Hmm, I have one long cardigan (cardigans are generally not my jam, so it's a wear-around-the-house piece) and I have never thought of wearing it over a dress like this. I don't think mine is the right kind to wear this way, but I'd be curious to see how that works for you.

Perhaps my version of that would be my big faux-shearling black moto vest.

I second Firecracker and Taylor ... my first thought was to add a long cardigan or duster, and flat boots. You could even button the cardigan and add an obi belt. Lots of possibilities!

Thank you all for your input. The bombshell factor is indeed high with this dress; that was true even when I was well under a hundred pounds.

I will give some thought to whether with YLF's help, I can find a way to wear this piece or whether it should find a new home.

I would be wary of cutting that kind of meshy material. I would think more about dressing it down with sneakers or other flats and a jeans jacket. I bet it would look gorgeous on you like that.

I’m thinking a jacket, gilet or even denim jacket over the top might help you to feel a little less formal and wear it a bit more often. I mean... it will still be quite dressy even as a tunic because of the fine fabric and tight fit....
Just my two cents.....
Some of my fitted sheath dresses I strictly only wear with a jacket or little cardi, otherwise I feel too self conscious.

I wouldn't cut it off to tunic length, personally. Nor to shirt length (although I have been known to cut off too-tight-in-the-hip dresses to be tops). I think the all-over print/design deserves to be preserved. I don't wear mine often -- in fact, I think I've worn it a total of three times so far? -- but the happiness factor is high when I do, so I keep it. Not everything needs to be a workhorse, but I DO need to feel comfortable in it, and this dress does push the bounds of my comfort zone, especially when my weight is up. So I understand.

If you did what Vix suggested, you would have the bottom of the dress to make into a skirt too (like a tube skirt). It is long enough that the skirt probably wouldn't be too short.

But I think it is stunning as is and would be hesitant to change it.

I just thought of something, but don't know if it could be done elegantly enough to look good. Remember how, the last time bell-bottoms were popular, people used to make them themselves? They'd open up the seam along the sides of the calves on their jeans and sew in a triangle of fabric. Some were more successful than others. Is there any chance that "racing stripes", maybe green, down the sides of this dress could make it fit you again? Adding them would instantly make it more casual.

Clearly, I am not a seamstress. I hope some will comment on this idea.

It is a lovely dress -I have a dress in a similar shape and I don't wear it often. I have worn it once with a blazer and that worked quite well (and low shoes).

I do think if it is not right as is I would sell it - I can't see it working as a top or tunic if I am honest.

However I suspect it looks great on you - these dresses look good with curves!

Hi April --

I'd take it in to someone good and have a convo. I'm thinking if you made sure to have rouching and a banded element at the bottom -- with the whole thing landing about high hip -- you'd be good.

Yes, it'd still hug your body but I get what you're saying about it being more versatile that way. Pop it over slim pants/ jeans or a solid jersey pencil and it's a lot more casual.

As a seamstress, I would say you could shorten this dress to a t-shirt, but not to tunic length for the reasons Angie gives. As a t-shirt it would still be body-con, so you'd want to think hard about whether you'd wear that style of top, too.

Certainly, you could shorten the dress, if it's not a length you love to wear. And you might get more wear out of it if you are willing to wear a long cardi over it and add some boots for everyday--i.e., don't reserve it for occasions. I did that with a short shimmery body-con dress I made; I enjoyed wearing it with a long cardi, and with leggings and booties.

I bought the dress when I was ill and way below my normal weight. I'm better now, but the dress is *very* body con on me (and I did size up). It's also very long on my short self, and the number of times I could wear a long dress that's also quite slinky is limited.

I can see what you're all saying about it probably not working at a tunic length. I so want to wear it and was hoping there was a way, but it may end up on eBay.

I agree with Kathie. You could try it as a tunic as is turning some hem under to see how it would look. Much depends on how bodycon the dress is on you. It does not look like it could be a successful tunic on the model. Too tight to wear pants under it.

Adding in the find.

How would you style it, at a tunic length? How does that make it more wearable for you? Personally, I think it's an elegant dress, at its current length. But, it does seem more appropriate for more formal occasions, so I can see how shorter would make it more versatile.

Hey Janet -- pretty sure we have the same dress (the one with the magnificent bird and floral embroidery, yes?).

I've been thinking it would get more wear if I had it chopped to a tunic length.

What about this idea is unlikely to work?

Seamstresses, feel free to weigh in as well.
