Oh, those Rockport Ainlys are the best. Tara, you really won brownie points when you recommended them to me.

I actually don't think that your Fryes looked funny on your foot, but for the cost I think they do need to be something that you will love. Mine are tight when I'm trying to slide my foot in, but the ankle is still pretty roomy once they are in all the way. The only thing is that the front & back part of the shaft isn't as soft and collapsible as the top part due to the seam, so I pull the folds of the boot around a bit until I like the way that they fall. The front view on one foot in this picture pretty accurately shows how they look.

They are definitely stretching out a bit with each wear, and my mom suggested wrapping a plastic bag around my foot when I'm sliding them in to minimize the friction - that helped quite a bit, particularly with jeans.

I think your calves must be smaller than mine - there is no way, even with tights on, that I could pull them all the way up!

Kari - interesting about the ankle fit. I love those boots on you.

The reason I sent my Rorys back was the ankle was very fitted on me, and the slouchy part seemed to accentuate it even more. You don't have a photo of you in the boots straight on, so I can't see if it's doing the same thing on you, but it doesn't look like it is.

I really loved those boots - the leather is awesome - but I just didn't like the way they looked. Even though I'm wearing jeans, I think you can see what I'm talking about in the picture.

Surprisingly, I actually was able to pull the boots up all the way over tights but not jeans (it was pretty tight, though - not an eight of an inch to spare, and a struggle to get them off.) I thought they looked very sleek that way (at the top) but the ankle thing still bugged me! I decided for the price (full price when I tried them) it was too much not to love them 100%.

I was tempted to reorder now that they're on sale on 6pm, but I think they just are not meant to be for me. I think I need boots that are stiffer, like the Rockports - which give a straighter line. I've got the Lyme Grass from Clark's coming soon, so hopefully those will work out!

Such a bummer. (But you still have your non-OTK Stuart Weitzmans, right?)
That's a good point. Though my feet are not the pickiest, blistering and chafing around the back of my ankle tends to be my biggest problem area.

The ankles are always baggy on me too Kari. After my experience with the Stuart Weitzman boots, though, I can be at peace with that. Baggy ankles let my foot flex normally. Sleek, snug ankles result in chafing

It's so funny. I never thought of the top part of my foot as being as tough to fit as my calf size. Maya, the other weird thing is that though my foot fills out my boots fine, the ankles are ALWAYS big and baggy, even on my best fitting boots. In a way the slouchy boots are a relief because the ankle is supposed to wrinkle!

Kari, you would love the fit of my Via Spiga boots. The instep is so high it's actually rather awkward on me. There is nothing to fill out all that space so the material kind of collapses if I bend my foot a certain way.

I guess you can't please everyone huh?

Glad you're keeping the Rory boots though. They're super on you.

Okay, I am definitely keeping them. I wore them around all day, and they are incredibly comfortable, and they are getting easier to slip on. How much I love them, plus Maya's point about boot season being year-round in Seattle, and also the 50% price makes it pretty hard to think about sending them back.

I never thought I'd say this, but I am a Frye girl!

I also just picked up the Nine West Cleeos in a pretty red chestnut color, which are also quite comfortable, though interestingly I have the exact same problem with my instep being too high/large and making it difficult to initially pull on the boots. I've never run into this issue before. So strange.

It seems you have your answer! The leather on those boots is outrageous, isn't it? And what a deal.

I'm quite impressed with this color. I've been trying to figure out how to wear a lighter color boot with my dark hair, but it never feels right on me. Maybe I just need to adjust my eye for myself - I love this color on you!

Kari, I'm surprised to hear that you have managed to get by spending what you have on boots! $160 is positively a bargain for me...and for a pair of Fryes?! Shut UP! That's a steal.

If I spent any less, I would never find boots that worked. You live in Seattle, where it is boot weather for nearly 4 seasons. I wouldn't blame you for spending twice as much on killer boots. By contrast, I only get boot weather for maybe six months, and I spend way more than you. Of course, this could just be because I am more irresponsible

Laura, thanks for the idea. However, even sizing down half a size, the boots are larger on me than most of my other shoes. I'm afraid that if I sized up they would be uncomfortably large, and I don't think that the difference in the shaft would be that drastic. The fit on the boots is just going to be what it is, and I just have to make the decision about whether I can live with the difficulty in pulling them on. Unfortunately, though I've tried to search for alternative scrunch boots, I really have not found any better options.

MPJ, I appreciate the thought! The red pair is way out of budget for me, even on sale - the sale on 6 PM brought the price down to the $160-ish range rather than in the $260s, and $160 is still dramatically more expensive than what I've paid for another boot, or any shoe save the Fidjis that I now own. I hope that someone else will be able to take advantage of the Zappos sale, though! I'm happy with the color I ended up with, but would probably have tried red if it had been available in my size just to be a bit different.

Kari, these boots are incredibly fab. Keep, keep, keep! I was going to suggest ordering them in a half size up (while keeping this pair) for comparison. I hate squeezing into boots, want to be able to comfortably wear a sock in them, and I like when there is room around my calves when slouching. It might be worth a try if you are still wondering about fit. They are gorgeous!

That's great, Una. I'm glad that the comfort factor holds up!

Jenava, I'm glad that the color strikes you as one that would work with my wardrobe - yay!

At this point, I've taken them off and put them on about 10 times tonight, and the back of the boot is stretching enough that it is easier & less uncomfortable to scoot my foot in. Still probably not shoes that I would wear when I know I am going to change in and out of shoes at the gym, but I can probably whittle it down to 2 or 3 minutes to put my boots in - just a touch longer than it takes to zip boots over skinny jeans without catching fabric in the zip.

Kari, I love them. Fryes are so well made, and these are a great color for your wardrobe. I think they add a nice new dimension to your footwear choices, too. I think you'll have a lot of fun mixing them up into outfits!

Kari, I've gotten better at maneuvering into them, or my foot has gotten more flexible. But I did read several reviews complaining about this exact issue. I have basically square feet (size 5 double-wide!), with really high arches. Once you get used to putting them on, I think you'll find them incredibly comfy and definitely 8 hour shoes (unless it's 8 hours of hard walking!)...

Re: color - I can't tell if there is a lighter cognac. Mine are brown and they are quite dark, almost chocolate. I am desperate for cognac boots that fit my calf! The Rorys stay up on me unless I shove them down, so if there is a cognac I might cave.

How funny - Una, I wonder if it is due to you and me having a higher instep, and another idea is that my foot is longer (size 8 or 8.5), whereas Angie has a much smaller (size 6.5 or 7) foot. So the length on my foot would be proportionally much larger than the ankle than on a smaller size.

Either way, I've taken them on and off a few times and they do seem to stretch a little bit. Unlike Una, I really can't use the tabs to pull them on since they tend to bunch up lower on the foot, so I try to massage them until my heel slips in.

I think it's all going to come down to the comfort factor (they must be 8 hour shoes!) and whether the leather stretches out enough to warrant keeping them. I don't really fancy jumping around and grimacing every time I want to take them on and off!

I think I have the same color (sand) that Sandy got, which is a bit ligher than Angie's boots.

Angie, what color are you duplicating your boots in? Black? If I could have, I would have got these in the pretty red color.

KILLER.I *am* biased.

I think mine are a different colour, Kari. I tried those on as well - 18 months ago and it was a toss up! I am doubling up on the Rorys because they are wardrobe workhorses and 10 hour shoes. I can walk NYC and HK flat in these - a priceless pair of boots.

Mine slip on and off like butter. I guess I don't have a high in step? They are also very, very worn in
