Chunky flat shoes with pointed toe are definitely still in, if you look at the catwalk shows, and on the streets in Britain at least.

I would definitely keep the D'Orsays. Those really are like fairy dust and could be a super useful addition. A nice update.

I would probably return the others unless you truly have that elusive "it's perfect!" feeling about one or the other of them. If they would replace something currently in the closet and make you much happier, well, then -- maybe it would be a good idea to keep.

On fashion blogs that I've read, the advice regarding sale goggles is to buy the item only if it's perfect and you absolutely love it. If there's something that you don't like about it, you're supposed to let it pass. It sounds like the d'Orsays are really pushing your happy buttons, so good to keep. But it sounds like you have doubts about the others. And there's going to be quite a lot of time left before fall. Do you think that in the interim, you will see other shoes that would push more of your happy buttons? I think sometimes that if we have to think too hard about a purchase, maybe that means it's not one that's really going to make us happy in the long run.

Thanks,Angie! I have been wearing out my welcome at Nordie's and Zappos trying to find the elusive summer shoes and probably got a bit discouraged. So that is when it is easy to fall into the trap of staying in the familiar territory.

suzanne, that is such a great analysis!
The D'Orsays did seem like fairy dust, so they're staying. I had not tried to order online because Iscked the energy to try to figure out fits. So I just tried on some here and there in person. I can " wear now" for fun and see how they do.
I am not a pointy- toe person by nature and have trouble getting them to fit right, but the Western booties intrigued me as a way to combine. I actually would like to wear with skirts and not just pants but have to decide about the trim.
You nailed it on the oxfords except I'm not really over them, I'm just aware that maybe I should or will be by next year- or at least this type. So part of me says, be happy you had a good run this year and stretch the wearing of the ones I've got-- a bit of time left for some spring BF jeans looks and maybe some other sock-less pants.
I have been doing much better about buying shortly before or in - season, but sometimes I have that storing- up gene working to " be prepared"!

For the most part I don't worry about footwear looking dated as long as I love it. I try to keep the rest of my style updated so hopefully that makes up for it... I think these are all fun!

I looked at your profile and you've kept where you live and your approx age a bit of a secret, so I'll answer thru my lens and see if that helps you at all. I live in the southwest (Arizona) so your shooties would be on trend now and then classic enough to be worn for many years. Plus I just have a general fondness for pointed shoes, for reasons I cannot figure out. I just like them. Maybe you do, too? The D'Orsays are early in their cycle, I think, plus have a really nice animal print which will keep them classic for an extra long time. If you are lucky enough to find a pair that fits, are comfortable and stay on...wow...scoop them up. That might be like fairy dust. So, the chunky oxford is harder for me to justify. I used to love these but have grown less fond of them. I think these are much harder to wear, say, 4 years out just because they are so very style-specific. I noticed as I got older I wanted somewhat more refined shoe styles. So my heavier shoes became less versatile for me. That leaves comfort as a factor. Always tends to be the very last issue, doesn't it? Only you can decide that issue. Uncomfortable beautiful shoes become shelf decorations. Hope that helps a little.

Here is a question on how to tell when you are over-duplicating or going too deep into one style vs. when that is actually a style statement in itself.

I came across a couple of pairs of shoes/shooties from Circus by Sam Edelman. I like the stability of the chunky rubber heels and the fit is good with minimal gap compared to some other styles.

1--patent chunky oxford (black is what I brought home in my size, but might yet be able to track down the dark blue, which is "softer" looking and different, for me).
2--pointy shootie--fits solidly. Interestingly to me, the toe on these reads more modern. though the heel is chunky. Not sure about the silver studs because they're really eye-catching and might be too much for my style. Pewter or black would be better. May be too Western though the fit is a draw.

Dilemma--both of these are comfortable and something I would have been glad to have this past year with dark tights and skirts or with some pants and jeans, and from a comfort standpoint, will still need that level of comfort this fall.. Even though footwear trend is currently more refined, I can't utilize a lot of those styles and still have a need for more comfortable shoes for a lot of work days. For adding a bit of heel, the chunky rubber type is the most do-able.
But, it's now spring 2014, and these are hmm, 2012 issue? and would be more for fall --so would only get a bit of wear-now before warm weather.

How do you stay stocked up on items that really work for your real life and balance not worrying about lagging behind the trend curve here and there, vs. knowing whether you've got goggles on and need to resist getting stuck? It takes a lot of energy to find a "most-refined " comfortable shoe vs step out and BE chunky.

Does the fact that these are not "classic" influence your thinking--i.e., would another pair of good ballet flats be sensible, but not a chunky heeled oxford?

3--Also shown for contrast in style direction is my first D'Orsay flat to try--a Betsey Johnson that fit remarkably well and appears to "stay on". Also a sale item, but that is a goal for this type of shoe, which can't be an everyday shoe for me--is for fun on select occasions. And I also wonder when it will be peaking, fashion-wise!

I could keep them unworn and return for store credit in the fall if they seem so over. Or do some more stylings to see if the home mirror test cools off the love. Or return now, stay focused on summer, and anticipate the fall footwear winds to blow something better my way.
