Maya, I saw the exact black dress in H&M, definitely check it out! It was around $29 if I'm not mistaken.

Here is another cute one, but I can't tell how long it is. It looks very short but things are usually longer on me than they are in pictures.

http://www.6pm.com/n/p/p/7385420/c/134759.html

This one is also adorable. Wish it were about 4 inches longer I really like the overall silhouette though.

I am just not crazy about it being black. Even a charcoal gray would have been preferable. I'll keep an eye on it though.

I LOVE this dress. I hope it comes back in stock. I don't know if the empire waist and gathers (grr) are going to work, but it's one of those few dresses where it's worth a try:

Maya, VS only sells their clothing online, not in the stores.

That little black gap dress is adorable. I think it could be used also as a jumper when the weather cools down, layered over shirts and tops. Very versatile.

Thanks for the ideas, Shiny/Inge/Tanya. I should clarify: I like the idea of sack dresses but would look awful in them. I need more structure. I don't think I should bother looking at dresses online. It's going to have to be a shopping day (ugh). Besides, places like Zara and H&M do not have online shops, so who knows what I might be missing!

I think this shape would be flattering, but what a sad choice of color!

http://www.gap.com/browse/prod.....pid=594850

This is sort of a dumb question, but since I do not shop there I wouldn't know: Does Victoria's secret sell their clothes in the store, or only online?

You're right Maya, lots of dresses seem to have empire waists and/or ruching. I'm afraid it really is a matter of trial and error, and I wouldn't rule out empire cuts entirely... but after a while you get tired of trying them on, I know;-)

I absolutely adore the one Laura linked to, Tanya had great ones too, and I was actually going to suggest the last one Shiny linked to.

You said you'd consider shirt dresses without belts, sack dresses and sheaths too. Here are some more options. I know that some of these shops are teen stores, but if you like the dress and it fits, then I'd say go for it anyway.

I was about to suggest VS but Tanya beat me to it!

Also keep an eye on GAP. I bet they will come out with just the style you are looking for eventually. This one is close, but the scarf is attached:

http://www.gap.com/browse/prod.....pid=594847

And what about this? It also comes in solid colors:

http://www.gap.com/browse/prod.....=585678002

Maya I'm with you on hating summer clothing. Florals and pastels and flimsy fabrics - ugh!!! I know you haven't had the best luck with the tailor that you went to for your jeans, but maybe its worth asking how much a plain dress or skirt would cost to make, especially if you already have a design in mind.

Years ago I was after a very plain knee length linen a-line skirt that I could wear travelling - no trimmings, no ribbons, no frills etc. I convinced my Mum to make me one and she said it only took her an hour since the pattern was so simple. Since then I haven't been able to convince her to get sewing again, but I've gone to tailors to get them made since I can never find anything similar in stores and I just love them. This is one of the latest ones:

http://flickr.com/photos/yublocka/3277461015/

I got pockets made on this one. But still, simple and cheap! (US $10 in Vietnam)

All of those won't work for reasons other than the price Tanya. The first one could possibly work but the tie thing leaves me cold. It will probably hit too low on me, like always.

Second one is gorgeous but probably won't fit my chest. It's my favorite out of the bunch though.

Third one could possibly work, but I still wonder about fitting my chest. As I complained about in my other topic, all I see are empire waists and more empire waists. They are hit or miss for me. If they do manage to fit, it usually means that the seam is pulled down so far that 3/4 of my chest is popping out. At least this can be cured with a camisole though, but these dresses are all so pretty that I feel like wearing a camisole kind of ruins them. It's also not so convenient in the heat. I know this sounds hypocritical since the one Laura posted (and one that I own) has a raised waistline, but somehow this one looks like it doesn't have as much space. Maybe the wide waistband is throwing me off. I guess it's one of those things I would have to try. These two dresses did not work on me unless I went up to a medium, and then they didn't fit anywhere else:

http://www.urbanoutfitters.com.....NS_APPAREL

http://www.urbanoutfitters.com.....NS_APPAREL

Fourth could work, but again sure about the ties. I also feel more comfortable in faux wraps.

Fifth would not work at all. Empire waist, gathers under the bust, and all that ruching around the chest area are all wrong for me.

Sixth has the same issue with the tie belt as the others.

I know I sound horribly picky but it's not my fault! I guess what I'm looking for is simplicity. I just want a boring, plain dress. No ties, no gathers, no raised waistlines, no tabs. I can always make it more interesting with accessories, but any time a dress has details to add interest, those details are almost always unflattering or ill-fitting on me. Virtually every dress I have seen (and you have proven this even more Tanya) has either a waist belt or an empire waist. It's sooo frustrating. The perfect dress would keep all the details in the sleeves. I like wearing things with interesting sleeves because I have the arms and shoulders to pull it off.

If this was longer, didn't have the chest pocket, and not tshirt material, I would probably go for it:

http://www.urbanoutfitters.com.....prepushId=

That's the level of boringness I'm after. I know it's not the YLF way, but to be honest, I kind of lose interest in style and fashion in the summer because I generally do not like summer clothing and I definitely do not like being hot. I just want dressing to be easy without looking like a slob. Other than that, my standards are pretty low. Winter brings out the happy dresser in me.

Oh, I am also trying to keep the price under $60 a dress, so even with discounts, I don't think I could bring the price down far enough. BCBG does not seem to be in my future.

I actually have a dress with a similar shape but it's not something I wear a lot. It's very flattering but it just isn't casual enough. I'm not holding my breath for this one. 40% off wouldn't be enough, but I'll keep my eye on it.

I do have a weak spot for BCBG dresses, Laura. I try not to look at them because they are always too expensive It's definitely pretty and suits my requirements. Let the stalking begin! Thanks for the tip.

Thinking about your dresses thread, I wondered if this one would fit the bill. Having met you in person, I think it might be really cute on you, plus it seems to suits your style and coloring. It would look great with a navy cardi for work, too. It's not on sale (yet) but surely will be in the coming weeks. (In real life, I don't think it's quite as short as it appears on this model):
