I think a low chunky heel can work. It's all in the styling. See the very classic Vara

What Diana said! I love the Valentino Rockstud flats:
http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/va.....at/3477176

Although out of my price range I know there are some knock-offs/lookalikes out there, if you want to go that direction.

Thistle-thanks, I have a pair of well worn smoking slippers, and some very summery oxfords with mesh sides.

Kkards-those are great-wedgies with pointy toes-definitely non frump pld lady shoes

Thistle-all great choices-looking for something a little dressier than the loafers and will be looking into the Kate spades. You have good shoe tastes.

I second Thistle's suggestions for oxfords or smoking slippers. Another thing to look for is low heels with pointy toes. I find the pointy toe does wonders to offset the potential frumpiness of a low block or kitten heel.

Have you looked at oxfords? On trend and generally lowered heeled.

Also, smoking slippers. Very on trend and lowered heeled.

Well...I have just had to dump all of my heels and at least half of my flats because of a toe issue. I've been actively replacing them with what I hope are non-frumpy shoes. Links to the ones I've bought so far:

I've ordered many more than this, but these are the ones I like and my Dr approved, so the others have been returned. Working on sandals now, with several scheduled to arrive on Wed.

Hope you find what you want!

Kkards's suggestion of wedges instead of a chunky heel is a good one. I find that lower heels can look frumpy, although chunky heels have come back recently, in a sort of ironic way. I think it depends on how you style the overall outfit, although sometimes a particular item isn't worth the work!

I have a pair of pumps with 1 1/2 inch gold plated chunky heels. They are fairly comfy and don't look frumpy to me. Maybe it is the gold, and also they height since I have purged so many shoes there will be wardrobe holes when it get too warm for boots and booties. I have been looking at some shoes to replace ballet flats and higher heels. I am finding the low heels like my gold plated heel pumps most of the time look frumpy like 1 inch or so. Any ideas of some that do not look frumpy, but still cover most of foot, not cut outs or toe outs etc. as it is still too cool in March thru early May for me to wear open shoes at night. Also the skinny kitten heels look too dressy to me. Guess the look I am going for is more like dressy casual maybe 1 inch heels, and not those comfort shoes.
