That is a great article. I of course love Marilyn Monroe but this makes me love her even more.

Honestly, I decided long ago not to get too fussed about photos - right about when my gorgeous friends would complain about how horrible they looked in them when I had no idea what they were talking about. I don't photograph well *shrugs*. Oh well! Guess I'll have to rely on my sparkling wit!

Yes it is. She had the wherewithal to fight back and call people on it. As a result, women have started coming out of the woodwork and sharing their moments instead of being ashamed of them. It is a wonderful thing.

Helen, I love those quotes too. I watched "Some Like It Hot" recently and thought she just looked sexy as all get-out. Scandalous even. Then I read a review on the internet that said something like, oh she looked thinner and more attractive in other movies. Wha?

Isabel, I have been reading about that story over the weekend too. It is a nice change for how a celebrity responds to this kind of criticism. I think she makes a good point.

Scarlet, I just started a thread about how rampant the acceptance of put down women is. Ashley Judd wrote a great piece about the hell she took because her face got puffy after steroids to kill an infection. The article has gone viral with woman telling their own "puffy face " moments.

What a GREAT read, Scarlet! Very entertaining writer - this makes me want to check out his book.

Priceless quote: "This stunning lack of materialism made me love and respect her more. What do you need in life other than a good book, a few capri pants, and a cotton sundress or two?" Ha. Also: "zaftig, almost chubby." Misleading camera indeed.

I'm a little skeptical that Marilyn Monroe only had one piece of valuable jewelry, though - all of her diamonds/rare gems may not have been put on the Christie's auction block. Perhaps they were given to close friends or are in a vault somewhere...

The recent discussions about photo trauma reminded me of this article. It was from one of Angie's link love posts and recommended by MaryK, I think. The article is about a guy preparing Marilyn Monroe's belongings for auction, but the part that stuck in my mind was how everyone these days is striving to be "camera thin" as opposed to just slim/healthy, and this used to be just the problem for stars who are photo-documented, but now everyone is subjected to lots of photo documentation. Obviously it is written with a bit of hyperbole and from a certain cultural point of view, but I thought there was something to this point, and anyway I thought it was an interesting read. In any case it made me feel better about the times when I am surprised and disappointed about how I look in a candid photo.
