Wow San, what a useful summary! I've been in love with the Fionas for a while. They're the perfect shaft height, perfect diameter, perfectly fab. The only thing that's not perfect is that they're not in my budget right now. :O

I have the Rider pull-ons and I love them. I do know what you mean by smell, though. To my nose it's just a very strong leather smell that reminds me of saddle leather. I love the smell, but it definitely could be toned down a little. I think with more wear it will.

Sandy, thanks so much for writing about your experience with all the styles. This is invaluable information, and I really appreciate you taking the time. This gives me a lot of food for thought. Your Sandra description is funny!
Cathy, I was wondering more about the leather soles. I typically avoid buying shoes with leather soles because of the weather resistance, and I could be wrong about that. I used to have a pair of leather-soled boots, and the cobbler insisted that I put a layer of rubber over to protect them. But these could be different.

I put boot grease on my Fryes but they don't soak it up because they don't need it. They must have been treated already in the shop!
I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the summary Cathy. Perhaps you want to add some info about your Frye boots, and/or your try-ons?

san, that was an excellent, comprehensive summary about Frye boots! Thanks so much.

marianne -- I haven't treated my boots with anything, except for the lighter-colored Carson I sprayed with Kiwi Protect-All. I like how they are getting a distressed look. They've been fine in the rain.

http://www.thefryecompany.com/.....63BOR.aspx
My Dorados were here but I had to send them back because the boots didn't match each other. These are great boots. The leather is very thick and they are lined. They have a nice shaped toe, not too round and not to pointy. They come up high on my leg to my knee, and have a fairly thick sole.
http://www.thefryecompany.com/.....96BLK.aspx
The Jane Tall Cuff is so pretty, I had to get them in black and in taupe. When you unfold the cuff they hit above my knee. Cuff turned down they hit just below my knee however they are starting to scrunch just a bit. They have very thick and lined leather. Because they are quite wide in the shaft they look great over jeans. I think they might be too chunky around the shaft to wear with a dress, but I haven't tried it so it may work. Never say never!
http://www.thefryecompany.com/.....16CLA.aspx
I had the Billy Short here briefly but they ran small and I couldn't get them on.
As far as sizing goes the Frye gals said they tell people to start with their regular size. There are a few that are just big boots like the Elizabeth and the Sandra, which are really tall, and really big around in the shaft, and they run big in the foot.
http://www.thefryecompany.com/.....25DBN.aspx
We all know the Rory Scrunch. These boots are quite yummy. They are a great fit in the boot just like the Jane's. The heel is no problem at all for me who cannot walk in high heels. You should expect the shaft to scrunch because they are made for it. The leather in the shaft has no back bone. They fall over, and they scrunch down.
http://www.thefryecompany.com/.....61BLK.aspx
These are fun boots and feel great on the foot, also fun to walk in as they give you a bit of cowgirl swagger, I think it is due to the heel hieght or shape. These run large so I would size down either a full or half size depending on the socks you want to wear with them.
http://www.thefryecompany.com/.....35BLK.aspx
I had these in the cranberry color for a while to try them in the house. I thought we were a match but something was off for me and I finally realized that I like the riding boots but this one has a very round toe, slim sole, and thick at the ankle. They are quite high to the knee. They are nice thick leather.
http://www.thefryecompany.com/.....94CRA.aspx
The Veronica Souch is very nice. It didn't seem to be what I was looking for when I tried them out, I think that I was just into a different style at the time and I may give these a try again.
http://www.thefryecompany.com/.....91CAM.aspx
The Sandra boot felt like a big serious boot. I was totally overwhelmed by these boots. I felt like I wouldn't want to meet the woman wearing these boots in a dark alley because I would probably get my a** kicked! PS I don't even hang out in dark allies.
http://www.thefryecompany.com/.....70BCK.aspx
I wish I could wear such a beautiful boot as the Fiona but I can't walk gracefully in these heels.
http://www.thefryecompany.com/.....31TAN.aspx
Julia, again so pretty, too high for me.
http://www.thefryecompany.com/.....03CRA.aspx
I think that is all i have tried or bought, and there are so many more to try or buy.
All I can say is I was never interested in boots until my cowboy Dad passed away last Oct and now I feel a connection to him when I wear cowgirl boots. I gave another brand a try in the really fancy dudded up boots with the pointy toe but they were not me, nor did my Dad ever wear fancy cowboy boots, just simple but strong boots.
Tam, I have not tried the Melissa Button yet but it is on my list for next.
Does anyone else have anything to add?

http://www1.bloomingdales.com/.....2013800953

Our Jean found these Frye's on sale at Bloomindales. They seem to be putting more of them on sale all the time as summer approaches.

