Interesting to read! It sounds like the capsule concept is working for you.

I agree with your numbers of tops vs bottoms, and outerwear.

Hi, I have been away for a long weekend. Of course I love this post!
I counted my January number of items for you: 29 different clothing items and 11 pairs of shoes. Remember this is high summer, equivalent to your July.
So, that’s 40 different items in a month. As you know I have a larger number of wardrobe items to choose from. I obviously still like variety!

I am glad we don't have to stage a coat intervention! You live in Canada, coats are all you see for a long time. It makes sense that in a smaller wardrobe things wear out faster and you replace them. It is the smaller wardrobe way of not becoming bored and feeling your wardrobe is stale. Wear out and replace with something new. That is a sustainable goal both for the planet and your spirit!

PS - for anyone following, I've started pinning ideas of what I mean when I think about adding colour and pretty details; link in the original post ... what seems to be trending here are:

- high contrast but delicate prints
- colours like pink, blush, deep red, deep blue (which I avoid in winter but enjoy in spring/summer with white bottoms, light blues, etc.
- t-shirts mostly, but with interesting sleeves and softer lines/details
- one styling detail is the print combined with a pastel/soft pretty colour - the example are too dressy for me but I'll keep in mind to apply in a more casual way, potentially

SQUEE! I love a good numbers post! I was nodding along with Sara and Carla - it is tricky to find interest with plain neutrals when you aren't adding scarves, toppers, etc. I've been thinking about that a lot as I plan for summer - adding texture and different colors (since I tend to happily gravitate to the same neutral bottoms on repeat) are going to be top of mind. YES! Let go of the outerwear guilt!!

It sounds like you are gaining really valuable insight with tracking. I am excited that you are going to continue and hope you will keep updating with how it's going.

Sorry I disappeared, but appreciate everyone's thoughts and comments!

LaPed - yes, that's it. I know the joke is old, but I am Bernie with the winter coats. I think it's because they are expensive AND I don't like them - so it's painful to spend on them! I don't need much variation within a year as it's also easy to overload the hall closet - but changing up the jacket every year or two seems reasonable - as does switching the winter accessories annually.

Jenava/FI - yes, FI nailed it. I took a specific selection of items, and then added a few. I will say there is not much in the holding area that I could add, so this is the vast majority of my winter wardrobe - I have a few items tucked away that I'm not feeling right now. Jenava, your spring pieces are beautiful! I also have a few 'spring only' pieces, and these are purely for happiness as our spring is so short. Enjoy them!

Carla - you are so insightful, and I value your questions so much, as you encourage me to THINK (for myself ha!) ... and clearly your processes for wardrobe-building are Jedi-level based on your wardrobe! I appreciate your ideas and I did just create a 2021 Pinterest board that featured a lot of black and white/dark navy and white pattern - so this is definitely on my radar. I also just pilfered a pair of pants from DS that he has grown out of (!!!!) so will try them - they have a subtle check.

cat2 "maximize the freshness of a small number of items" absolutely nails it! Thank you!

Helena, I am in the same boat as you regarding outerwear. I expect the puffer I bought five years ago to still look pristine, even though it's getting ~100 wears per year at least. Its cost per wear at this point is far lower than many pieces in my closet, yet it still feels extravagant to add another parka...

Your observations about the right kind of variety are so interesting. Fewer tops, but in a wider range of colours, makes perfect sense to me. It's so easy to over-duplicate essentials...

Jenava, nice pallet, mixing together soft colors with some stronger ones! If you search Helena’s forum posts, you’ll see that she set out a number of items to use and then has added a couple more things as she’s gone along. You didn’t ask me, but I’ll answer anyway: left to my own devices, I don’t wear more than this either. I tend to cycle through 15-20 items for a few weeks, then shift to another batch, so in two months I probably wear 30-40 items. How do you do it?

I've been wanting to take time to do more analysis of my closet as Spring inches closer but just haven't had the time! Last night I took out a bunch of stuff that I deemed Spring Only (a few of them below), set it on my bed, nodded in satisfaction, and put it back in my closet. haha.

Do you LIMIT yourself to that number of items, or is that just the number of items you ended up wearing in 2 months? It seems like small number to me. I'm curious now how many items I wear in a month!

@ Helena - was just enquiring about your thoughts on the matter. You hit what I was thinking about in your response to Sarah - without that third element of a topper or a scarf, there has to be something else going on to keep a basic outfit of top and bottom stylistically interesting. This is a ‘problem’ with summer outfits, that I hadn’t thought applies to winter outfits - but with the SAH lifestyle, I’m seeing it does when it’s just a top and a bottom!

My thoughts on the matter are that a a statement item combined with a classic item provides oomph! Prints (statement) provide more interest within the traditional silhouettes I like (body skimming t-shirts and sweaters, and classic button downs) - especially if the bottom is a solid neutral essential. If I’m prepared to go with interesting (statement) silhouettes, or non neutral (statement) colours there is something else to tantalize the eye and pattern isn’t necessary.

Idea: would you do patterned bottoms to get your neutral essential tops into rotation? A subtle plaid or check?

I have had month long business trips where I was trying to maximize the freshness of a small number of items. I found maximizing variation in my tops as much as I could helpful— including different colors, different trim, different fabrics or knits, prints, slightly different cuts, etc.

