A side by side is definitely out (need to store wide things) and so is water/ice (Cuz the uncleanliness freaks me out). A double door would be nice tho...

Do not get a side by side fridge and freezer unless you never buy anything as big as a frozen pizza or have a separate freezer. We had. At the last house, a double door on top fridge, a freezer drawer in the bottom, and a drawer that could be anything in the middle. It would be ideal for a family. The drawer could hold kid snacks so they would. It have to open the main fridge. The double doors give wide access for trays for entertaining.
Think whether or not you want a water/ice dispenser on the door before shopping.

Every Hotpoint I’ve had (which is all of them) the bottom shelf is plastic (the others are racks) that splits down the middle. But darn it, if that doesn’t seem to be the only fridge that fits into old houses... unless you want a 50k fridge, for which you could get a nice whole kitchen do-over...

I have that washing machine! They fixed it, it's still awful. We got it cheap cause it was returned :/
Don't recommend my fridge either. Not home atm to see what it is but the drawers and side rails are cheap plastic that break easily.

torontogirl, I think I remember hearing about the washer thing

I got my fridge from a local appliance store that does warehouse sales for about twice a year. My had some small random dent.

Currently I'm looking for a new stand alone wine fridge. Apparently Costco doesn't have the highest rated ones, or anywhere near the highest ones.

Lol Rachy ... actually all our appliances are KitchenAid, only because we needed to buy everything when our house was built and the appliance store had a deal on if you bought three KitchenAid appliances at once. the fridge, microwave and stove have all been good. The dishwasher was not, but dishwashers can be a pain (we have a GE profile one now, which is another appliance brand I've had luck with).

Anna our washing machine is a Samsung, and although it washes great, we did have to get a repair done due to a recall where the spin cycle was so powerful it was blowing the top right off some of them! Kinda funny now that it's not going to fly off and kill someone *facepalm*

Ok. I’ll keep Kitchen Aid in mind. Now that I think about it... that’s the same as the mixer maker? I sorta never connected mixers with refrigerators(!) My whole life I’ve basically lived with a Hot Point because apartments and old houses... it’s *like* the smallest big fridge.

No brilliant advice Rachy, but our KitchenAid is almost twelve years old and going strong *knocks wood*

Freezers on top are more energy efficient. But depending on one’s height it can take some getting used to to not hit your head on it when using the refrigerator section.