Here are some boots that I've had personal experience with.
http://www.thefryecompany.com/.....63TAN.aspx
The Rider Pull On is quite plain and light weight, not lined. Frye had it on their site front page, on a model with a cute little dress on. I ordered the taupe and had them for a month. They had a smell to them that would not go away and I gagged everytime I went near them. I sent them back as a damaged product and am waiting Frye's response. I think it is something they used to treat the leather, and this is my only pair of unlined boots.
http://www.thefryecompany.com/.....02EME.aspx
The Carson in the Emerald green just like in the picture. I LOVE this boot. It is easy to get on and off, light weight, looks great, and I love the dark green color.
http://www.thefryecompany.com/.....72NAT.aspx
I had this boot here for a trial and I sent it back because I thought it was to much like the Rider Pull On, however I may order it back sence the Rider didn't work out for me, because this boot is beautiful. It has a texture but it is not really snakeskin, or lizzard. This light color is gorgeous for summer and they are as comfortable and have all the good attributes of all the Carson boots.
Sorry I hit the submit button accidently. I'm not quite finished so I will continue on on the next page.
PS Please note on the Frye site that Carsons come in several shaft hieghts. My dark green are very tall.

San have you tried on those Melissa button riding boots? Please do post a review if you have!!!

I am stalking them online and currently putting aside $50 per paycheck so that I can buy them and not feel toooooo indulgent. So far I've got $200

I am a bit worried about sizing though, since I've never tried any Fryes on. If you've tried them on, do you think they run true to size?

Thanks ladies! Wow Sandy, that is great information, thank you very much. I browsed through the styles for a while, and I actually like Paige boots. The reviews are kind of mixed about the shaft circumference, how were they? It also bothers me that the reviews say about the sole being too thin, and it sounds like it was your experience, too. I actually like the brown color in those.
The Dorados look very nice, but they are even more expensive and a little too equestrian. I do like Jane style too, although I would probably be better off with a lower heel.
Kristen, I was curious, was there any style that came close for you? Somehow I feel like your style is more dressy or refined but it could be a fun contrast with engineer style maybe.
Another question - did you guys do anything special with the leather sole to protect it from the rain?
Anyway, thanks for all the information! I'll be watching the sales and will try to make it to the store and try them on.

san -- yes, my spring ones are perforated Frye Carson in buttermilk. The most "cowgirlish" of the Fryes I own, but not too much so.

julijuli -- I'm not san, but I'm pretty certain that Angie's boots are the Frye Rory scrunch. They do come in dark brown and are currently on sale at Endless (and of course at Amazon too):
http://www.endless.com/FRYE-Wo.....rye%20rory

Bing cashback is at 20% right now, so if you order through Endless I think it ends up cheaper than going through Amazon, if you're willing to wait for the cashback. Also, you have the option of free returns through Endless.

Marianne -- FYI, I've found that Frye boots are not generally meant for a tight fit around the calf, particularly if you have calves less than 14" around (which you and I do).

San - since you are the Frye expert I'm curious. Are the carmel colored scrunchy boots Angie is wearing in her Europe photos Fryes? I really like that look and I'm wondering if that style comes in a dark brown color. I didn't see any that looked like on the site but maybe I missed them.

Oh yes I remember meeting you at the YLF dinner. That was so much fun.

If you want a heel that is very comfortable and walkable, anything in the Jane group has the same shoe part, different shaft style. The Rory Scrunch boots also have the same shoe part as the Jane boots, different shaft. By that I mean the same sole and heel shape and size, so the boot will feel the same on your foot. When you go to the styles that have a taller heel, like the Julia and Fiona, they are getting into high heel territory and not comfortable to me, but oh so pretty.

I really love the Melissa button boot. On the website they describe it as a vintage looking riding boot. I think I am going to try those next. I love the look and the colors.

I like Cathy's new spring boots with the perforated shaft. I think they are Carson's in buttermilk color. Please correct me if needed Cathy. All Carsons have the same shoe part to them so the Carson shorties will have the same boot fit as the Carson pull ons, and the fit is great. They are low heel, comfortable and not to cow girl, just a little.

