Greyscale, yes, the same and yes better if homemade. Really easy too. If you have a store nearby that sells flour and grain in the bulk department, you don't have to commit to a lot of ingredients to try it. I make it in wide mouth 1 pt jars, much easier to come by for me than an actual coffee can. I use the recipe out of Joy of Cooking, but this one looks about the same https://newengland.com/today/f.....own-bread/

More: strawberry shortcake, lemon curd, zucchini parmesan (all that frying mess).

I make my mother's shortbread recipe once a year, for my dance group's holiday party.

Rambling Ann, you mentioned that baked beans and steamed bread are one of your once-a-year foods -- is that the same idea as the Boston brown bread that's available commercially in a can? I just had a craving for it a few weeks ago, decades since I'd last thought of it, and posted on facebook - and my parents sent me a can for my birthday! But I'm told there are homemade versions that are better. I know it's steamed whether it's storebought or homemade but I've never tried making it.

I use the Italian Cream Cake recipe from Cooking Light...actually not too unhealthy as desserts go but is a winner that does not taste healthy.
I thought of another...gingerbread men cookies and bourbon balls once a year.

Sal, that’s how latkes are for me. We have no cultural/religious connection to them. I just like them. That is, I like eating them. I do not enjoy cleaning up after making them. After I make them, it takes about a year for those memories to fade and for me to decide I want some more.

There are few other things I probably only make once a year but not deliberately ( Lemon meringue pie being one - I love it but just don't get around to making it often).

I love cranberries. I wish they were available all year, but then again, I like cycles and seasons, so waiting for cranberries is part of that.

I only bake bizcochitos (a cookie made with anise) at Christmas time. There's no reason I couldn't make them at other times of the year and I probably should since they're my kids' favorite cookie. I associate posole with winter, not just Xmas, so I'll usually make it several times during the winter months. I only make pumpkin pie and cranberries at Thanksgiving. We do a family Christmas brunch with several dishes that are only served that one time - scotch eggs and cherry rose rolls.

Just a suggestion, before embarking into complicated dishes, ask your neighbours what they like and do not like ... Family and friends still laugh thinking of the time I was invited to dinner by a dear lady I know. She promised me a "specialty" of hers. When I arrived I found out that it was pumpkin dumplings. Well, I eat everything, the only thing that I dislike is pumpkin. Of course I ate them and pretended that I liked them a lot ...

I want to invite the neighbors over sometime soon. I was thinking I might make my famous brie-mushroom-port soup (really from a Williams-Sonoma cookbook). It's so rich, I only dare make it once a year. Same with baked beans and steamed bread, posole, my cranberry tart, and so on. These aren't holiday foods, they just have a short season in my mental rotation when I think of them even though I could make them almost any time. What are you cooking now?
