Sorry I missed this thread but am glad I read it this morning . I SO agree with you, and with Suz, in that it's easy in theory to try to style a piece another way in the hopes that you can gain some wear out of it.....but reality says that you likely would have figured it out already if it were that important to you. I'm so unsentimental it hurts (self-protection I think) and can get a little trigger-happy with editing, so it's valuable to read the thoughts of others - yours in particular. Thanks

RobinF Yup.

Jenni NZ I too keep a few things for longer than maybe I should because I'm determined to give a good try on figuring out how to wear them. I have a plaid cardigan/jacket that I'm just going to WEAR a few more times before I do anything else, even if I am on the fence about styling it. Sometimes you just have to give things a try! YLF certainly does help with this, one of my favorite things about this community is all the great ideas that are offered.

I find it hardest to get rid of things I love so much that haven't worked out. I want them to work out so I keep them in case I change my behaviour? It is a little bit easier to get rid of things that I did love but which have fallen out of favour with me, YLF has helped me understand that those are "done" for me.

I am a visually creative person and like to explore options in outfits, interior design, gardening etc, but I had to teach myself how to listen to what I really like on top of all the ideas.

Thanks everyone for the kind replies!

RobinF and Elizabeth P, yes the lighter tweed jacket does go nicely with jeans, but the sleeves and body are a little to tight, the edges catch on things, and I'm just tired of it.

Suz, you are spot on about things we have in common about how we approach our wardrobes! Yes some things COULD be styled a certain way and that's the right thought process for thinking about new items or whether to keep an older one. But when your emotions just say "nah" you need to hear that voice too. Sounds easy but NOT always.

Good job purging and knowing why/learning from it.

Clothing I tend to know when to let go of, which might be later than others would. Items I didn’t wear much often become workhorses later. I once bought a bracelet that I was drawn to, even though logically it was mostly outside of my style. I hardly wore it. A few years later I bought some items for which the bracelet is perfect. And after grabbing it once during the September challenge, I wore an old almost unworn topper often, and look forward to wearing it more.
I think I am willing to keep mostly unworn items longer than most because I am both picky and hard to fit, at least fit the way I like. So if I like something enough to buy and keep I will almost always wear it. A few items have become wear around the house items if I like them but don’t find them JFE for wearing in public.

Sometimes I think we're just constitutionally wired either to "hang on" or "let go" of our things, because what's easy and obvious for one is hard and confusing for another. Of course we all fall on a continuum here, from the person so edit-happy that she essentially buys an entire new wardrobe each season, to the person whose large closets bulge with items bought over 15 or 20 years and who continues to buy each season.

Robin, Elizabeth, I can't answer for Chris but I suspect she and I fall near each other on this continuum. We're both practical (so things that don't work really irritate us! ) and we're not terribly sentimental about most clothing items. At the same time, we were also raised to be frugal and not to "treat" ourselves too much so it can be challenging for us to treat ourselves to expensive high quality things, and if those items don't work out, we feel some guilt about that and may have trouble moving them out of the closet.

You're both right that the tweeds could look great with jeans. But Chris doesn't want to wear them and isn't wearing them and is sick of looking at them in her closet. So they'll look good on someone else with jeans!

Speaking from the perspective of someone who finds editing easier than hoarding -- the fact that you theoretically could style an item successfully is not a reason to keep it if you don't and won't style it that way. I mean -- what's the point? But I imagine it feels much different to those who struggle with edits? I'm really curious to hear how it feels.

Chris really expresses my own attitude perfectly with this comment: "One of the things I've realized about why it's important to let stuff go is that while you still have them you are spending lots of time in tiny little chunks looking at and thinking about them. If that looking and thinking is of sentimental value (or other value) that's fine, but when it's just "old clothes you never wear" it's a WASTE of time."

Sound editing - I love what Janet says about not being perfect for you - because that's what matters, doesn't it, and not only that, if we pass them along rather than hold on to them way too long, it maximizes that change that someone else will find it perfect for them!

Janet here is another set of reasons for passing things on. I've finished my fall edit for several categories and still have a few more to go.

The plaid coat is so cute but I never want to wear it - the faux fur hood style is one I don't want to wear until real winter but the coat is not warm enough for my winters IRL, and the black sleeves are the worst lint collectors I've ever owned.

I haven't worn the tan lined trench in about 5 years and it's only mediocre quality so buh-buy.

The cashmere sweaters (plus two more not shown here) are Charter Club from Macy's and they became a pilly shapeless mess after less than one year, yet I wore them for another season. When I got them out last week I was SO turned off. Not buying cashmere from that brand ever again. I might donate them to my cat beds, my kitties would probably LOVE them.

I like the color and print of the rust top but never really liked the tshirt like fabric or gathered sleeve cuffs so kept considering it but not wearing it.

The jeans are stretched and worn and being demoted to at-home only.

The black long sl T is cotton that has totally pilled so time to go. Easy enough to replace.

I'm tired of the "July 4th" motif tshirt after several years, will get something new for next year.

The denim jacket is going because I replaced it with one I like better and having a duplicate does nothing for me.

I liked the two knit/tweed jackets as part of my office/corporate style but find I just don't want to wear them any more and I'm tired of looking at them so off they go.

One of the things I've realized about why it's important to let stuff go is that while you still have them you are spending lots of time in tiny little chunks looking at and thinking about them. If that looking and thinking is of sentimental value (or other value) that's fine, but when it's just "old clothes you never wear" it's a WASTE of time.
