Firstly, I have added some more pics to the OP in response to many of your suggestions.

Dimity - of course you won't get kicked out!!

I agree - you have to have room in the body once it gets that hot!

Rachylou - I do like long and untucked. For this outfit because1) of the shirring (see pic above) 2) it is too hot to tuck or belt

Plus DH prefers it and I feel slimmer. But I do wear other silhouettes as well

I find it hard to buy the sort of shorts that I find coolest, so I end up making them. For me, it's 100% cotton in a calico weight cotton (like gingham, for example. Not see-through). I make elastic waist shorts for around the house with a wide leg (maybe 10cm of loose fabric at the hem) that come mid to lower thigh. These are bearable on days like today when it's going to be 35 degrees. I wear a cotton tunic in a cotton voile weight fabric on top. The tunic covers the waist so no-one sees the elastic waist.

Do I get kicked out of YLF for admitting to wearing elastic waist shorts? Oh, the shame.

When I'm going out on a hot day, I'll wear a cotton dress that hovers around the knee. I usually wear this with a longish necklace, like wooden or glass beads or a pendant that finish just above bust height. I've got a bit thingy about wearing sleeveless lately so I'll make it with sleeves, usually a shift or A-line dress with lots of room in the body. For me, this is the coolest thing I can find. We don't have air-con (we live off-grid with solar power) so I do what I can to stay cool. I plan on making one today in white for Christmas day, with white cotton lace sleeves.

You look amazing in that deep purple-eggplant, Anne!

I think the other outfit is quite nice, although I see you as more serious, powerful person than the frills would suggest.

I notice you like to wear your tops long and untucked... just an observation

No pics yet, but wanted to address a couple of points

I guess the reason I thought it unflattering is that I have put on a little weight recently and the large amount of gathering (not pleats) adds to the hip width - and it addition my waist isn't so small so there isn't much contrast there.

Also Angie - I have always shied away from drop waist dresses because of my short legs. Comments?

Dimity - I am not nearly in such hot an area as you but I can really relate to the challenges of hot weather dressing. I have 2 sundresses dedicated to 35 + days and want to find another one. I can't bear sleeves or collars and have spaghetti straps. I think I could bear very lightweight shorts and a tank or cami but haven't found shorts yet.
For slightly lower temperature this skirt would be okay - too hot for an a - line skirt but maybe ok to wear with a lightweight tee - not the one in the original pot though as it has a cami - I wouldn't wear that over about 28 at the highest.

I love skirts that lie flat over the hips and then have pleats start lower down. I do wear tops that then come down over the fitted part that gives the "dress" look Angie described. So your white top does that. I agree a more delicate necklace is good, too, with the blouse already having some detail. If you have a very simple T that comes to just at or above the pleats--white or a pale pastel--that would work too. A simple sandal might look great, too. This looks like a very versatile summer skirt, so I hope you keep playing with it to find your look.

Yes, I can be quite the spanner. The top and skirt worn together look like a low waisted dress. It works to my eye.

The silver shoes sound like a better idea. And then a silver necklace. Let your specs be the only spot of colour. xo

Lovely re-do! And I must say, you have an enviable figure. If you were willing to try a shorter top as suggested, I bet it would look great. I get being self-concious about hips but other people's eyes are not drawn there the way our own are. And we're here for honest feedback if you have doubts.

Anne if I may be completely honest, I feel there is too much going on here. The flouncy skirt and the ruffle on the top is just too busy. The top is also too long! And the proportions are not quite right. I totally get how in theory this would work but the practical application is a little different. I feel each of these items needs something very simple to play with them. A cropped, soft but boxy top could be quite complimentary to the skirt and bring in some structure. The top would work nicely over a simple pair of jeans or perhaps straight leg pants.

Looking forward to meeting up in Jan xxx

BTW, I love Target clearance for casual basics. I got a pair of white knee length shorts recently for $8, and they're great. Not too thin so that they are see-through, and not too thick so they're hot. But the best deals will be in a few weeks.

Ah, that changes things! Perhaps I'm paranoid, but I swear that those shirred panels add an inch to my hips. I wonder about a light cotton tunic top with a V neck and 3/4 length sleeves to balance the volume on the bottom half? It would be very voluminous but cover the shirring and might look okay with a long beaded necklace to emphasise the boho, floaty vibe.
This is something I struggle with so I'm not purporting to have answers, I'm just throwing suggestions into the ring hoping that perhaps we might come up with a solution.
I find straight skirts too hot, same as you. A line ones allow more air flow around my legs so I find them more comfortable, but then the tops become an issue. T shirts work, but can be too hot in tropical heat. So then I turn to dresses, which seem to be hard to find in cotton, not-see-through, not expensive, sleeves, not too short. So I sympathise. Hot weather dressing is hard, especially when it's for months on end and everything needs washing all the time.

I love that skirt shape, but it's tricky to style I'll agree. Maybe a simple tee?

Oh yes I meant to say - I know that flats won't be everyone's cup of tea and they aren't the main focus of the question (I have other shoes I could wear)
The main thing I wanted to ask about is the skirt

Dimity I agree that the top is too long - I have felt better wearing it with shorts. The trouble is that the skirt has a shirred panel around the hips that I want to cover up!!
I also feel that the skirt if so full that I am not sure if a boxy top would be too volumnous all over although it might be worth trying if I buy one

This skirt was not one of my usual thought out purchases, I confess. Last summer I didn't spend a cent on casual clothes until about February, when frustrated because in the hottest weather straighter skirts are just too hot, and seeing it marked down in Target, I bought this one (and a sleeveless shirt).
But I feel it isn't a good look on my pear shaped lower half

I wonder if a boxy cropped top in a mid tone colour paired with pointy toe flats might feel more flattering? Then a longer, pendant necklace. I love flared skirts but never feel quite right when the top is long.

Wore this today. Didn't feel flattering. Would love suggestions!

Eta : have tried as many clothing suggestions as I could muster from my wardrobe - sorry I forgot to try the necklace ones

pic 3 shows why I don't tuck this skirt
