My PhD program was average 4-7 years for the degree then 1-3 postdoc. The science based degree heavily depended on how well your research project did. If you got side tracked due to poor or unanticipated results, it could really drag out the degree time frame.

The time it takes to do a PhD depends on the field. Many science programs in the US are a combined MS/PhD program.....And computer science may be the longest since they generally don't do post-docs after the PhD.....

My PhD took me 6 years. That was pretty average in my program (average was 6.3 years), but there are people who take like 9 years, although that is frowned upon. Nowadays, in the US, I think it's generally 5-6 years in most programs. Keep in mind though that almost all programs here have a "rotation year" where in the first year, you rotate through different labs for 3 months or so at a time to decide where you want to ultimately end up, so you don't really start your thesis work until about a year in or so.

I know Medusa had posted this, but since I didn't have time to comment before, this is so hilarious! My favorite part is the poster of the professor in the background, just as I was wondering, I wonder what the PI thinks about all this. My Chinese colleague said the message on the tubes is something like "it doesn't work--I cheated you"

The number of years really depends on the discipline and the university. I'm planning to get a joint MA/PhD in Sociology in 5 or 6 years (3 of coursework, and then however long the dissertation takes). Some programs are a couple years shorter, and some are twice as long. I have some professors who got their PhD in 3 years, and some professors who got theirs in 12 or 13 years!

Funny, funny, funny!
LOL. That is why I did a degree and didn't do my masters! I wanted to work- LOL! 5 years- really. Is that the normal length of time in the US?

OOOOPS, sorry for the redundancy !! This is a lab out of Baylor that did it for their science retreat. I almost peed my pants !!! What is so intriguing to me is how many people are relating to this and it is so popular. ( I love how she refers to the mouse as "Psycho" ).

I also can't imagine who ok'd all the lab purchases for the outfits -but I am sure glad that they did !

Thanks, Isabel. Medusa posted that last week sometime, and my husband and I (both biology profs) were rolling on the floor. TOO TOO MUCH!

If you look closely, "lady Gaga's " outfits are completely made up of lab products ( orange bio hazardous
bags, pipets, bench diapers.....etc. )