Makes total sense to me that you’d want your different tops to actually be different. I think if they were the same except for one factor, you’d get tired of them a lot faster, because you’d feel like you were always wearing the same thing. Not saying you need to swing wildly out of your lifestyle lane, just that I think your more variety in fewer tops analysis sounds right on the money.

I am slowly learning your investing in outerwear lesson; life is meaningfully easier if I can rotate though outerwear pieces, rather than being jammed up if my only puffer gets grubby. I have been buying a new piece each year; this year was a new raincoat, last year a spring weight puffer, and the year before a winter weight puffer.

Sarah, yes - I think the neutral tops are just not doing it for me. One thing that I think came up in another conversation was since we are not wearing lots of scarves, makeup, etc that would add interest to a neutral top, they aren't as appealing. In general, 'one and done' interest is appealing to me, as I'm not into layering etc. - and I'm a bit tired of the uber-basic-minimal look that has been everywhere the last few years (which is beautiful on others! just not for me, right now).

I agree too that one top can't do it all - I might have similar tops in one element (say, colour) but that do different things (e.g. a warm sweater, a tshirt, a blouse, or something like that). For example, I could duplicate my deep reds if the tops were different otherwise (e.g. in function) ... again just hypothesizing here and happy to hear counter points!!

Thank you so much everyone! Angie, can you believe it - I'm not hand-wringing (for now at least ha!), hooray! :D

Carla, that's a really good question, and I'm wary of answering too quickly, as I think it's an evolving situation given lockdowns, as well as the upcoming seasonal transition (even though we've got loads of winter left, hopefully only a month more of really deep winter *crosses fingers*), and I think my style is evolving too.

The common denominator of my most-worn tops seems to be that they both have some element in interest (e.g. the balloon sleeve, the cableknit texture and colour, the burgundy t) AND they fit a real lifestyle need (the ts are nice enough to transition from yoga mat to grocery store to restaurant; the cableknit is nice and warm for really cold days).

A small amount of duplication with the balloon sleeves (i.e. one neutral one colour) seems to work; on the other hand, my ribbed sweaters, I only wear one of the three on any kind of regular basis. (I know the black would get worn more if I was going out in the evenings, so that can't be fully judged at the moment). But suffice it to say, a variety of colours in a single style doesn't seem to be the best approach for me.

As to silhouette, pattern, etc - I'm not entirely sure! I do feel that I've duplicated a lot of basic pieces in the past on the basis of the 'perfect capsule', and I'm leaving that thinking behind ... and I'm also observing that things I'm drawn to usually have some element of subtle interest to them. For example, I noticed an outfit on tv the other day that I loved - it was a simple burgundy crewneck top, but it had a slight bell sleeve and a bit of pointelle detail - I just loved it and have since noticed those small details do really appeal to me. So that's more a hypothesis than a declaration, I'd say, but one I wouldn't mind playing with.

What do you think? Does that make sense ...?

100% here for the analysis! This was fascinating. It sounds like you are on a good path and I like your ease with it.

Like Runcarla I was also interested in the "less tops, more variety" comment. I've found that for me, I sometimes wind up with 2 or 3 similar items that nevertheless don't play exactly the same role in my wardrobe (maybe the proportions are right with one style of pants but off with another; or the sleeves of this top only layer well under some cardigans, etc.). Part of me longs for "the one top to rule them all" but part of me thinks that searching for such a top would be more effort (and potentially in vain) than just managing a slightly larger closet inventory.

Also, I'm curious about those "supposedly essential but apparently not" tops that have only gotten a couple of wears. I'm wondering if they are neutrals? Because if you're happily wearing just a few pairs of neutral pants on repeat, you're likely using your tops to bring color to your outfits -- so it makes sense that your neutral tops would get less wear during a season when you're interested in more color.

Your numbers look similar to mine, as do your # of wear patterns. Monthly I seem to rotate 5 different bottoms, and 12 different tops. Also, when I get something new (like your faux-flys) They get some early heavy wear! (I’m not posting many WIW atm because I’ve worn the new Mango jeans 8 times - just wearing different tops!)

I have a few questions about the ‘less tops, more variety’ thought. Are there any common denominators in your tops? What about duplication? Would you prefer tops in the same shape/style but with pattern, possibly texture? Or, do you think same colour/solid - but different silhouette and fabric?

I say, what? 35 items? Like, 35 per drawer?! Lol. I’m so in trouble. I broke a storage bin and have been busy in the closet... I’m so in trouble! I have four animal print cardigans and they’re all different and yet the same... I’m wondering if I can bear to part with any, and am not getting an answer...

35 pieces is more or less my seasonal wardrobe, each season has its own challenges and I can only stretch a few pieces. As we are still in lockdown here, I am aware that I am using a very limited number of pieces, which are on constant repeat. I am in the same situation with the trousers and jackets, but again this is due to the lockdown and I am keeping them all for now.

The earrings are lovely, it's a fab gift !

All very interesting for me. As you know I am tracking since January and some of our numbers are similar. Favourite pants and sweaters got 7 to 9 wears in a month, which is really a third of the month. So we reach for our favourites over and over again. My coats and shoes also get worn alot, I will reach 30 wears in Jan and Feb easily. I am not tracking shoes but I know I am basically rotating 2 pairs mostly currently.
