Definitely tease and spray, but if you have an actual teasing brush (as opposed to a comb) you'll have much better success. You could also try gathering a portion of the hair at the top almost as if you were doing a half-up style and start the French braid a bit further back.

I always wash my hair properly then with the help of teasing comb I try to make it wavy . With the help of hair spray you can tighten the portions which you want should tight. I always make my french braid like this. You can get more useful information about this from NATURAL BRAID website. They have amazing videos and hair products for braiding.

Hi

All you will need is a teasing comb and hair spray

before you start making the french braid tease the hair around your crown with the teasing comb

once your hair has been teased spray it with hairspray it will stand straight up at your crown

then brush the section you have teased down and spray hairspray it

that will create a fuller effect at your crown and braid as normall

You can try teasing your hair at the crown then braiding it to hide and contain where you have teased. I do this sometime with ponytails.

I lie on the bed with my head hanging a little bit past the end, so my hair is almost falling "up". And I braid it in that position, so the fulness of my hair is being worked into the crown. (I also find this a more comfortable position for my arms.) Because my hair is so fine, the volume eventually drifts downward, but if your hair has lots of body it should work.

The whole point of french braid is to contain volume, so I'm not really sure what you mean. Once you've done the braid, you can tug on it to loosen the braid and give the braid itself more volume. Also a dutch braid (where you bring each strand under, instead of over like french braid) sits on top of the head, instead of sinking into the hairline, which will give more volume. Tons and tons of tutorials about braids out there, including demos on YouTube.
