Ok. It’s only been six months since this post, and I don’t look like a kid anymore, but I still look younger than I am. I got into a covid fight with a lady who was running me over with her shopping cart. She said ‘Why would I do that to an old lady like you?’ And then she got even more mad because I really am that old and agreed that I am and then pointed out she was hitting me again right then with her cart. Cashier thought it was hilarious, ‘cuz it was

I’m late to this, but I empathize. My sister still likes to laugh about the time I, who was legal to drink, got carded and she, who is 5 years younger than me and was too young, did not. The first couple semesters I taught at university, I made sure to get to class early on the first day to get to know students, and as starting time approached, some one suggested I should sit down/move my books so I wouldn’t be in the way when the prof arrived. In each of those semesters, once classes were underway and they saw my knowledge and were required to accept my judgement, the problem generally disappeared (except for a couple hot-for-teacher types). So I think your demeanor and playing your role well are very important.

I’d say avoid the many styles popular now that borrow from young styles: chucks are not your friends, and neither are hoodies. I agree with the comments above that come down to avoiding extra “poofiness”, so no bows, frilly lace, etc. But then I think you also want to avoid things that highlight your body.

In the casual way of dressing during the pandemic, I think that leaves ankle boots, straight cuts of pants (not flared or “skinnies”), tunic-style tops, and toppers that tend toward “elegant” cuts.

I don’t think make-up is likely to help. We’ve all seen high school girls who cake it on. Wear what’s comfortable, but more does not equate to older.

I agree with the above that looking pulled-together can help, but would caution that if you go all the way to “precious”, then it backfires and you look like a babydoll someone has dressed up.

I agree with the above poster who mentioned that sweet innocence is part of the appeal of a bride, and would add that as long as the person you are marrying knows you as an adult woman, then it’s all good. With no idea of your current situation, I will add that it’s possible you won’t be so worried about looking young by the time you do get married.

I also have a baby face. I have embraced that fact, people think I’m younger than I am, and there’s not much I can do about that. (I’m 39, and I still look 10 years younger, give our take.) It’s actually one of the few judgements based on looks that *seem* acceptable to share. (Don’t get me started...)

I agree with what others are saying about hair, but for me, that only means regular haircuts, not some complicated styling. (Any type of styling is complicated to me, lol) I wish I realized the importance of regular haircuts in my 20s. For me, I like my hair long, and I like ponytails - they are part of my style - so regular haircuts keep my looking like a professional adult who’s aware as opposed to an unkempt young adult. I’m not a big makeup fan, that also couldn't be something for me to do to look older - it really would have seemed like a kid playing dress up to me. So I encourage you to be true to your style.

Since you look young for your age, you can’t dress “appropriately for your age and your appearance” - they are too different. Make a conscious decision to dress for your age, and the people who see you regularly will stop seeing the juxtaposition after awhile. For example, I didn’t participate in dress down days my entire first year at my job. I knew it would send the wrong message. I also wore a blazer once a week in my 20s (Few of my colleagues wear blazers, mostly only admins, so that helped me send the message I wanted to send).

One of the harder aspects of dressing for my age in my 20s was saying a hard no on certain styles that I did like, but knew would look too juvenile on me- not fair, perhaps, but a way I felt I could control it.

You do have my sympathy, it is hard to be judged based on how you look. Hang in there!

Lots of good comments here. I have dealt with the same. When I was 16 and old enough to drive a car, a waitress at Perkins gave me a coloring placemat and a crayon while my mom and I waited for our food! I still have a childlike face, but now that I'm 47, I'm no longer mistaken for being a lot younger than I am.

I think that hairstyle is important--definitely give some time to thinking about that. You might want to consult with your stylist about it to get some really good, unbiased input. Or if you are brave enough to post a picture here, we can help you with suggestions. :)

I agree with April that anything frilly or with bows or puffy sleeves, or mary jane shoes, is going to send you in a direction you don't want.

I think another poster mentioned "French chic." I would check that out too. I have found that that style works well to balance out "cuteness."

I have had luck with adding some hard-edge elements to my style, specifically leather and studs. I would look for a leather moto jacket that you can use as a topper (even when you're dressed up, the right moto jacket can work). You could look for shoes that have studs on them--that is an easy way to toughen things up a bit.

I think for evening, a smoky eye with a nude lip would look great on you. For daytime, keep things more neutral and simple. In general, if you do an amazing eye look, keep the lips simple and not bold. If you want an amazing lip look, keep the eyes very understated.

I had the same thing (not so much anymore now I'm 35 ;)). I used to think more formal clothes like button-downs etc were the answer, but right now I think what generally distuingishes teens from twenty- and thirty- somethings (where I live) is grooming:
- having a proper haircut with some, if even minimal styling each morning (so no ponytails or plain worn long hair (past shoulders)
- a signature beauty and accessory style, which may again be minimal

Edit: please don't worry about your wedding. I think brides in their twenties always look so young and sweetly innocent, it's a special day that makes you glow with the energy of youth ;).

