When I was young I did not pay attention to fashion or style. Or go clubbing. In those days it seemed like you had to choose between smart or pretty/cute. I was mostly concerned with looking “professional” which meant a bit frumpy. But I’ve always dressed for comfort albeit perhaps more constricting than many women would prefer. But that could also be about my proportions. Waistlines and tights rarely bother me.

My latest hack is fleece lined tights under a midaxi pleather skirt with a facing rather than a waistband. I can even add slip shorts. The skirt just sits higher as the layers underneath get thicker. Plus, its length and boots or booties cover up the somewhat odd look of the fleece. This Californian would never have known about slip shorts and fleece tights without YLF!

All my life that has been a wonder what sort of thermals those girls were wearing and why they did not look cold. I am not used to cold weather at all - and so are layered like a Michelin Man in true cold weather which I only experience when travelling.

Sloper--thanks for the link. I think an "apres-ski" look is a good way to go for fashionable winter gear.
Kate--that is certainly a way to go, isn't it? Making outerwear a priority for fashion.
RobinF--it is so nice to be warm and comfortable.
Joy--that spring weather can be so nebulous. I was caught last year in an outdoor military service funeral that got very windy. I had a thin coat--some people had nothing.

Lisa--that is interesting--I am the opposite. I do so well with skirts and dresses, and people always think I'm stylish when I wear them. Maybe I should buy more of them.
Jenni NZ--they do make those thermal tops incredibly thin, don't they? I had a job where the back storage area, where we needed to be maybe 25% of the time, was not heated. I was always fine because of layering with stuff like that.
Nuancedream--right there with you--I think I always had a coat. And I never understood the city girls who wore cute little bomber jackets in the winter.
Sisi--thanks. The sweater thing--I do that, too, with most sweaters. Unless I know it will be cold, in which case I layer as you say. It would be interesting to find out who layers, and who just wears a sweater bare.
Gail--"your pride keeps you warm..."I could say that about my friend in this post. Some people really do care more about the "look."

JAileen--I have heard of these down coats--will have to check them out.
Irina--I suppose I am thinking more of bodycon dresses for the Italian women, though mini is a flexible term in terms of length. And yes, being driven is worth it if you spend less time in the cold.
Suz--that is interesting that you put so much effort into fashion and practicality together. Where I come from, about the coolest thing a person can wear is straight ski/hiking etc. clothes. Just all practicality. But aiming a little higher for fashion is inspiring.
Angie--you certainly do promote the idea that heels aren't a necessity, which opens up an avenue of thought for many women.
Sloper--right there with you. It always seemed we had great weather in the fall, then all of a sudden on Halloween there would be a big chill that forced you to wear a coat.

I could not afford the cute coat so went without with the dress showing only l was cold. Easter morning calls for an Easter dress, right. But it was cold outside for a sun rise service on a hill top. Too cold for an Easter dress I learned the hard way. I bought the cute coats with accessories to keep warm. Ever since. It is also windy on hilltop or mountain. So I dressed warmly.

Certainly as a young woman I sacrificed some comfort for style. No longer, but in cool/cold weather I have no problems, because I adore coats and have a big selection. My coats, footwear and accessories are stars of the show, and I’m always so happy to wear them.

Funny and interesting post! Yes, certain people are apparently brave enough to face discomfort and cold for the sake of fashion . Or they simply do not feel the discomfort and do not run cold. Who knows? Years ago I always saw a girl at the train station who wore stiletto heels all the time. Winter - stiletto heel boots. Spring and Fall - stiletto heel pumps . Summer - stiletto heel sandals. She looked happy and at ease whereas my spine, legs and feet cringed just looking at her. I have a high school friend who, in Winter, wears sweaters on the skin - no cami or tee underneath, just the bra. I would die. To answer your question I did wear high heel shoes and tight clothing when I was younger but I did not feel any discomfort. I started to appreciate more comfort in my mid-thirties. As for the cold, I have always run very cold and since ever I bundle up in Winter, the hell with being fashionable!
(And surely someone was keeping Hepburn's coat during the photoshooting!).

