By definition, I think old lady shoes can't have heels, lol. I was going to say they also have to come from one of my fave catalogs - Old Pueblo Traders or Dr Leonard's - but they don't seem to be carrying proper old lady shoes anymore Old lady shoes have to be tan and lace. You wear them with tan poly pants and a white windbreaker with tan piping. It really helps to have hair dyed yellowing. Not blond. Otherwise, your shoes start to look young and hip... I loved to do this look when I was 13.

I agree with Suz that I would see these shoes more as conservative rather than up-to-date modern. I think that the outfits they would be worn with would do a lot to either take them into stylish territory or frumpy territory.

I'm visiting my mother at a retirement home. None of the women here wear shoes like these. They're very busy pursuing their interests. Their shoes are mostly for active people.

I do not have any shoes like the ones I posted here. Just returned 3 pair similar style to the Club Monico-all slipped on my heels even with the heel cups. So am broadening my search-so now looking for the Steve Madden below but not grey or black (these are in finds). then I found the Reiker (also I put in finds) and am really beginning to like them. The Reiker are unlike anything I have , or have even liked before, and not sure why I m liking them, but am wondering about styling them.

Gaylene -- are Fluevog boots ever "old lady footwear"? I think not. Some of them are unwearable clown shoes, I grant you, but conservative they generally not. :-)

Always Trying, of the shoes you posted, I think all of them could be classified as "conservative", but now I'm scared to say anything at all about old ladies. ;-)

Is current vs. dated a better measure? I'm not sure. But, nonetheless, I think the current version of low, blocky heel is more straight rather than angled in, in other words like the one Suz posted. But shoes really do depend on the wearer and the outfit. And no shoe looks good if it is uncomfortable.

I agree that labels such as frumpy or "old lady" aren't helpful.

Are these shoes you are considering buying or that you already own? if so, i think the items you are wearing with them, and your overall look are what matters most.

Maybe it's time to judge a shoe on its styling potential instead of trying to classify it as frumpy/non-frumpy? Just because I'm tired of a trend doesn't make it dated for another person. And, along the same line, just because I have negative associations with a style doesn't make it unstylish.

And, while I'm on my rant, can we quit with the "old lady" label? I'm an old lady of 67 and I'm not crazy about having all my footwear lumped into a category. "Conservative" is fine, and I'll even grant you "comfort" as a category, but my Fluevog boots start stomping when they're called "old lady".

I see these as conservative and comfy more than fashionable but that doesn't mean they are necessarily frumpy. #3 looks a lot like the Munro sandal that many on the forum have loved. I think on the right foot, that one and #2 could look just fine -- it would all be in the styling.

I think these styles are fine. #2 and #4 have some potential towards frumpiness but even they don't immediately scream old lady to me.

Something about nude shoes with a black sole rubs me the wrong way, but I'm not sure it has anything to do with the frump factor, just makes them hard to coordinate. :)

I am the last person who should try to answer your questions, as I am totally heel-illiterate this point and have always loved chunky styles unrepentantly.

I use to have a fairly clear cut idea of what I called "old lady" shoes. These mostly were in the comfort category on most on line sites. Nordies rack has eliminated the comfort category, but nordies regular site has not. On DSW many of the same shoes are in the "on trend" category and the comfort category. Some brands still seem to be more of the old lady type, but the lines of distinction between what are old lady (or maybe frumpy) are getting muddled.

Of the photos below, are any looking like old lady to you? Only types of shoes that still look old lady to me are low wedge slide sandals as in my area they seem to be worn exclusively by older women. A very large percentage of younger women wear flip flop or other toe post flat sandals in warmer weather.

Some of the heel shapes and heights of the photos below are found under block heels. I had been thinking block heels were more blockie looking, not tapered.
