I enjoyed this. I wish I had been that wise at 44. Me, I was newly single, unemployed, without a dog, cat or child. Hello depression? And there was no YLF to cheerfully distract me! I was a mess.

I laughed out loud at this one. Which may be a bit mean spirited of me.

Love that link, Anna; thanks for posting it. I so agree with FD's remarks about it being important for those of us who choose to age without major interventions to make sure we stay visible and articulate so younger women realize that there are choices and that not every older woman secretly longs to look younger.

A fun read. Priorities and points of view change. LOL, Una, I had the same thoughts about that song. Does it mean that when you turn 70, your SO will drop you for a 27 year old? When our grandson was born someone told my DH, " You know what this means? You are sleeping with a Grandmother!"

OMG, Angie - no worries! Different strokes (or horses for courses!)... I didn't think it was particularly brilliant, just worth sharing for opinions. And I did find some things to ponder about aging gracefully and what it means to me.

Angie. I don't think I represented it as compelling! Yes, it's cliched, as I said - all discussions about age tend to be cliched. But I'm on the tipping point of 50 and find there is always some grain of truth in cliches - that is why they become cliches, right?

And this rang utterly true for me:

"There are no soul mates. Not in the traditional sense, at least. In my 20s someone told me that each person has not one but 30 soul mates walking the earth. (“Yes,” said a colleague, when I informed him of this, “and I’m trying to sleep with all of them.”) In fact, “soul mate” isn’t a pre-existing condition. It’s an earned title. They’re made over time."

Because the test really is TIME. There's a romantic pop song on the radio with the line "I will love you till you're 70". At 25, that would have been forever. Now I hear it and think "Quitter!".

I'm on the cusp of entering the 50s, and I have to confess I'm giving just a little bit of side-eye to people who sum up decades they haven't even gone halfway through yet. Yeah, I chuckled a little at the final bits of the essay, but I think the whole idea can be summed up as: Stop worrying about your age, and stop worrying about how you might be perceived.

But oh yeah, definitely don't buy jeans a size (or more) too small. This way lies unhappiness. Ask me how I know.

I'm a wet blanket I'm afraid - and almost 45. I didn't find the article compelling - perhaps it wasn't supposed to be and I missed the point, Una? Clichéd, and trying to be funny. I had a sense of humour failure.

40 really is the old age of youth. I didn't know Victor Hugo said that, but he's right. However, I'd rather think of myself as a young middle-aged person than an old young person. ;-)

I wonder if the maturity/wisdom chasm happens after menopause? I've heard more than one 50+ woman call it liberating.

I will be turning 44 soon but I don't have any children (1 older cat and 2 Maine Coon Kittens). I feel like I'm not living the same juggling act. But I do miss 8 hours of sleep - it isn't kids, stress, or work -- it's my damn bladder! The line "The existing literature treats the 40s as transitional. Victor Hugo supposedly called 40 “the old age of youth.”" -- I'm so on board with this. I feel like I am a young adult (okay, I know there are no adults) because those 50+ persons seem to look at us as youngsters as if they somehow have gained tremendous wisdom in the decades from 50 to 90. But I do feel like I am going to be crossing over some maturity/wisdom chasm in the not so distant future.

Oh, I like this woman. She's the one who wrote the book 'Bringing Up Bébé', which made me laugh out loud (My sister-in-law is French, and I started out raising my daughter in California, so I've seen firsthand both the French and the American ways of parenthood) and also question my motives as a parent. In that book, as well as in this article, I agree with most (but not all) of what she says.

Best laugh-out-loud bit: 'There are no soul mates. Not in the traditional sense, at least. In my 20s someone told me that each person has not one but 30 soul mates walking the earth. (“Yes,” said a colleague, when I informed him of this, “and I’m trying to sleep with all of them.”)'

Truest bit: 'Eight hours of continuous, unmedicated sleep is one of life’s great pleasures. Actually, scratch “unmedicated.”'

The bit about wearing black to meet someone in the fashion industry seems like a good idea. Angie's going to disagree with me, and yes, yes, I know it makes our under eye circles look worse -- but black is insouciant. ;-)
