I solved my similar dilemma recently by buying some two-tone, touchscreen leather gloves (they're dark brown/ black on the underside, & a rich tan on top).

If one of your accessories (maybe 2) already contain more than one brown shade in them, then maybe it would not look out of place if one of your other accessories is only one shade of tan (which is a little 'off', compared to the rest of the look)?

Unfrumped, that is true: grey, especially pearl grey or just a bit darker, smoke grey, does marry well with camels. It's a good solution!

Allison, thank you! It DOES help. So getting one colour, but different shades would work then, like what we call in French a camaieu (translated as a "monochrome motif" but I am not satisfied with this as this camaieu is not necessarily monochrome... ). Anyhow I get you. And will try.

Julie, I am not horrified at all by the different shades of red in the pictures. Au contraire. But I would make the belt's shade even more present in the outfit, like a punch on a punch of colour... IYKWIM? You just made me realize that I readily embrace "imperfection" with vivid colours, and not with neutrals, especially tans... and I wonder why... Julie, YOU are MY fashion therapist now

Yes indeedy, what Allison said, I would add that "tonal" to me means just what you were originally asking about - colors that "almost" match. I don't sweat it. In fact, I ***really*** like it, but I used to hate it. Weird.

Here's an example of me wearing different shades of red, (horrors):
http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....ving-at-mo

Hi Krishnidoux
Re tonal - If I am wearing several items in the same colour I keep the contrast mostly low and the colours just either darker or lighter than each other, as opposed to a totally different shade of the tan. Boots - I do wear a greater contrast - darker. Hope this helps.

I'm following with interest & similar issues of maybe ending up with accessories I don't like together so then I look for more but i dont want 1bag/1 outfit wardrobe. Want more universal pieces. Some of the comments that resonate are the warm vs cool tans-- true taupe goes in a different direction from camel, cognac; and the comments on going to a third color. Gray especially, which is weird because it should be " cool" but can combine with tan or black or both. Kind of like denim. I'm exploring
more of that and then colors like burgundy/ claret/ purple for same reason.

Suz, it's true that with you (almost) newly discovered love of taupe you would be interested in this. I like your strategy of getting print, mixed colours for accessories or at least one accessory when wearing these shades. Red... that is a good idea and I will steal it.

Texstyle, I like your more patient attitude and will think about this next time I chose a handbag. This will sound extra silly, but I am often frustrated because my purse collection is upstairs in the bedroom and boots stay downstairs in the foyer, so by the time I'm all ready to go, it can be a drag to have to undo boots, go back upstairs, struggle with which bag to choose, come back down feeling late... uh! So patience is of the essence I guess. Yes, please post pics when you can!

Julie, so you say maybe it's because my eye is not worn to the idea of "tan"?

Julie and Allison: I am struggling with the concept of "tonal" vs "neutral" vs "tan"... ! What is tonal?

I agree - tonal with neutral shades especially works. Think you can do 3 different tones of tan (especially if one is boots) but cream and grey also go well with any shade of tan. Cream and grey and tan together I mean.

Great question, Krishni, thought provoking. I love Jennifer's advice about the textures and patterns, smart!

For myself, I really like a variety of tonal items, and feel it enriches an outfit in a way that perfectly matched items doesn't accomplish. I think YLF is responsible for this shift in me, because in earlier days I would have cringed if one item's color was "off". Now I have re-labeled that "tonal" and it makes me happy. Funny.

Yes, I think one of the tricks is to keep in mind rather the tan is a cool or warm tone. Sometimes you just know when you look in the mirror. I'm trying to be more patient (or less lazy) about swapping my bag - I have several but I tend to avoid switching them out for no good reason really. Yesterday I could have easily opted for my navy blue bag (to go with my dark jeans) but I did really love the neutral palette with the python bag. I should have taken a photo. I will next time.

I am following along with interest here. I am also hoping to get more taupe accessories but have been frightened that they won't blend or meld well with one another. So far I have bought the patterned python belt (lots of tones) and booties, plus I have taupe booties and a light brown (or darker taupe) booties. And these work together. But for a bag I have just been using my black bag or red bag.

In the link you gave she makes it look quite intentional because she really has quite a range of tones and textures. Interesting.

Try adopting different textures and or patterns (leopard, cheetah, tiger,or python, lizard ) so it blends the differing colors.Or option #2 buy more accesories !
You could also take the items that need to be matched to a paint store and get some sample colors to carry with you.(may be easier to carry than to haul all the actual stuff!).

Thanks ladies! That helps.

Carole, black and tan: I must try this. Somehow in my mind I had the set idea that it was either or! Obviously not.

IA, I think this works best when you are also wearing many similar shades, or if you wear a shade the same colour as one of the accessories. Somehow I'm bothered by the shades' differences if they are too similar. Now taking some of the items shopping might be a very good idea. Or pics?

Texstyle, I think you made the right decision about the tan-taupe boots. I had the same problem than you with a camel bag too, which looked almost fake against taupe; however tan-taupe is on the cooler side, which I feel will blend well into Spring colours. I have taupe booties myself and love them. But have to rethink my whole accessories strategy.

Funny, I just changed out my bag this morning for that same reason - I was wearing two tone tan shoes, a tan belt (that did match well enough), a white top and jeans with a chocolate brown jacket - and my camel bag just seemed too golden yellow and didn't work well to my eye. I changed it to my multi-toned tan/brown/black python bag and it worked much better.

I'm shopping for boots and ordered a tan/taupe color which I love but I am trying to decide now if I should keep this color or shoot for a darker brown which would be more neutral for my fall/winter wardrobe. I can't justify more than one color of the boots and I wanted to bookend my hair which is between camel toned and tan/taupe. Since I have some gray and will get more and I expect these Frye boots to last for quite some time, I figured the taupe tone will be the better choice. Not to mention the dusty dirt won't show nearlly as much on the lighter boots.

I have the same problem, & solve it by not worrying about the pieces matching exactly. Say for example you are wearing a tan bag & camel shoes, those pieces are far away enough from one another to not look too out of place (especially if the rest of your look includes different shades within it).

Another solution would be to take some of your tan accessories with you when you go shopping, so that they are on hand if you want to compare them to any potential buys.

Over a year ago, I decided to move away from the eternal black for my accessories such as boots and handbag. So every time, I try to choose a different colour, and especially in tan or camel, since I have blond hair.

Maybe this will sound silly and rookie, but now I find myself with many "tan" items in different shades that don't match. A caramel-coloured hand bag with almost taupish footwear, camel gloves and dark beige scarf... doesn't work! I think it's because from year to year, "tan" items change shade to match the current trends. And I never buy all my accessories all at once.

So when it's time to go out, I really don't have all that much choice left, despite a big pile of accessories that could all be described as tan but are really all different colours.

On the other hand, I don't want to be matchy-matchy and sport the same shade one my feet and hands and head.

Anyone else caught with this? And any ideas how to solve the problem?

Thanks so much!
