Annag., that's awesome! Now I can tell my neurotic brain that I didn't spend sixty bucks, I *saved* one thousand, nine hundred and thirty something by not buying the designer version!

I was well-trained with a bargain-hunting mom, but I think most of my current hesitation about spending money comes from the fact that my husband is the primary breadwinner right now. It feels OK to spend money on groceries or on the house or something we'd both use, but clothes and shoes and stuff are, to a certain extent, optional. This is coming primarily from me, and not from anything he has said - he's been wonderful supporting my efforts to write and to try to make a living doing that. But I still don't want to be extravagant especially when it's not money I've earned. (/babble)

The shoes are the Naturalizer Hasten - I don't see them on the Naturalizer site, but the DSW site still has them; not too many sizes left in the b/w tweed but there's also a brown tweed and a solid color version.

Haven't yet used the bag, but I plan to. Yesterday I packed it up with all my stuff and gave it a trial run around the house.

That bag is very similar to the Proenza Schouler PS1

I so know how you feel! It hard to spend the big bucks on a few items, but I think that is the right direction to be moving in. If the bag is good quality and funtional for you (and you love it) then carry it around in your house. Hold it on your lap while you watch TV and if it's true love, cut the tags and take it out! If the shoes are comfortable, keep and wear. Now...if I can just take my own advice.

Laura, is it a hesitation because of how much you payed for it or is it because you do not love it enough to forget how much you spent on it? I know it happens with me and bags:: unless I love it I cannot spent even $50 on it (and believe me, it is very hard for me to fall in love with the bag!)
So if you love this bag cut the tags and use it tomorrow. Just forget about $$$! I had a similar case with my red bag: it was the most expensive bag I ever bought but every time I use it I am happy and it worth the $$$!

Laura, that bag is a WORK expense and you should write some of it off. I am NOT joking.

(To tell the truth, we couldn't do that here in Canada, but I believe your tax laws are different from ours and it might in fact be possible. And even if it is not, this is a very legitimate BUSINESS expense. Does that help with the guilt? You are treating yourself as a professional.)

As for the shoes, we cannot live without footwear in our climate and urban landscape. You needed shoes. These are cute and very "you." Good buy.

I love the looks of the bag, but for me personally I find that I am always super annoyed by a bag with a flap like that one that I have to mess with when I want to get into my bag. YMMV, of course. Again, it looks fab and if you don't mind the lack of instant access then I say definitely keep!

The shoes are fabbity fab fab!

Rhubarb girl/Laura, I'm not a Catholic either, and I've got to tell you: I love your new gray bag and the shoes. Where did you get the flats? Darling!!! You did so well and I wouldn't feel confessional about ANY of it. You need a bag and this works for you, right? I actually find it kind of luscious and the combination of leather and suede is really wonderful. So, go, enjoy and know you did the right thing! I applaud you! btw, I love rhubarb custard pie (my Dad makes a KILLER one!).

Ooh, I really like the hardware on your bag The shoes have that great tweedy fall texture, too.
I *so* get the spending $100 on one item being hard even though nickel and diming it away on several items seems somehow fine. So silly. But if I feel it, too, it's very real indeed!

srly get over it and bust out that bag already.

if you're worried about wear, the cobbler can spray the suede to make it water resistant. i was dubious, but i saw water bead off a recently treated shoe.

srly, cut the tags off and use tomorrow.

that's an order.

The tweed shoes are totally you. Great texture and fun! I like the bag too although I confess that I am somewhat *still* bag impaired. The bag looks classic to me.

I am not Catholic, but I kinda feel like I am going to confession with this post. A few weeks ago* I bought a new handbag/briefcase/whatever. I got it at DSW and it was on sale and I had a coupon, but it still cost more than I’ve ever spent for a bag in my life (you handbag lovers would so laugh at me). I still haven’t used it - I’m not sure if it’s the $ or what.

It’s gray and mixed leather and suede, and big enough for my notebook and printouts for when I’m writing away from home. (I tend to have two sizes of bags - one big enough for writing stuff and one just big enough for my wallet, phone, etc.) Maybe it’s the suede that’s making me nervous about the durability? They had the same bag in plain leather in other colors, but they were not on clearance so were quite a bit pricier.

I also picked up these cute tweed flats, which seem totally my style, and a great replacement for the black/cream zebra print flats that are on their last legs that I wear way too much, but I haven’t worn them later. I am having a serious OMG I spent too much $ moment here, even though it’s not really that much and I can afford it. Why is it that it’s so much easier to buy 10 thrift-store garments for $10 than it is to spend ~100 bucks on a bag and some shoes?

I guess I'm wondering a) are these me, and b) are they killer enough?

*Before I started SYCing officially, but since I’d excluded accessories and shoes from it, since that’s where my wardrobe holes are right now…
