Yeah, and I find Quicksilver rather overpriced even when I go overseas! To me, it's just a standard surfie label, nice but nothing to get excited about.

I think it's a combination of two factors... 1) it genuinely costs more to ship to and around Australia because of the vast distances involved, and the lower volumes due to a smaller population means the economies of scale aren't as good.

2) Retailers here haven't embraced the internet, and I think many of them aren't even aware that they're competing with overseas stores. I wish they'd join us in the 21st century.

We recently had a bit of controversy when one of the large furniture and tech retailers was campaigning to have more taxes added to goods bought online, because he didn't think it was fair to him. And then it came out that he was buying his stock from overseas and just marking it up hugely while paying low wages to his staff!

Thanks for posting this Anna! Over the last couple of years I've bought more stuff from OS, whether Ebay or places like Shopbop. You should see how much Miz Mooz shoes go for here, it's ridiculous.

I do fear that it's going to come to an end, like maybe the government will pass a law so we can't shop internationally, or we have to pay extra levies for doing so. There's little incentive to buy pretty much everything I like (makeup, shoes, clothes, perfume, books!) here otherwise.

On the other hand, although USA has created a society that seems to be geared around shopping and making it as accessible as possible, we do have a lot that you don't, like free universal health care, higher wages, better unemployment benefits etc (not that ours are truly adequate, but they are closer to it). I'm not trying to talk Australia vs USA, rather, I'm saying a society can do well in one area sometimes only through doing less well in another. What is the tradeoff, in other words.

Crazy, isn't it? I feel a slight guilt every time I purchase OS about the effect on our trade deficit but what the heck, I am not going to buy Oz if it's ridiculously overpriced. Oh, and quality is so much better, in Landsend tees and jeans, for example. I even buy dressmaking fabric from the US, despite the freight costs. I buy Australian occasionally in designer recycle boutiques but I balk at paying full tote odds.

Now I know why some of you order from the US. But it still doesn't explain my $90 AU surf hoodie from Quicksilver (which I believe is an Australian company)
