Thanks Nikki - that's the one. We grew up during the Beatles era and sister is still a massive fan.

Sloper, we watched Peter Jackson’s docuseries “The Beatles: Get Back” on Disney+ . Only part 1 was available on Thanksgiving . Planning on viewing the other two parts at the Christmas get-together. It’s very well done

Finally have pics of choc chip cookies and cinnamon twist challah.

StagFash - well, the technique certainly worked well with Chai! Commenters on the NYT story tried many tea flavors. I guess the melted butter also adds the chewy factor.

Nikki - did you watch the Let It Be Beatles doc? My sister wants to watch that too.

Yummy baked goods! Are Empire cakes similar to biscuits? I ordered a cheesecake for Thanksgiving and it was a big hit. Might repeat for Christmas. My youngest son is working on that day so we may celebrate Christmas Eve day. I haven’t baked since moving to apartment. Hoping I will have interest in baking in the future. Here are pics of cheesecake and DS#2 who hosted Thanksgiving. We watched a Beatles special

Christmas cookie baking got underway chez Stag last night; rolls of dough for oatmeal trilbies is chilling now. I’ve been holding off because I want them to still be good when we visit friends and family at the end of the month/year.

But I used the apples from that tree to make the best strudel I’ve ever made (brushed the phyllo leaves with juice from the apples). Also made spanikopita and baklava with that box of dough, all on the same day.

Sloper, clever of the NYT writer to use the technique for thc edibles to infuse sweets with other flavors. (Yes, I’m aware that it is also used for my other things, but using it in cookies instantly brought brownies to mind).

Beautiful baking!

I'm thinking about cookies too.

I tried a new (to me) recipe a recently: Chewy Earl Grey Sugar Cookies. However, as I am not a fan of Earl Grey, I substituted Chai tea (Stash brand). The ground tea leaves are steeped in melted butter. The dough is shaped into balls and rolled in sugar. They flatten out while baking - both crispy and chewy.

https://cooking.nytimes.com/re.....ar-cookies

Also made a couple of challah loaves yesterday, with cinnamon swirls.

My MIL asked for more of the chocolate chip cookies I had made for her birthday several weeks ago.

And I've got a turkey breast and a beef tenderloin stashed in the freezer.

So beautiful! We will be away for Christmas, visiting my elderly mother, but will have a couple of guests for several weeks around Christmas and New Years. I still have a pumpkin pie in the freezer from Thanksgiving, but haven’t given menus a lot of thought. Our company, our son and his girlfriend, aren’t at all particular. I’m not sure how much cooking they do. They seem to appreciate everything.

New Years Day is our anniversary (41 years). So New Years Eve is always special for us. I’m not sure what we’ll have. If we can get it, I’d like to get Dungeness crab.

The only food photos I’ve got from the past month or so are about baking! Lots of white flour, butter, and sugar!

Effective December 1, the weekly batch of cookies gets elevated from oatmeal, chocolate chip, or peanut butter cookies to Holiday Spice Cookies, Empire Cakes, Millionaire’s Short Bread, PB balls, and traditional Sugar Cookies. I’m going to try my hand at a new recipe: Black Cocoa Shortbread - using black cocoa powder. The cocoa is processed differently - something called ‘heavy Dutch processing’ which removes most of the acidity. It’s allegedly the kind of cocoa used to make Oreos!

Since we do eat meat, veg, and fruit, I’m working out my holiday menus. In addition to Christmas Eve (usually seafood), Christmas (usually ham), and New Years (usually something exotic), there is DS#2’s birthday (usually a prime rib or steaks on the BBQ.)

One thing I’m going to make is my favourite cranberry relish! Super easy, and a big dose of vit C. Beautiful with roast pork or turkey.

1 pckg fresh cranberries
1 large unpeeled orange (cut into eighths and seeded)
3/4-1 cup sugar

Place the cranberries and the orange segments in the food processor and wazz it up until diced fine. Transfer to a glass bowl and stir in sugar to desired sweetness. Store in fridge (at least 6 hours for flavours to blend and sugar to dissolve). Serve cold.

#1 Cream puffs (filling is fresh raspberries and whipped cream) - made by DS#1 as part of a science experiment for an online Chemistry class
#2 layer cake (lemon)
#3 lemon meringue pie
#4 Empire cakes

Please share stories and photos of your recent culinary adventures, as well as plans/menus for the coming holiday celebrations!
