runcarla, so the mini module idea means you are maybe wearing the same skirt twice in the same week but with different tops each time. And wearing the same top twice in a week but wearing it with different bottoms? Is this the idea of a mini module? Also, what is an outlier when referring to the mini module? Is it an extra outfit, an extra piece of an outfit or is it some piece that stands out that you wear a few times but in different ways? So in the mini module there is some continuity between or similarity between the outfits and they all fit within the theme? And then next week is a new theme? Sorry, this mini module idea is VERY new to me!

Firstly - well done on having a wardrobe where you like everything!!

Secondly - this doesn't really happen to me. I think it is because I have a relatively small wardrobe (about 100 items), and a slow turnover. And when I buy things I think in categories. Eg one new casual sweater per winter (usually), one new jacket a year (max). And each category - eg "hot summer", " smart casual - winter" etc doesn't have that much in it, so I'm not likely to forget what it is it. Some less worn, often older items are in very obscure categories though, eg ("non crushable dress, that YLF likes" "very lightweight shirt to wear if I have to go outside on a very hot day")

When I buy something new I try to work out how often to wear it eg - new work skirt - at least once a fortnight.

That's not to say that I don't have favourites though. but it isn't that I have forgotten the lesser worn items.

Just in case I sound too organized I should admit that I often have the opposite problem - I know what I have in my wardrove but I CAN'T find it. Currently this is the case for both my long sleeve work cardigans which are workhorses!

I think a couple of solutions would be

1. capsule creation, which takes time but can be fun and creative
2. making pics -- either of outfits you actually wear, or of your wardrobe items, then, instead of going through your closet and dresser, you thumb through the pics on your phone or computer to get dressed in the morning. I will look at the pics a few times a season, as a reminder.

I need to be able to see everything, too. Even with separate closets for summer and winter clothes my eyes just seem to skim over parts of my closet and then I'll later find something wonderful and wonder why I'd forgotten about it! Keeping items in dressers is 10x worse. Maybe it's time to catalogue my pieces online.

Sterling, I use a corner of a guest room closet for a holding zone. I find that I rarely if ever rescue items once they're there.

This can be a real problem for me. I have to be able to see every single piece in my wardrobe for it to be worn. First, I switch out seasonally. It is a lot of work, but worth it to me.

I only have the clothing that will be worn that season in my working closet. I have two closets available to me. I hang all my bottoms in my closet. They are arranged according to category: work, casual, lounging. I do the same with tops (same arrangement in the second closet). I fold knits and place them above the hanging items. I can see everything in a flash. There is nothing that gets pushed back or hidden behind other pieces.

This method works well because I also know which pieces are not being worn. If things are not be worn, then I have to decide why they are not being worn (they are, after all, in my working closet). When I switch out my closet at the end of the season, those pieces that weren't worn are immedately thrifted.

The one time my system failed me was when I decided not to thrift unworn pieces at the end of the season. I washed, ironed, and folded them away for the next year. When I pulled them out, I found I felt exactly the same way about them and regretted the work that went into storing them away only to thrift them.

I realize that a lot of YLFs have a holding zone for things they are on the fence about. I would be curious as to how often items are rescued from the holding zone and how often it is just a middle step. I find I rarely rescue an item from the holding zone. I say rarely, but I wonder if I mean "never."

Since I have minimal time in the am in order to catch an early commute, part of my weekend routine is to put together a 'mini module' a la Rachylou.

I pick a theme and mix and match a week's worth of outfits with one or two outliers to account for a fluctuation in weather/temps or casual Friday.

Unless something really weird happens, I wear outfits created from the weekly capsule.

If something is getting neglected, I might make it a personal challenge to get it o to rotation.

Yup. I don't use dressers because of this. I use shelves instead, with a door like a wardrobe, and a few shelves inside the closet. I also keep almost all of my in season shoes (excluding really dressy ones) out in the open on a large shoe rack in my entry hall. Even so, I find some things get pushed into corners of the closet and I forget about them. I'll occasionally go through the closet and find a couple of items I've not worn for a while, in which case I'll take them and hang them on the outside of the closet so I remember to wear them.

Guilty. No solution from me. I am pretty consistently horrified when "tidying " my drawers and closets as I 'm always finding new things I forgot I had. That to me is one of the signs of a compulsive shopper - aka, me, when I'm stressed out.

Thanks! All great ideas and no, I do not presently do any of them (but I will start). I like this Random Outfit Generator idea. (I have started cooking in the same way, don't tell anyone) I will try a few of these ideas out and let you know how it goes! Thanks again!

Do you organize your closet? I have my closet divided by color and then by items in each color category. Neutrals are first, light to dark, then colors. It may also help to plan outfits for a week or the night before, hanging what you plan to wear in a special place.
Entering all your clothing into the Random Outfit Generator, then using it, may show you some items that you had forgotten.
You might also hang most of your clothes in a separate closet or pack them away so that you have less to look at when you open the closet.
Do you have other things stored in your closet? Get them out. Make your closet organized and beautiful so that you will want to look at it.

Is there any way to rearrange your closet so that more things are visible? I have the problem where I forget to wear things that are in drawers, but am pretty good about wearing hanging stuff because it's easier to see.

I like to go through my clothes when I'm putting away laundry and pull out things I haven't worn in a while, making outfits out of them if possible, and setting them in one location. Then when I'm getting dressed in the morning I don't have to come up with something clever, I can just choose from what I've already set aside.

Other approaches would be itemizing all your clothes in an app or webapp, putting them (or their analogues) in the YLF Finds so you could use the Outfit Generator, or making a list or spreadsheet of your items to refer to when you're looking for ideas.

Hi, I am having trouble searching the message boards so I don't know if there may already be a post about this...

I have a big dresser and a small/medium closet. I just took out everything from my closet for my super to paint inside and realized I don't wear things I can't see, i.e most things in my closet. I like everything in my closet but I don't think about any of it when I'm getting dressed. I realized there is no point to having any of it if I am not going to remember it's there. Does anyone else run into this problem?

If you don't have this problem, can you tell me what you maybe naturally do differently than I do? (Like maybe you take your time getting ready and actually look through the clothes in your closet each morning?)

Thanks!
