Mine animal comparisons are hilarious. In college I was compared to a rabbit because I scared so easily. I later had a boyfriend who called me Belka, which is Russian for squirrel. Considering my long and complicated relationships with squirrels, it's actually a bit apt.

If I had an extra $20,000 laying around, I would definitely get THIS cat. Larger than a Savannah hybird, selected for size, sweet personality, and a wild coat. The breeders spent 20 years developing the breed. Two year waiting list!

My DH says my spirit animal/daemon would be a Stellars Jay (or most any Jay). They are active, garrulous, feisty and like shiny things. Sounds about right.

You are hereby a Cheetoh cat.

Funny about not being able to choose a dolphin or otter for yourself. I alway tell my husband that if he were an animal he would be an otter. He's fun-loving, easy-going and has short legs for his height. He was not amused at my choice of animal for him. He then told me I would be a sugar glider since I have big eyes and tend to stay up until the wee hours of the night if I don't have a reason to get up early the next morning.

Ornella, I read those books a few years ago, before the movie came out, and LOVED the idea of a daemon (even as an adult, and no, not Matt Damon!)... I remember the daemon as being a complement to the personality of its human. Wish I had one!

Spirit animal isn't really the correct term for the game we were playing (agree with Ariadne that I don't want to culturally appropriate). It was more like "what animal are you most like?" - not what animal do you like best or wish you could be. Thus my very maternal friend was a moose, another mischievoous friend was a monkey, etc. This was on a 40th birthday trip to Hawai'i with girlfriends for a friend of mine. As a gift for everyone, I handmade a book for each of us with a picture of the person and a written description of them by each of the other friends on the trip, simlar to your friend's letter to you. Isn't it wonderful to hear why your friends love you, and tell them why you love them?

What a great story Una.

I don't know what animal would be me. But here's a story that I instantly remembered.

While still living in England, my friends and I had a book club, and I loved those get-togehers. These were mostly my mum-friends from the ante-natal course before our babies were born, and most of our conversations were revolving around kids, but having a book club brought another dimension to our lives. It was also nice that the book club group grew organically, as we brought our other friends in it and the circle gradually increased.

In February we read "Northern Lights" by Philip Pullman (the book has been made into a film "The Golden Compass"). This was a kind of book I'd never pick myself, but was so glad we read it as I enjoyed the writing style so much, as well such an unusual story and wonderful characters. Without uncovering too much, I'll just mention that in the book all humans have a deamon - an animal that forms another part of their being, is their friend and is also their confidante, advisor, their other self.

During our discussion we talked about what animal would be our own demons. This is what your question reminded me of. (And most of us had no idea what our deamons would be, but felt that if it could be other humans, than our husbands or partners had fit the description.)

Later that same evening when the discussion moved away from the books to general stuff, I told my friends that I'd be moving away in three months, as in that week things started to finalize with our plans so we could start telling everyone. These were big news, as was to be expected. What I found interesting were the reactions of my friends, very telling of their individual characters and our own individual relationships. The one who was the quietest was J., the look of shock and confusion on her face was so big that she just looked through me, not at me for the rest of the evening.

Tomorrow night she had send me an email. It was short and beautiful, simple and unpretentious, all the thoughts I could see she was trying to come to terms with the night before were in it, but digested through.

She ended her email with "By the way, I think your daemon would be a cat ..." and she went on why she thought so in such a way that I get goosebumps just remembering it.
Whether or not I'm a cat she described I don't know, but I'll always be grateful to her for that outpour of emotions.

And thank you for prompting me to remember this episode...

SO awesome! Wolverine may not be my spirit animal, but he is one of my fave comic book characters ever.

"Everyone chooses dolphin or otter for themselves"... LOL. I would have thought wolf, tiger, and eagle would be popular. I guess if I had to be honest about my own spirit animal, it'd be a Cheetoh cat - wild looking on the outside, but soft and domesticated on the inside. o_0

Female moose are actually incredibly protective mothers! Yes, they are goofy-looking as adults, but the babies are ADORABLE!

The chain I got is 20" - I think that's the best length for me. Glad you like it!

One of my best friends and I always teased that our "spirit animal" (said in a lovingly joking way--I'm so sensitive to the risk of being cultural appropriation-y) was the moose. I used to live somewhere with lots of them and I just love them, find them absurd, and am also a bit terrified of them (at dusk on wilderness roads, at least). Baby moose (meese!) are Mother Nature's funniest joke. I also love octopi and many types of birds.

I don't know what animal would actually best characterize me, though.

Your pendant is eerie and beautiful. Great find. How long is it?

I have been coveting Rae's cougar skull necklace but wanting something more Alaskan - yet not a wolf. Love wolves, but it's such a common motif here! So browsing around this evening I found this wolverine skull pendant!

http://www.etsy.com/listing/98.....h_type=all

Backstory: my friends once jokingly picked the wolverine for my spirit animal - at the time it was because they claimed I am small but vicious and tenacious and can drag prey ten times my size. Not so flattering, as I, like everyone else, was hoping to be an otter. However, we recently watched a show on wolverines and found they are actually loyal, sociable and incredibly resourceful as well as clever and persistent.

Whether that's me or not, I've found my skull necklace!

What animal would best characterize you? (And be honest! Everyone chooses dolphin or otter for themselves... That's why our rule was that you couldn't pick your own spirit animal.)
