When I lived in Argentina (long ago) the country was 60% Italian descent, which explains a lot about the food and culture. Many other nationalities lived there--English (probably not so many post-Falklands (Malvinas) war, German, and other European countries, many post WWII refugees. BA had a large Jewish population. A century ago BA was the "Paris of South America."

Anna, you can do very well there without eating beef. Endless pasta varieties are available as well as chicken and some seafood. DH and I have been back a half a dozen times. One trip to Bariloche, (beautiful scenery, Mountains and skiing) Mendoza (wine country) and Mar del Plata (Beach City.) Unfortunately the nation has been plagued by incompetent and corrupt governments one after another. It seems to me the last time I was there was 2004--can't believe it was so long ago. We did a cruise from Valparaiso around Cape Horn to Uruguay and several Argentine ports. This is a cruise I can recommend.

We went to Iguazu once but stayed on the Brazilian side. I understand the Argentine side is the more spectacular.

DH and I have an emotional connection to the country and many places there. I doubt we'll go again--we still haven't been to Australia and New Zealand and think it's time we went there.

I've wanted to go because Hello Wine! But I don't eat red meat & I'm afraid it seems so beef focused.

Really fascinating viewpoint--thanks, rae! I've also been to Rome (and will be going back in about a month). It's funny because if you are doing tango, obviously BsAs is MECCA. And people I know (like retirees), spend up to a couple of months living there part of each year, studying.

I definitely have to go. But I also want to go to Chile! And Brazil.

Thanks, Rae. I might have a chance to go for work (I was supposed to go last year but it was cancelled). I will take your advice anytime!

A couple of people mentioned on my Fashion Report that they might consider BsAs as a future destination, so I thought I'd share my photos so that you might get a better idea of the area.

The waterfall photos are from another city, Puerto Igazu. We had to take an extra flight there - about 2 hours of travel each way. But! Very worth it. If I were to do it again, I'd spend more time here.

My 2 cents on BsAs: if you have been to Rome and have limited opportunities for International travel, you can probably skip Buenos Aires... it is very, very similar in feel, just on a slightly smaller scale and without the Colosseum. Lots of Roman-type pizza, pasta... even the same general vibe going from the touristy center to the upscale residential areas with the pretty parks. Of course, if you love Tango or Argentine wines, that is another case.

We didn't get to go here, but looking back it would might have been cool to do Bariloche and Puerto Igazu. Bariloche was recommended highly by a client of mine - great Euro vibe in South America, only Swiss instead of Italian.

Hope this might help someone in the future!
