Without looking at all the other comments, I think you are thinking about these outfits a bit out of context.
Yes, the blogger is fabulous, and she looks very well put together, but in all her outfits, she is wearing a great hair do, lip color, interesting accessories like bracelets, earrings, necklaces, and nice shoes. Take all these things out, and like you she's wearing a top (interesting top nonetheless, the orange one for example) and shorts. So when you are putting together your outfits, you should take these things into account. And I am saying you, where actually mean, we. We are sometimes too harsh on ourselves. I am sure if you complemented these with your own outfits with some kick-ass makeup, hair, shoes and accessories, you'd look great too.

Maybe a v neck to break up the blocks? I love the dress. Maybe a scarf or jewelry to bring in a color, shine or texture if you want to change it up. Although I don't have a good view of it on my phone with it's small screen,

Oh, I like the dress just fine. The “ugh” feeling was because of what SarahD8 said— I wanted to put together something new and had to fall back to a sure thing instead.

It’s funny how much I like the dress. I only got it because I’d had surgery and wanted something that wouldn’t rub. I never wore it until now, and feel really good in it.

I do really like the shorts with the velvet top, but hear you on the heat issue. That color combo is fab, though! I think the champagne crop top might be cute with more coverage on the bottom...maybe a midi skirt?

Those printed shorts are fun! I like the silhouette of the tucked top though I feel you on that being a little too warm for your climate. Sleeveless velvet would be fun there. I also like the idea of a cropped top but for that you might be after something that covers a bit of the top of the shorts so you get the "cropped" feel as you move (you won't often be just standing stick straight!). Either a swingy top that flares out, something boxy and a little longer, or a tee/blouse/lightweight sweater with a banded hem.

The sweeter white top would look great with some distressed skinny jeans or rolled up BF jeans. Or maybe full on boho with flares and boots. Sounds like you might need a little contrasting style there to toughen it up a bit.

Dress looks great on its own, objectively speaking without regard to your own personal style. What feels blah about it for you?

Nothing to add except I totally feel you on sweet/girly being much harder to pull off once you have a kid.

I really like those shorts, btw, esp in #1. You could also try a sleeveless shirt with a high neck -- maybe even a sleeveless mock turtleneck? The high waist makes me think a nod to retro/pin-up styles is in order. Yeah, or a turtleneck with short or half sleeves... Might be too warm for truly hot weather?

LBD, you have me pegged! I can work the “sweet Midwestern girl” thing when I need to, but can’t stand being condescended to or patronized. It didn’t really happen til I had a baby. First time I had to buy a computer-related thing after that, the sales jerk was horrible. So that is def a look I want to avoid.

You guys have all been great. I feel better already, and am going to add pictures to this thread based on your ideas. Thanks!

I really like #1 and #2, because you look like a rockstar. There is something about these edgier outfits, that really suit you!

I also really like #5, but I can't quite make out the colors. If you're feeling blah, it might be because the colors seem washed out against the brightness of your surroundings.

You should embrace your fluorescent (as you say) legs and heap on the sunscreen. Those shorts look terrific on you, and I think the color is fine against your skin.

I would also suggest a tee-shirt, similar to the one in photo #1, that is in an icy blue or aqua, to match your eyes.

#3 & 4 are okay, but the top makes you look very sweet - and people tend to underestimate and dismiss 'sweet'. I don't know you well, but I feel like you are very smart and sharp, and being underestimated as "sweet" would drive you crazy.

Psyche is inspiring!!

I really like 1 on you - the shorts really are good. The longer white top somehow makes the proportions harder. I think tucked or shorter tops will work well.

I struggle big time with shorts and have come to the conclusion that on me low contrast between top and shorts really helps - so with my black shorts I wear dark or black tops pretty much always. With my denim shorts I can mix it up a bit more though.

I also like the dress on you. You really suit this style of dress - you had a similar one last week with stripes. I like the length and the ease of them on you.

I like the dress too! So, in fact you have an outfit for today that is simple, elegant, and polished (bracelets are a great touch), not blah at all -- though I get the frustration of trying to do something creative and not being able to make it work with what's in your closet.

I think you have the right idea with the champagne top -- something on the cropped (if not belly-baring) side, and a color that coordinates with the shorts but lightens them up. Blush pink?

Have you tried the shorts with the cobalt tank from your plum-good-capsule thread? Obviously the color is not right but the cut might be, and if so it could provide a benchmark of what to look for in a more suitable shade?

The dress is fabulous and so are the shorts. I think you have the right idea with the velvet top, even tho it itself is too warm - tucked and tidy, short sleeves.

Those are great fall shorts! Very seasonally appropriate.

I think the proportions are throwing you off, especially when you compare your attempts with today’s blogger. Her shorts are much longer than the top whereas your outfits are creating more equal blocks of color. One option is to try a lightweight 3/4 sleeve or long sleeve top. I don’t think the proportions in 2 are bad either, but I prefer the low-contrast look with the burgundy top and I’d probably also like them with black (but I get that you may not be a fan).

And I do understand your instincts to try to pair the high waist with a shorter top. I like the idea, but I think you need an untucked top. I personally find that combination difficult to pull off unless I’ve purchased pieces specifically to wear together.

Isn’t today’s featured blogger inspiring? She showed up right on the day when our temps are shooting back up. Looking at her and reading Inge’s text, I got all kinds of great ideas. But when I tried to transfer them to my challenge, not so much.

These are the shorts I wore way at the beginning. I didn’t want to repeat the cranberry top with them, so I pulled out a velvet shirt I’m planning to wear on Christmas. I think I needed a belt, and besides that, it was too hot. On to the next. The 80 year old women in saris in Dar es Salaam look great with their bellies showing. Me, in a top I must’ve picked up at a fair somewhere (I wanted to try champagne with the shorts), not so much. The tank tops untucked all looked sloppy, as did the short-sleeved shirt.

If you have ideas on styling these high-waisted shorts for warm weather, I’d love to hear them. I think a champagne or pink sleeveless top with a little structure to it could work. I’ve worn them with black. It’s pretty uninspiring—too much darkness, and makes my legs look fluorescent.

I haven’t worn the b/w dress on its own yet, so that’s today’s outfit. Blah. Good thing I like the dress.
