey, as it is quite subtle. Yet interesting and unusual. Rather a retro detail, which I personally am very fond of.
I could also picture it on a white shirt combined with a modern dark suit (menswear inspired longer blazer) and a satchel with metallic hardware. Like an interesting detail in a minimalist outfit.

These remind me of cardigan clips that were very popular in the 50’s. They held a cardigan on if you just wore it over your shoulders. Someone gave me a pair as a birthday party present that were shaped like cat heads.

I had a cardigan chain (that ClaraT mentioned above) in the 90s that I used to love wearing. I think a collar chain could be really interesting with your described outfit!

I like it! It would suit you very well. The one you posted has a bit of an 80’s vibe—fun.
I would not wear this because I always leave my shirt collar unbuttoned.

I've never worn one and don't foresee the likelihood but while it might be without context and even a little eccentric on me, I think it would merge so well with your style that it would just provide a little polish and shine. Great finishing touch.

Accessories are so personal. It's impossible to critique them on anyone else- well, out loud, anyways - because we all have our own ideas about what looks good . I can't say I've ever seen anyone wearing one, but could imagine it on someone who favours a vintage-y costume-y look.

I love this, though it’s not my style. I like that it’s sort of feminine/masculine: a delicate chain (feminine) but worn on a buttoned-all-the-way-up shirt (more masculine). Very striking, yet not exactly flashy. The link to the Glee character reminded me that there is such a thing as a cardigan chain—love those too!

So I’ve started watching Glee and I noticed this character Emma Pillsbury wearing something I understand is called a collar chain. Though I don’t relate to her preppy librarian style, I thought the idea of such a collar chain was very appealing. Etsy seems to sell some, and it’s clearly an item not very common in regular retail. I have also never seen one irl being worn. What do you think? Have you ever worn a collar chain? Are you drawn to it, repulsed by it or left completely neutral? Would it work with my forties tomboy outfits (worn with a white shirt, dress pants and oxfords) or push them into costume territory?

Here’s the character from Glee if you don’t know it. And a picture of a style I’d like (in silver): definitely more of a stylized version.
