I usually wear a 4, on occasion a 2 and I bought an XS. I did try the S and it was definitely too big. I am straight hipped and the XS fits with a little ease so the knit is not pulling at all. The waist is a smidge tighter than I would like but it's workable because the fabric has give. The weight of the knit is really nice and they are machine washable. I haven't worn them yet (need to be shortened) so no info about bagging out or how well they wash up. This a slim-fit, straight leg jean-like style with a fly front zipper and waistband with trouser hooks. The front pockets are faux but the back has regular patch pockets. </p>
