Because I'm an excessive person, I would probably have a studio wardrobe... but they'd be good looking clothes, hehe.

I say a). A painter capsule of cute things. But I'd suggest not using all of your good things in the capsule. I don't know about you, but once I put my things in the bakery capsule, I don't wear them at the office even if I could.
Yay, congrats!

Your question reminded me of an over-the-top option: the student coveralls of Finland and Sweden. I would love to see this IRL.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Student_overall

Where to get such a thing? Rosie's Workwear. I just bought a pair of their overalls that convert to capris for my summer gear (which comprises 90% of what I need here at the ranch). The quality and fit are outstanding for what they are. And the coveralls, with sleeves, come in so many cute colors.
https://www.rosiesworkwear.com/coveralls.php

Slip it on if it looks messy, but then you can do classroom stuff in nice daywear. I could see them becoming a badge of honor with paint dribbles as your schooling progresses. Not for everyone, but you are an ART student only once, so you can do funky and wild on campus if you want.
I happen to see this thread, have not gotten a message yet but thought I would chime in.
First of all, congrats in getting in to art school!
As far as wardrobe it all depends on the class.
Illustration and design classes are usually less messy than oil painting or charcoal. I think an apron is fine for those classes.
I would always be fashionable, whether casually or more dressed up.
When I teach design I can wear anything because we used water based media and work small scale-
Drawing is a different deal- charcoal gets on everything , I always wear black.
I also teach oil painting and have a very cool apron that I got from the Tate museum in London. It covers really well and is also kind of cool.
http://shop.tate.org.uk/aprons.....rel,aprons
I think it is important to reflect a personal style as both a student or teacher in art school.
Honestly, people can really get a sense whether or not you have an eye for art by the way you put together outfits.
This is my opinion, I am sure some academic art teachers would disagree.
I love to see what my students are wearing and we talk about fashion a lot in my classes. They are always asking advice on glasses, color , proportions- I relate it to other topics in class.
A seperate painting wardrobe is ok as long as it is fab. Some jeans of mine would look fine with paint on them as well as some well worn rugged boots or cool sneakers.
Be creative , have fun, do not force yourself to be trendy if you are not.
A classic art student is just as cool in my opinion- think of Tim Gunn on PR- he is so classic but cool because it is his style.
I have had male students in buttondown oxford shirts and blazers looking great!
Stay away from things like wooden fish earrings.
Hope that helps!

Congratulations! Having seen your sketch here I'm sure you'll do well.

W2W- You have two choices
Have a paint clothes wardrobe or
Feel goofy and be the first adult to wear a long sleeve paint shirt. I have a heavy long sleeve white maternity shirt that I sometimes wear. I bought it specifically to use as a paint shirt. It works well.

Congratulations, Elisabeth, on your acceptance at Emily Carr. I've known a few students who have graduated from there; the experience has uniformly been a good one for all them. The student exhibitions are always so interesting--one of my favorite things to do if I'm in Vancouver at that time.

From what I've seen when I've been at the school, most of the students combine functionality with a lot of creativity in their dress. It's a visual treat to just walk around the place and always puts a smile on my face. Depending on the group you are in, you might find yourself spending much of your time with students who are a few years younger. I've noticed that, under those circumstances, the older students usually end up wearing a version of what they see around them; dressing in a similar way helps them connect with the other students in the program. But, at Emily Carr, that leaves you with lots of room to express your own creativity in how you dress. ;)
Thanks again, everyone! Yes, I'm very much looking forward to it. :-)

Julie -- argh, charcoal. I forgot about that. I have real psychological problems with charcoal. I get it everywhere (including, inevitably, all over my face), and I'm the type of person who can't stand having dirty hands.

Part of the reason that I'm leaning toward (a) is that I am a ridiculously careful painter. I tend not to spill or wipe on myself, so as long as it's paint we're talking about, I'm neat and tidy. But charcoal seems to have a mind of its own when I'm holding it in my hand.

All right, off to spam Jean. :-)
Ha! yes I know toddlers and big shirts lol! I think I had a romantic vision of an artists tunic in mind with one of those wide stand up turtlenecks! If your apron covers most of your body then really I guess its your tops that you need to have several of that you don't mind getting a bit mucky and you can throw in the wash.

In yesterday's rather gloomy post, I forgot to mention the one bit of very good news: I've been accepted to art school. Yay! (Emily Carr, for those of you familiar with Vancouver). I sat down with my husband last Christmas holiday to do some long-term planning. It was becoming clear that in order to accomplish my goals, I would need at least a BFA, so applied to Emily Carr with the intention of doing a 4-year BFA in illustration. I can probably complete it in a bit less time, because of transfer credit from the BSc. I did back in the 90s. So now's the time. I'm not getting any younger. I start in September. I'm really looking forward to it, but my excitement is mixed with trepidation, owing to all the other demands on my time.

So, onto the style question: what to wear? I've taken studio classes before (albeit mostly non-credit ones), and there seem to be two schools of thought: (a) wear your good clothes and decide not to care if you get paint on them, or (b) have a "paint clothes" wardrobe that's separate from your street clothes. Which would you choose? I'm leaning toward (a), with some exceptions.
