I think it if was cool enough for shorts, I would choose ballet flats or sandals.

I like the look of the lace ups better than the slip-ons too.

Lynn has a point. Converse are long and narrow -- I always have to go a half size down in them, and they're still a bit long. They do look best with full length pants. I WOULD NOT wear either Converse or Vans with shorts! Only teenaged boys can do this!

Actually, come to think of it, I'm not a fan of any kind of sneaker with shorts. Maybe gals with legs that go on forever can pull this off....but I ain't one of 'em.

I have a hard time seeing how Vans are chunky looking but Cons are not. LOL They both look chunky to me, in a fun sort of way.

My feet are a size 7.5, so in the middle of small and big. Average, I think.

I would be wearing them mostly with boot cut jeans in blue and white if the YLF hive mind approves.

Sneaker wars! Hee!

I have both Cons and Vans (or faux Vans, actually). I guess I play for both teams. :-)

As for these two options, what will you wear them with?

Okay, there is one issue with cons and vans unless you have e really small foot. They make your foot look really looong! I have black cons and really like them ( with an insert) but only with boot cuts. I found some low cut Pumas that look much better with shorts, IMO.

Vans are chunky looking. If you want a fashion sneak that is supportive, try a Converse Jack Purcell-- I swear you will be in heaven. Way better than Vans or regular All Stars.

http://www.zappos.com/product/7506339/color/1418

I usually wear orthotics and can wear the Jack Purcells without an insert.

I have the navy Vans in your second link and I really do wear them a lot -- both dress down and slightly more dressed up. Wore them with a flare skirt once and got lots of compliments. I also have a pair of light green and black plaid slip-ons, and I wear those too but definitely more casual.
You already know I prefer Vans to Cons, but you should try both to see which works better for you. Vans are not as skatepunk as people think -- they're actually based on vintage 40s and 50s sneakers (I'll admit though that I started wearing them as a skatepunk in my teens). Also, whether you get Vans or Cons or other, I'd recommend navy (or another bright shade) to black, b/c it goes better with jeans.

My kids find Vans more comfy than their Cons. Cons look best with boot cuts. I think the lower vamp of Vans would look better with bermudas. What about a Sperry Topsider? Those are back and some versions are kinda cute.

Of the two to which you have linked, the second catapults you out of your black/brown shoe purgatory and seems like they would be adorable with a Breton stripe tee or sweater, with jeans + whites, with coral reds & true oranges, or with khaki + denim combos.

I've followed you over here from the other thread Brenda... So glad my shoe talking points didn't offend in any way! I'm passionate about the shoes!

Nina Garcia also lists Vans on her 100 list, but like some of the other posters I feel they can be harder to wear. I would get them only in a sober solid color and leave the checkerboards to the 7th grade skate rats.

These are the fashion sneakers i currently own: a pair of Boden's 'plimsoles' which are a lot like cons, in dalmation print pony hair (tan + black dots + cream suede captoe = a surprisingly neutral shoe!); a solid khaki-brown pair of Sanuks, which look a lot like Vans but are more unstructured (these are BIG in Hermosa Beach, where we spend a week or so every summer... I think our whole family has them at this point... they also do a lot of lovely subtle prints, much better than Vans IMHO); and a newly purchased pair of Kork-Ease cork & nude converse style sneakers.

If your feet seek arch support, buy a good quality gel liner. I love converse, but now I tend to look for alternatives. Elisabeth is right; the black short cons with the captoe seem to flatter everyone, much the same way as a captoe or Chanel ballet flat does. It just has a lot of graphic appeal and a wonderful classic styling which supports or even elevates a lot of simple, classic clothing looks.

Show us what you get! L

I'd try them in person - I don't consider Vans exactly supportive or comfy, although I've owned many pairs since 1982 Some styles are considerably cushier than others, as well. Never worn Cons, beyond trying on a pair in store, so I can't say how they compare.

I wouldn't have given these a second look, but my son has been wearing them, and now I'm noticing them out and about and they are growing on me. I've seen some women look really cute in them. I even saw a gal (granted she was 21) wearing a pair of red Tom's with a dress and leggings. It was a really cute look.

How about Converse with an insole? I might get shot down for saying this, but I think everyone -- male or female -- can look good in low cut black Converse sneakers. They're very casual, but they're comfortable and look great with straight or bootcut jeans.

For some reason, I think Vans look better on teenaged boys.

I prefer the ones with the laces, although I can see the practicality of slip-ons. Mind you, if I were going to go with lace-up sneakers, I'd get Converse, not Vans. I like the rubber toe cap. And they are seriously versatile.

If I were to get a pair of Vans, what should I get? Kendall Farr suggests slip-ons in one of her books, but I have no clue what would work best fashion-wise.

I'm torn between:

http://www.zappos.com/vans-cla.....sics-black