I'd watch to make sure the boot you order has a thick enough sole. Some Frye Riding boots, like the Shirley, have a thin sole and very low heel and I didn't like the feel of those. The Dorado Riding boot is great with very thick leather and a good boot shape, and thicker sole. I had the Paige Tall Riding boot to try out for a while but they have a very round toe and very flat heel, so I decided they were not really my type. To see how round a toe is you can flip over to Zappos where they show you the boot from the bottom and all around the boot.

http://www.thefryecompany.com/women-boots.aspx
You can open this link and click the tab to show ALL the styles on one page. Just look at them and compare and take your time. Eventually you will zero in on a few that you know are what you are looking for. Call the phone number and ask many questions. I have done this a few times and they love to help as much as they can. Many of the gals there have a closet full of Fryes. I learned from them to look at the styles, as style groups, and I wish they would organize the boots in order like that, but you can learn to see the similarities in name and fit style.

I'm also very interested in the Samantha Woven right now. There is a Shirley Studded Hurache boot too, which is a bit more casual and scrunchy, but the gal I talked with told me they are beautiful. Again they are "Shirley's" and have a thin sole, to me. I think I like the look of the Samantha.

Some people love all of the campus and engineer styles. I guess I am too old and missed those styles in my youth, so I focus on what speaks to me, and it takes time, but it's fun. Enjoy! If you do not wear your boots outside untill you are sure you want to keep them, the return and exchange policy is good.

Sorry this is getting to be a book, but I forgot to mention color, so many great colors, and the "fawn" is gorgeous.

I went on a Frye hunt earlier this spring but did not find the pair that spoke to me. I preferred to try on all the different styles and sizes in stores rather than online, although I did have a couple of pairs shipped from Zappos that I shipped back.

Fryes are perennial classics, so my hunt continues on. I am thinking it will probably be next fall's choices where I find the right one for me.

Thanks Jean! My lifestyle is quite casual. Would you say Veronicas fall under rugged category? I am with you on the expense, so I would rather get a style that lasts.
As for color, I am not sure. Probably something neutral and not too light. I wear a lot of grey, blue and black, so I suppose I could go for a shade of brown. Hmmm. I am going to do more extensive research tonight.

I am a huge Frye fan. I like the rugged and classic looks, mainly because they are such an investment and I would not buy a trendy style. It depends on lifestyle. Are you interested in a signature color?

Thanks Maya, Cathy and Sandy. Cathy, thanks for the picture, my calves are also 13'' but I am taller, and they would hit me at a different spot. They indeed don't seem too slouchy - I was afraid they might be like Angie's chestnut boots. I guess the enxt step would be to try them on :)
Sandy, I am probably half an inch shorter than you, you've seen me at the YLF dinner. I think riding or engineer, but not cowgirl, and I am not sure about color at this point. Which models have you tried? I think I've seen your pictures in at least 6 different pairs - I didn't keep track but they all looked fab.

I do know alot about Frye boots right now! HaHa! I even just received a present from them for being such a good customer, a logo T shirt and a can of boot grease!
I'd be happy to answer any questions for you. The gals who answer the phone on the Frye website are also so nice and will describe the leather and what the different boots are like.
You can PM me here if you want to take it private or we can talk here if you think others are also interested.
I love to talk about Frye boots.
I just re read your post and now I'd like to ask what kind of boots do you like, riding boots, cowgirl boots, engineer boots? That would be a good place to start. Also what color are you considering? How tall are you, and do you have average calves of 14 or so inches?

Good memory, Maya! I do have the Veronica slouch boots, and they are my favorite Fryes. I've had them for almost 2 years. They aren't too slouchy--definitely not a scrunch boot. But they aren't calf hugging either. Here's a picture of them when they were a few months old:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com.....8cc7_o.jpg

Note that I am short (5'3") with 13" calves. You might find the boots too short for you if you are looking for one that hits near your knees.

As far as sizing goes, I'm normally a 7.5 and I got an 8. I wear them with thick socks. I think I could get away with 7.5 with thin socks, but they might be hard to get the foot in at first before they break in.

Here is Angie's store review and she says they are good for narrow calves because they slouch. Like you, I don't like *too* much slouch so I guess you will need to try them on. I think Cathy either has them or tried them and loves them (correct me if I'm wrong, Cathy).

After snoozing through the Frye discussions, I am now considering splurging on a pair, or at least looking for them on sale. What style would be the best for everyday wear? I prefer taller boots and I am considering Veronicas, but I am not sure if they slouch too much - I saw them at the store and the leather feels very supple. Would they work for a taller person with skinny calves? Any tips on sizing?
(waving at Sandy the Frye queen)
Thanks!
