The science based degree heavily depended on how well your research project did. That was pretty average in my program (average was 6.3 years), but there are people who take like 9 years, although that is frowned upon. Nowadays, in the US, I think it's generally 5-6 years in most programs. I'm planning to get a joint MA/PhD in Sociology in 5 or 6 years (3 of coursework, and then however long the dissertation takes). Some programs are a couple years shorter, and some are twice as long.
