Depends on the jeans. Often they are ok on their own but sometimes not. I have a pair of Mother jeans that just kept fraying and fraying. I sewed a line of stitching just at the top of the fray line.

I'm a big fan of Fray Check and use it often but I would not use it for this purpose.

It's never been an issue on any of the many frayed bottom jeans I own. If any one piece gets crazily long , just trim it back!

I have a sweatshirt with the same problem—washing machine really tore up what had been a pleasantly frayed bottom edge.

If I remember right, my friend who is a skilled seamstress says that the stray threads will eventually wrap around each other and stop fraying. I think she would agree with Angie that you don't need to do anything.

If you are worried, try the Fray Check, but you probably don't need to do anything. I have both purchased and DIY frayed jeans. You might also try washing them in a mesh bag if washing in the machine.

I wore jean cut offs for years when I lived in FL and they usually frayed through the first washes and then stopped once the horizontal to the leg opening thread was uniform. It helped to never pull the hanging threads and not to cut them too short either.

I️ think that a thin line of stay stitching should work.

Do I need to sew a line of stay stitching above the fringe of my DIY released hem jeans? I have washed them twice and don’t want more fraying.

Does anyone with a pair either DIY or store-bought have info? If I do need to stitch, how far above the cut edge should I go? Or would a thin line of Fray Check do the trick
