Gap has a few styles that may work for you. Although they have side pockets, they aren't the angled ones that seem so problematic for hourglass shapes.

Try the Karen Kane ones in the store. I have them in black and love them.

I actually just recently found a pair that I like at Kohl's- they are Lee brand and have a wide, elasticised waistband (but it doesn't look like it's elastic- it isn't bunchy or anything). They also don't have front pockets, which I really like. Here is a picture of them.

Well those are awesome shorts, but I agree it is a bit much for a pair of cut offs.
Try Target, they have about a million pairs of denim and non-denim shorts now.
You can order online with free shipping and just return what doesn't fit in the store.

How about Target? I bought some Merona bermudas there last week. They come in different cuts for different body types. The pair I bought had nice fabric, cotton with some stretch and sheen.

I am looking for a couple pairs of shorts - above the knee (but not short shorts!), no pleating, no drawstring tie (please!), preferably not denim and no gaping pockets...something that will accomodate a curvy seat and hips.

I struck out _big_ time at the mall today...can anyone point me in the right direction?

ETA - just to elaborate on my frustration...I saw a LOT of drawstrings...I am not a tucker, and the whole detail is lost on me, other than that I have a knobby knot/bow making my shirt stick out in front...so many shorts seem cut for those with no hips - so if you are curvy with a bum, the pair feels tight through the hips and crotch and gaps at the waist. Anything that wasn't denim looked cooler (temp wise) but rumpled and sloppy...the things that weren't rumpled and sloppy had extremely high rises, were made out of soul-sucking beige and had a frump factor of 10. Obviously people are finding shorts...where's the pair for me?? :(

I love the slouchy look of these (yes, they are denim) but not the price tag:
