Mary Beth--it's true, we really do need to think about vulnerability, evening, etc. and clothing. I think the reason we are maybe not taught this way is that in the movies, books, etc. the woman has people helping her with hat boxes, holding her hand to get out of the car--in short, a world orchestrated for her to look good.

Helena--I could believe that about Ottawa--I think I have been there in March. I can't imagine standing outside without a coat. Would you say Ottawa is a dressier city overall?

And I did change the category right away when I made the post--I guess I just never erased this one. The other one got on the main forum.

Val--It is completely hard to continue to sacrifice comfort for fashion/beauty. I look longingly at my heels in the closet when I go out, but usually end up wearing some sensible booties. I also try to wear sunscreen religiously--it took me years to figure this out.

Very interesting subject, I’ve been thinking a lot about it, thank you for bringing it up
I’ve done it a lot in the past ! Especially high heels. I am more reasonable now, but still, if I’m completely honest with myself, if I don’t wear heels now is because first, I don’t want to grow bunions, second because I feel style wise it is less current, and only third - comfort. But at least comfort does enter into equation now.
I get chilly easily and this I take seriously , I can’t tough it out, especially indoors, get miserable and grumpy. If I need to spend 5 minutes outside , I can probably get through the cold and not wear a coat, but I just don’t want to take the risk that 5 minutes extend to 15.
As for the bulk of outerwear and fitting things into a small bag I have a solution - I will handle it all over to my husband when we go out he is the one who ends up carrying wallet, my lipstick, car keys etc in his pockets.
And I absolutely don’t take the risk of being outside without sun protection in warm weather. I would in a way again chose beauty over comfort, but more long term beauty - I may want to be bare shoulders and all , but will coverup to not get burned.
Sounds like I do favor looks over comfort. But there a lot of small discomforts that I will not tolerate now even if I did before. Uncomfortable underwear. Heavy/bulky bag. Tight or otherwise restrictive clothes.
I notice that my teenage daughters have completely different relationship with clothes then I had in their age - they would not tolerate any amount of discomfort. My younger , since she was about 6, does a sumo squat and rises arms up when trying on new things - not any of my jeans could pass this test ! We spend hours finding the right footwear - she wants to like it aesthetically but also be able to move freely all her toes inside.we usually end up going size up until the shoe still holds on.

Oh yes I have definitely done this. I went to university in Ottawa (I believe it is the second coldest national capital city after Ulan Batar in Mongolia, for reference). There were no winter jackets or boots for a night out ... Take a cab and then pray the line moves fast lol. These days I prioritize comfort more but I will still brave heels and an inadequate jacket for a snazzy night out, when they happen!

Bahaha, I just saw this!

In the past, I have worn heels, knowing I have several blocks of walking.

What actually weaned me off of this habit was a moment of clarity, late one night, walking back to the BF’s condo in downtown Atlanta, several blocks from my parking garage. I had on heels and a pencil skirt, and suddenly thought, “Hey, I’m an easy target. Someone could knock me down, grab my purse and laptop bag, and sprint to the nearest Marta station before I would even know what happened”. So I locked everything in my trunk, and just walked back to the condo with my keys and phone. And started keeping flat shoes in my car, to swap out.

I run cold, so if I want don’t want the bother of a coat, I try to incorporate layers into my clothing, and wear a cute scarf. But if it’s snow-level cold, I gotta wear a coat, because I don’t have an assistant standing just out of frame to carry it for me.

I went out Halloween with a much younger friend downtown. Driving there, I noticed she had no coat--just her summery Anne of Green Gables dress (her costume). I asked if she had a coat, and looking out the window, as if to some glamorous future I could not possibly imagine, she said:

"no. I will be tough."

I threw on my puffer when we parked and said, "well, I guess I have this thing." (Luckily the club had plenty of booth space to toss it down.) We walked fast several blocks there, quickly, while she distracted herself by loudly discussing what she thought about each window we passed.

I have noticed a tendency for stylish women to eschew comfort. My uncle's mother wore heels daily until the doctors forced her to stop. A gaggle of young Italian women scamper down the street in mini-dresses with no purses to be seen--where is their money? Their lipstick? Their enzyme capsules for all that marinara sauce?

Cold-climate stuff definitely falls into this category. Mostly women (and men) dress warmly, but on some occasions, sacrifice it all for a more streamlined look.

Do you do this? Would you do this? Have you done this?

I hate the feeling of carrying around a bulky coat on my arm, or stuffing it into a corner. (Coat checks are not always available.) I feel like this situation comes up more than you would think.

A humor post, but also a brain-storming session. How to deal with winter bulk?

Audrey Hepburn never carried a wadded-up fleece jacket. Nor Grace Kelly, nor Joan Crawford. Pictured is Hepburn in a supposed cool climate--those are gloves. Where is her jacket? Someone is indubitably carrying out of frame.