What April said.
Hairstyle--not sure what change if any because it is so individual re: features and hair type, and you might have to experiment, but at least hair grows! Point is your hairstyle, glasses if you wear them, are constants so could have the biggest impact.
I don't like to suggest makeup if you aren't a makeup person because I think folks should feel free to have a no-makeup face. But I agree that if you use it, very understated is likely to look more grown-up rather than high-school eye makeup type thing.
For clothing, possibly think elegant, simple. Doesn't have to be all black! Kind of young French woman, to use an over-used style moniker! Doesn't have to be expensive but you might be looking in directions that "kids" would not, so explore other brands (this is much harder in COVID times, though.. Excellent fits. Things need to fit well where they should, be no-too-tight where they should, enough length.
If you are working you might think of the "dress for the job you want" where you dress a notch up. However, what that actually looks like might be different for "baby face". For some people a suit or blazers makes that statement but the exact interpretation may vary, else some people look like a 12-year-old wearing a suit, and so some different mix of workwear works better on them.
Of course at some point for now "baby face" is just you, and you don't want to sweat it too much. Also you are lucky because if you DO come up with some good fashion "disguise" tricks you can use those when you need to and wear anything you want at other times (for example, skirt lengths).
The bottom line is that it might not be so different from a regular style goal of "be the best you can be" for your budget, work or school roles--finding what works for your coloring and body type and "style persona" and best fit quality at your price points. These then become dressing and shopping skills that are "ageless".

This might be incredibly obvious, but avoid anything that looks like what little girls wear: no Mary Jane shoes, no puffed sleeves, no twirly or poufy skirts (sorry), no pink and purple confections, nothing that resembles Hanna Andersson for adults, no bows.

Oh, I remember when I was 23 and got a powerful job where I was responsible for hundreds of people, many of them old enough to be my parents or even grandparents ... Well, being in charge you have to look the part. ;-)

Some tips and suggestions:
● In order not to look like a child, you probably need to wear some makeup, at least dark mascara and visible lipstick. If you don't like lipstick, wear a coloured lipgloss, or use this trick: Apply red lipstick, blot so that just SOME colour is left, and apply Vaseline.
● Choose hairstyles that are shorter than shoulder length. If your hair is long, wear it up and in a neat, grown-up way (not just a ponytail).
● Instead of jeans, shorts and other casual bottoms, wear dress pants and knee length or midi skirts and dresses.
● Avoid plain tees, graphic tees and spaghetti straps tops and dresses.
● Collared items like blazers and button-front shirts exude authority. Lightweight (not bulky or too casual-looking) knitwear will also be fine.
● instead of sneakers, flip-flops, fabric shoes, etc., wear adult style shoes like pumps, block heels or wedges and choose materials like leather, suede and patent.
● Avoid childish or cheap-looking accessories. Try silk scarves, pearls or gold or silver jewellery. Instead of charms and sweet little pendant hearts, try chains, knots, etc.
● Use pastels for tops only and combine them with darker colours. There is no need to dress in black. Try other grown-up colours like teal, burgundy, champagne, toffee/bronze, deep purple, charcoal, rust, mustard, olive, bottle green, taupe and navy --depending on your colouring.

Oh it happened to me too. When I was 24 and qualified I was asked if I had left high school. And when I was 37 I was thought to be about 25- that one, I liked! Now I am mistaken for up to 8 years older than I am which is unpleasant in a different way.
I don’t have much help to give I’m so sorry. Dress as an adult and just politely say “I’m fully qualified” or something like that?

I feel your pain. I was a young (20 yr old who could not legally buy a drink) when a graduated college and taught sixth graders bigger than I was. Buy adult clothes. You don’t want to be seen in teeny bopper clothes or buy from the children’s section even if you can. I liked my long hair down for weekends but wore it up to look older. I wore heels but this was years ago. Dress up more and wear accessories. Some makeup ( polish) is a good idea. You don’t say what you do for work, but you do not want to look like the boss’s daughter. You want to look capable and that you know what you are doing. Time will fly by and you will look older (and be older) before you know it.

Hi there! I was in the same boat until the last couple of years (I'm 27). What helped me the most in my early 20s, I think, was finding a hairstyle that suited me. I went with bob length for a while and ultimately decided short worked for me. Something that frames or elongates your face might work well for you. Doesn't necessarily have to be short hair, but some layering can add more angles and reduce roundness. I hope this helps because I KNOW how frustrating it can be.

As a 22 year old who gets mistaken for a 13-15 year old, I'm finding it difficult to find dressy clothing that suits my age and my appearance. It's true even for my daily outfits, but I'm starting to accept that dressing like an older teen is the best that I can do. So far my only solution is wearing all black with low heels, but that's incredibly boring after 2 years. I've tried makeup, but I don't think it works for me that well (in the sense that it doesn't make me look older, just.. more polished). It's far into the future but I'm nervous thinking about how I'd look in a wedding dress, even thinking about being my friend's maid of honor sent me into a fashion spiral *extra dramatic sigh*
