I second Shedev's suggestion, my shopping frustrations have gone away thanks to YLF-vetted items. I ended up buying a lot of things that I would not have seen in stores (many were online purchases). I just have to resign myself to the fact that many of these will have to be returned but seeing clothing on other people with similar body type or style preferences is extremely helpful.

Congratulations on not settling! I never go to a store actually expecting to find something, LOL. I also like to review a store's offerings online before I go in and sometimes have a few items in mind that I want to check out in person.

I hear your frustration on tops. I think it may be due in part to manufacturers moving away from numbered sizes to XS-S-M-L-XL. I am often between an XS and S, with the S's shoulders and neckline being a bit too big to be flattering.

Thanks everyone for great advice! I will check the posts you mentioned and look at the WIW. I think I will refocus on fall and leave my summer frustrations for now. It can't stay this warm much longer!

Have you tried Polyvore.com? I get a lot of ideas from there, not only from other members but also from making my own creations. I usually try to find a similar shirt or shoes to what I already own and build up from there.

Fun50s, I 2nd shedev's recommendation to check out wiw's of people whose style you admire. Also, check out their finds, which may help you find new stores. I also recommend Angie's MOTG posts, which IMO, work for any age.
Ald,can you tell us which stores haven't worked? That may help fabbers to give more targeted advice.

Hi Fun50s, I just turned 49 myself, but I feel your frustration. I am only 5'0 so I absolutely need petite sizing, which limits options right out of the gate, and many of my standby favorite retailers who offer petites are slowing moving more and more online -- "online exclusive" means you can't try this in a store. Grrrr. Lots of returns.

What's more, I've gained some weight since the beginning of the year, so I am finding I'm in an awkward-between sizes state right now. My usual size is too tight, but go one size up, and the proportions are off vertically, OR it's too baggy.

I would say right now is not the best time to shop for summer clothes, particularly if you are a hard-to-fit size, as everything is picked over as they sell off the summer inventory to make room for fall clothes. For example I was in BR last week and it seemed all they had left were a zillion 0p's and a zillion 10p's -- everything in between was gone. That was not even looking at the sales rack!

Now is a good time to identify what you want -- for *next* summer. Then make a mental note to start shopping for summer clothes in the spring, while the selection is the best.

Otherwise tell us what single items you have in your closet, and we can help brainstorm a few additions that may pull it altogether.

As for traveling, I travel a lot too, for business. Check out my past posts. I set out earlier this year to build travel capsules that would enable me to not over-pack. For spring/summer, I've been sticking to a black/navy + white + pop of color theme. This fall, my plan is navy/black + grey + cognac + blush pink/raspberry.

Check out the WIWs of the fabbers who are wearing the kinds of things you are seeking. Most of my favorite things are shamelessly copied off the forum lately. Some basics may help pull your items into capsules. Can you post pics yet. If you are feeling too shy to post yourself, maybe you can post the items and the forum can help you brainstorm.

I just spent another frustrating morning shopping! I wanted a few more summer weight casual tops for the remaining warm weather. No luck! I am so frustrated by not being able to find a brand or size that fits. Everything is either way too tight or way to baggy. I go to several stores and try on lots of clothes and can't find anything. I have so many single items in my closet that don't go with anything. I need a capsule wardrobe that can make it through a season,. Angie I love your individual outfits you post but how about a summer and a fall capsule collection for those of us who lead a casual lifestyle and are over 55? I travel a fair amount as well so it needs to be able to go in a suitcase. Thanks!
