Yes, there is loads of room to find something between #3 and a hoochie mama dress! Suz's is a great example.

A serious note....on the beige shoes...my mother (89) has a similar pair in black. She hates them, but they were prescribed after a fall and broken ankle/ foot. And she has no choice. It is the case for many women. Those particular ones look as if they are shoes for people with diabetes. I think we can all agree that they are ugly, but some people really can't choose. Ditto for the elastic was it pants. Buttons, zippers, and other fasteners can become very difficult for arthritic fingers.

<steps off soapbox, and thus endeth the threadjack.> ;)

I want to focus here on the June event. It is true that it can be challenging to find nice dressy clothing that is not either frumptastic or more like something a lady of the night might choose -- but it is far from impossible, and many of us here have done it. So, Always Trying, what is your event? What is the weather likely to be? What is your body type and what are your style preferences?

Let's get shopping!!! :)

I have a terrific dress that I think would be suitable for most events. It is not frumpy (I don't think) and it is modest. It might not be the right type of style for your event or your body type, but it offers and example, no? Please don't despair!

We can help! :)

April, I would rather kill myself in stilettos than walk in the shoes you posted...how is that for vanity. :^) Oy.

I agree that all three are frumpy, though #3 is the least frumpy. I think #3 could work without the jacket--it's the jacket that seems to be the deal-breaker.

Always Trying, you are right that designers do not give a very good selection of modest clothing to consumers. It seems like they want to design the sleeveless, short-skirted stuff but then just throw in a long-skirted, long-sleeved dress as an afterthought so that they can feel like they've been inclusive. It's annoying. Not everyone is comfortable showing that much skin.

Some people have gone to rental places to get formal dresses. Maybe you would like to create a thread asking people where they recommend? I wonder if you could find something that way.

Ha -- I wish. Those jeans are available for sale right now at a Major Online Retailer.

And the ubiquitous taupe rubber-soled shoes -- judging by the number of elderly ladies I see wearing those, I swear they must be reimbursable by some retirement plans. (I'm all about happy feet and you'll never see me tottering around on a stiletto heel, but ladies, ladies! Please. There are other styles out there.)

Well I am not buying any of the above, nor do I own them, as I think 1 and 2 are definitely frumpy. On another forum some think 3 is ok for mother of bride or groom. One thing for sure is it is not easy to be really unfrumpy if you have t o go to a more formal or dressy event in warm weather if you don't wear sleevless, low cut, and or short.

JUst thinking ahead, I will have to attend an event in June, and will not be able to find anything suitable , and may have to go frumpy. this will be depressing.

April-those jeans are the old mom jeans, right?

Frump is so subjective. Personally I think 3 could go either way, elegant or a little dated looking. But a shorter length on the jacket would make it less questionable and more definitely chic in my book.

Some things can be saved by styling, and some things cannot be unfrumped by any means.

With some items (cardigans come to mind), it's easy to stray into frumpdom unintentionally, just via careless styling.

But there are garments that require a full-on leap -- no gentle straying involved. I offer a few examples below.

Not an expert, but to my eye, #1 looks frumpy, fullstop, perhaps because the pants don't seem to be a flattering cut. #2 and #3 would feel frumpy to me, but if I were older, had long or shapely calves, and wore heels, #2 would pass. The cut is fine, it's more the pattern/texture of the jacket that hints at a frump factor.

Frumpiness depends not only clothing, but on age, style and body types. Running shoes turns any outfit on me into a frumpy outfit because of body dimensions, for example.

I probably shouldn't answer this because 1) I'm no expert and 2) I'm probably frumpy a lot. But I'll answer anyway.

I think #3 is lovely and would be good for a mother of the bride or mother of the groom. Of course it would need to be styled to be elevated to fab.

I think #2 is frumpy. I think #1 is marginal. Sorry.

some things are definitely frumpy like in photo 1 and maybe 2 but is no 3 frumpy? also is frumpy sometimes defined by how it is styled and maybe who is wearing it?