My feet most definitely have suffered for style and now I'm trying to stay out of the podiatrist's office. I was never one to wear wispy, spaghetti strap dresses in cold weather to go clubbing when I was younger. Whatever I wore had sleeves and I was sporting a proper coat that covered my butt. It wasn't exciting, but at least my teeth weren't chattering due to the cold.

Not too much. I could also cope with some high heels as a young woman, never those really really high stilettos. I don’t like being cold but have generally worked around it-secret woollen leggings underneath a ball skirt was one I remember from the year 2000! And a shortsleeved thermal top underneath as well which I then went and took off in the ladies’ bathroom as we got hotter with dancing!

I'm with others that I suffered for fashion when I was younger. Because I'm short I always wore heels, and while some of my foot problems were structural all those years of wearing heels didn't help.

I also remember going without a coat to clubs because there was no coat check. The walk from the clubs to the car were always rough in the winter months.

I have also repeatedly tried skirts and dresses in the past until I finally realized I just prefer pants and jeans more. I haven't owned a skirt in years and I own very few dresses. They pretty much just take up space in my closet. I should probably go through them and donate the dresses at this point. If I need a fancy outfit I always prefer trousers instead.

Ah, the fashionable young!

I used to make all kinds of accommodations, for sure. Too thin dresses, shoes that pinched or made me wobble, snug waistbands, foregoing hat or the proper weight of coat in order to look dressy enough for the occasion -- I could go on. Iin high school, I refused to wear a hat or scarf in cold weather. And it was really cold in winter where I grew up and often snowy and I would go outside with wet hair in that weather.

Some of this was also to do with money. I'd have bought the full length long coat if I could afford it. I'd have bought a better pair of boots/ shoes if I could source and afford it. But I couldn't.

Practicality is much more important to me now. And luckily, I have greater means, so I can buy things that keep me warm (or cool) most of the time. But I will say that the basic dilemma remains the same. I'm never only about practicality. If I were, I would just wear gear all the time. But I want to look stylish, too. So it's always a dance, a balance. I'm always searching for the fashionable item that will also fulfill my practical needs.

I own two packable puffer coats. Those things are magic for situations like the one you describe.

Italian women in mini skirts? Where, dare I ask? Haven’t seen that many in Italy :)
To answer your question - yes and no.

Yes, I used to wear uncomfortable shoes, too thin dresses under a coat in a winter time, itchy sweaters and underwire bras when I was younger. To name a few sacrifices in the name of fashion. And there were many!

No more. I wear puffers, outwear that I have never liked. I made my peace with it.

When I get cold, it’s very hard for me to warm up again. So if it’s cold (and it was 13F a few mornings ago) I dress for it. If you don’t want to deal with a bulky coat, I would take a down jacket that you can stuff into a sack or its pocket. My Patagonia Nanopuffs aren’t down but do stuff. The other option would be to wear a coat that is so awesome that you don’t want to take it off. For me, that would be my red duffle coat. :)

I went out Halloween with a much younger friend downtown. Driving there, I noticed she had no coat--just her summery Anne of Green Gables dress (her costume). I asked if she had a coat, and looking out the window, as if to some glamorous future I could not possibly imagine, she said:

"no. I will be tough."

I threw on my puffer when we parked and said, "well, I guess I have this thing." (Luckily the club had plenty of booth space to toss it down.) We walked quickly several blocks there, while she distracted herself by loudly discussing what she thought about each window we passed.

I have noticed a tendency for stylish women to eschew comfort. My uncle's mother wore heels daily until the doctors forced her to stop. Italian women scamper down the street in mini-dresses with no purses to be seen--where is their money? Their lipstick? Their enzyme capsules for all that marinara sauce?

Cold-climate stuff falls into this category. Mostly women (and men) dress warmly, but occasionally sacrifice it all for a streamlined look.

Do you do this? Have you done this?

I hate the feeling of carrying around a bulky coat, or stuffing it into a corner. (Coat checks are not always available.) I feel like this situation comes up more than you would think.

A humor post, but also a brain-storming session. How to deal with winter bulk?

Audrey Hepburn never carried a wadded-up fleece jacket. Nor Grace Kelly, nor Joan Crawford. Pictured is Hepburn in a supposed cool climate--those are gloves. Where is her jacket? Indubitably someone is carrying out of frame.
